LONDON ? The mastermind behind Britain's "Great Train Robbery," a 1963 heist that turned its perpetrators into celebrities, has died at age 81, local media reported Thursday.

Bruce Reynolds died in his sleep at his home in London after a period of ill health, reports from news media including the BBC said, citing comments from Reynolds' son, Nick.

A photo issued by Scotland Yard on Aug. 2, 1963, shows Bruce Reynolds, who has died at home in London.

His death came just months before the 50th anniversary of the Great Train Robbery, which was at the time Britain's largest robbery.

In August 1963, Reynolds, along with an 11-member gang, tampered with railway track signals and stopped a Royal Mail night train travelling from Glasgow to London carrying letters, parcels and large amounts of cash.

Reynolds and his men stormed the train and made off with 2.6 million pounds, equivalent to about 40 million pounds or $61 million in today's money.

Train driver Jack Mills was struck over the head during the robbery. He died seven years later, and many people believed the injuries he sustained during the heist contributed to his death.

Most of the gang members were caught and given prison sentences totaling more than 300 years, but Reynolds evaded capture, fleeing Britain with his wife and son. He spent five years as a fugitive in places as far afield as Canada and Mexico.

On his return to Britain, Reynolds was caught by police and sentenced to 25 years in prison, of which he served just 10.

Reynolds later found fame as an author after penning his memoirs, titled "Autobiography of a Thief."?

His accomplice Ronnie Biggs achieved similar notoriety after he escaped from the prison where he was serving a 30-year jail sentence for his part in the robbery.

Biggs spent 36 years on the run, leading a playboy lifestyle in South America, before finally surrendering to British police in 2001. Biggs was freed in 2009 on health grounds.

Mutation altering stability of surface molecule in acid enables H5N1 infection of mammals

Feb. 28, 2013 ? A single mutation in the H5N1 avian influenza virus that affects the pH at which the hemagglutinin surface protein is activated simultaneously reduces its capacity to infect ducks and enhances its capacity to grow in mice according to research published ahead of print today in the Journal of Virology.

"Knowing the factors and markers that govern the efficient growth of a virus in one host species, tissue, or cell culture versus another is of fundamental importance in viral infectious disease," says Charles J. Russell of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN, an author on the study. "It is essential for us to identify influenza viruses that have increased potential to jump species, to help us make decisions to cull animals, or quarantine humans." The same knowledge "will help us identify targets to make new drugs that stop the virus? [and] engineer vaccines."

Various influenza viruses are spreading around the globe among wild birds, but fortunately, few gain the ability to jump to humans. However, those that do, and are able to then spread efficiently from person to person, cause global epidemics, such as the infamous pandemic of 1918, which infected one fifth and killed an estimated 2.7 percent of the world's population. Occasionally, one of these viruses is exceptionally lethal. For example, H5N1 has killed more than half of the humans it has infected. The specter of such a virus becoming easily transmissible among humans truly frightens public health officials. But understanding the mechanisms of transmission could help microbiologists find ways to mitigate major epidemics.

When influenza viruses infect birds, the hemagglutinin surface protein of the virus is activated by acid in the entry pathway inside the host cell, enabling it to invade that cell. In earlier work, Russell and collaborators showed that a mutant version of the influenza H5N1 virus called K58I that resists acid activation, loses its capacity to infect ducks. Noting that the upper airways of mammals are more acidic than infected tissues of birds, they hypothesized, correctly, that a mutation rendering the hemagglutinin protein resistant to acid might render the virus more infective in mammals.

In this study the investigators found that K58I grows 100-fold better than the wild-type in the nasal cavities of mice, and is 50 percent more lethal. Conversely, the mutant K58I virus failed completely to kill ducks the investigators infected, while the wild-type killed 66 percent of ducks, says Russell. "A single mutation that eliminates H5N1 growth in ducks simultaneously enhances the capacity of H5N1 to grow in mice. We conclude that enhanced resistance to acid inactivation helps adapt H5N1 influenza virus from an avian to a mammalian host."

"These data contribute new information about viral determinants of influenza virus virulence and provide additional evidence to support the idea that H5N1 influenza virus pathogenesis in birds and mammals is linked to the pH of [hemagglutinin] activation in an opposing fashion," Terence S. Dermody of Vanderbilt University et al. write in an editorial in the journal accompanying the paper. "A higher pH optimum of [hemagglutinin] activation favors virulence in birds, whereas a lower pH optimum? favors virulence in mammals."

Based on this and another study, "?surveillance should include phenotypic assessment of the [hemagglutinin] activation pH in addition to sequence analysis," Dermody writes.

The journal carefully considered whether to publish the paper, because it raised issues of "dual use research of concern" (DURC), writes Dermody. DURC is defined as "Life sciences research that, based on current understanding, can be reasonably anticipated to provide knowledge, information, products, or technologies that could be directly misapplied to pose a significant threat with broad potential consequences to public health and safety, agricultural crops and other plants, animals, the environment, materiel, or national security," according to a US government policy document. However, both the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the St. Jude Institutional Biosafety Committee concluded that the study failed to meet the definition of DURC. Clinching the case, "the addition of the key mutation in the Russell paper to other previously reported mutations would not result in an even more virulent H5N1 influenza virus," says Dermody.

Stocks surge, Dow nears record high

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Dow came within 60 points of its all-time high Wednesday after rising sharply for a second straight day.

The market surged following more evidence that the Fed will keep interest rates low, housing will keep recovering and shoppers aren't pulling back on spending, though they're paying more in Social Security taxes this year.

The gains were broad: Twenty-nine of 30 stocks in the Dow Jones industrial average rose. All 10 industries in the Standard and Poor's 500 index climbed.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 175.24 points, or 1.2 percent, to 14,075.37. The index is now 89 points from its record close of 14,164.53 reached in October 2007. The index rose steadily from the opening bell, then peaked near the record at 3:26 p.m. Eastern Time, before easing slightly in the last half hour of trade.

The Dow has surged 290 points in the past two days, erasing its drop of 216 points Monday when inconclusive results from an election in Italy renewed worries that Europe's fiscal crisis could flare up again.

"The market psychology has clearly shifted. It's no longer sell the rally, it's buy the dips," said Dan Veru, chief investment officer of Palisade Capital Management. "The economic data continues to be strong."

The Standard and Poor's 500 index gained 19.05 points, or 1.3 percent, to 1,515.99. The Nasdaq composite rose 32.61 points, or 1.3 percent, to 3,162.26. The index is 6.5 percent higher for the year, and is about 3.1 percent short of its record close of 1,565.

Investors were also encouraged Wednesday that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke stood behind the central bank's low-interest-rate policies as he faced the House Financial Services Committee. His comments dissipated worries about the bank's resolve to keep up the program. Those worries sprang up last week when minutes from the bank's last policy meeting revealed disagreement among Fed officials.

Also, the number of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes rose in January from December to the highest level in almost three years. The report continued a string of positive housing news. Sales of new homes jumped 16 percent last month to the highest level since July 2008, the government reported Tuesday.

Home builder stocks rose for the second day in a row. PulteGroup climbed 25 cents, or 1.3 percent, to $19.30, after rising 5.7 percent the day before.

"Some encouraging news for the bulls has been the housing data that has come out over the past couple of days," said Todd Salamone, director of research at Schaeffer's Investment Research.

The analyst said he remained "extremely bullish," on stocks in the medium and long-term, but cautioned that a pullback may lie ahead in coming days after the year's strong gains.

Stocks have surged since the start of the year. The Dow is up 7.4 percent and the S&P 500 has climbed 6.3 percent.

But rising even more is the Dow Jones transportation average, which is up 13 percent for the year to 5,989.37. Airlines like Delta and Alaska Air are powering the gains.

"If the economy is doing well you've got to be moving stuff around," said Phil Orlando, chief equity strategists at Federated Investors. "You've got to be moving people on airplanes, you've got to be moving cargo with trains or trucks, or UPS."

Discount retailers rose Wednesday. Dollar Tree jumped $4.31, or 11 percent, to $45.39 after reporting a 22 percent profit increase. Dollar General rose $1.61, or 3.6 percent, to $46.56. Family Dollar Stores rose $1.39, or 2.5 percent, to $57.68.

Earnings for S&P 500 companies will climb 7.8 percent in the fourth quarter, the third straight quarter of growth, according to data from S&P Capital IQ.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose two basis points to 1.90 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves;

? Retailer J.C. Penney fell $3.07, or 15 percent, to $18.09 after the market closed following a much a quarterly loss that was much larger than expected.

? Priceline.com rose $17.42, or 2.6 percent, to $695.91 after reporting that its net income jumped in the fourth quarter as bookings grew.

? First Solar plunged $4.32, or 13.8 percent, to $27.04 after the company posted disappointing sales for the fourth quarter and gave a weak early outlook for the year.

? Target fell 93 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $63.12 after the No. 2 discount chain's quarterly income fell 2 percent as it dealt with intense competition during the holiday shopping season.

? DreamWorks Animation fell 30 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $16.31 after posting a loss of $82.7 million. The company booked a write-off on its November release "Rise of the Guardians" and on an upcoming movie that needs to be reworked.

Trayvon Martin?s father: We will ?never move on?

Keith Bedford / Reuters

Tracy Martin (L) and Sybrina Fulton, the parents of Trayvon Martin, participate in a candle light vigil to mark the anniversary of the shooting death of their son in New York, February 26, 2013.

By Erin McClam and Andrew Rafferty, NBC News

The father of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black teenager shot to death in Florida last year, said Tuesday that the family will ?never move on? and will fight to make sure his memory ?won?t be tainted by this whole situation.?

On the anniversary of his son?s killing, Tracy Martin also said that lawmakers across the country must take a hard look at gun laws and who should get gun permits. He cited not just his son?s death but the elementary-school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

?Why would you need a semiautomatic weapon to be hunting? That?s senseless,? Tracy Martin said on MSNBC.

Trayvon Martin in an undated handout photo released by the Martin family.

George Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer, is charged with second-degree murder in Martin?s death. Zimmerman, who is of white and Hispanic descent, has pleaded not guilty and says he shot Martin in self-defense after Martin attacked him.

The case ignited a debate over race and gun rights in the weeks after the shooting. It became a rallying point for activists protesting what they said was the targeting of an unarmed black youth because of his race.

Zimmerman?s trial is scheduled to begin June 10.

Various demonstrations and memorials took place Tuesday night to mark the first anniversary of Martin?s death.

MSNBC's Thomas Roberts talks to Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, parents of Trayvon Martin, and their attorneys Benjamin Crump and Darryl Parks.

Hundreds joined Martin?s parents for a candlelight vigil in New York City as part of what they called a ?Million Hoodie March? ? because Martin was wearing a hoodie the night he was killed.

"We are all Trayvon Martin," demonstrators chanted as they gathered in the city?s famed Union Square.

In the Orlando suburb of Sanford, Fla., where the incident occurred, a moment of silence was held at 7:15 p.m., the time Martin was killed.

The vigil there was organized by Geri Hepburn, a white parent whose son became politically active after the shooting became a focal point of the nation.

"I figure it's a lifelong thing," Hepburn told Reuters.

Tracy Martin said on MSNBC that ?as parents of a slain child, we never move on. And we?ll do our best to keep it in the media and to keep people?s attention.?

He added: ?We don?t expect Trayvon to be the top story every day. He?s definitely the top story in our life. We took a vow to make sure that his honor and his legacy won?t be tainted by this whole situation.?

Martin?s mother, Sybrina Fulton, said that the family is holding up ?fairly well? and relying on one another.

?It?s been a somber year, a sad year, a year I won?t soon forget,? said Tracy Martin.

Editor's note: George Zimmerman has sued NBCUniversal for defamation, and the company has strongly denied his allegations.

The Grio's Joy Reid and Lehigh University's Dr. James Peterson examine how the shooting of Trayvon Martin, one year ago today, not only jumpstarted the national conversation on racial profiling ? but also on the nation's gun laws.

Wolverine, Hercules Share Gay Kiss In Alternate Universe (PHOTO)

Wolverine and Hercules might be superheros with a lot of world-saving on their hands, but that doesn't mean they don't have time for a steamy embrace every now and then.

Wolverine and Hercules share a gay kiss in an issue of Marvel's "X-Treme X-Men," according to comic book news blog Bleeding Cool. The "alternate universe," polyamorous characters from parallel dimensions -- and not to be confused with the much beloved Wolverine or Hercules featured in the other Marvel comics and story lines -- embrace in issue No. 10 while crusading against foes.

SCROLL FOR PHOTO

"We were our worlds' greatest heros," they say. "And the day we slew the worst monster who ever threatened the Dominion of Canada ... We revealed our love."

In September, Bleeding Cool hinted that Hercules is bisexual and had a romantic relationship with James "Logan" Howlett, or Wolverine, in another dimension.

Marvel has a great track record when it comes to LGBT content.

Marvel's Northstar married his beau in June's issue No. 51 of "Astonishing X-Men." Northstar came out as gay back in 1992. He was one of Marvel's first characters to do so, the Associated Press notes.

Since then, multiple other Marvel, DC Comics and Archie Comics characters have had same-sex relationships. Most recently, on Feb. 20, Batwoman proposed to her girlfriend, Cpt. Maggie Sawyer.

The inclusion of LGBT characters has earned various comic series the acclaim of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). Some of these have been nominated for the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, according to Comics Alliance. The GLAAD Media Awards "recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives."

Marvel was nominated for "Astonishing X-Men" by Marjorie Liu.

Although DC Comics was nominated twice this year, the organization has come under fire recently for tapping anti-gay author Orson Scott Card to pen an upcoming issue of "Superman."

Qatar poet remains in prison for 'offensive' verse

DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? A poet jailed for a verse considered offensive to Qatar's ruler harshly denounced the Gulf nation's legal proceedings on Monday after an appeals court reduced his life sentence but still kept a 15-year prison term.

The rant in court ? rare in the tightly controlled Gulf Arab states ? underscored the free speech battles across the region as Western-backed authorities take strict measures against perceived political dissent in the wake of the Arab Spring.

From Kuwait to Oman, dozens of people have been arrested in the past year for social media posts deemed insulting to leaders or calling for political forms. For Qatar, the case also could bring added pressure from rights groups looking into labor conditions and other preparations for football's 2022 World Cup, which will be by far the most prominent international event hosted in the Gulf region.

"Unjust," shouted poet Muhammad ibn al-Dheeb al-Ajami in the heavily guarded courtroom in Qatar's capita, Doha, after his appeal to drop the conviction was denied. The court cut the life sentence handed down in November and imposed a 15-year term instead.

Al-Ajami faced specific charges from a poem posted online in 2010 that discussed the traits needed for a good leader ? which apparently was seen by authorities as a challenge to Qatar's emir and the ruling family.

He was more widely known for an Internet video of him reciting "Tunisian Jasmine," a poem lauding that country's popular uprising, which touched off the Arab Spring rebellions across the Middle East. In the poem, he said, "we are all Tunisia in the face of repressive" authorities and criticized Arab governments that restrict freedoms, calling them "thieves."

Al-Ajami still can appeal the remaining prison term to a higher court.

"This sentence will not stand," said his brother Hasan. "When you strip away everything, this is just a case about power and pressure."

Qatar's attorney general, Ali bin Fetais al-Marri, told Al-Jazeera English that state prosecutors also will seek to restore the life sentence.

"We accept the ruling," al-Marri told the network. "However, we, as public prosecution, will resort to the Supreme Court to challenge the judgment, hoping to restore it as was, a life term. However, in any case, we will honor the (decision) of the court."

Earlier this month, a Kuwait court sentenced three former opposition lawmakers to three years hard labor for insulting the country's ruler during speeches at political rallies. In January, a Kuwait blogger and online journalists received two-year sentences in back-to-back convictions for posts deemed "insulting" to the emir.

In November, the United Arab Emirates set stricter Internet monitoring and enforcement codes. They include giving authorities wider leeway to arrest Web activists for offenses such as mocking the country's leadership or calling for demonstrations.

Yesterday, I received a package from Lemer & Company representing Dovden Investments, Ltd. The package claims that my app infriges their patents.

http://brevets-patents.ic.gc.ca/opic-cipo/cpd/eng/patent/2363556/summary.html

I am reaching out to HN because I know there are many transit apps out there that have the same functionality: letting users know when the next bus will arrive using a third-party API (from NextBus, or GTFS Realtime for example).

So, if anyone has dealt with Dovden or has had a similar experience (or ArrivalStar in the US), please contact me at barum.rho@gmail.com

More details: My apps use the API provided by NextBus who apparently licensed these patents. The patents describe a system that includes a vehicle unit (GPS) and a central server that processes GPS locations, neither of which are part of my app. They offered a "discounted" licensing fee, but my apps have generated income nowhere near the amount.

Please upvote for a better chance of finding other transit app developers.

Catholic activists petition LA cardinal not to join papal conclave

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Roman Catholic activists on Saturday petitioned a U.S. cardinal to recuse himself from taking part in selecting a new pope so as not to insult survivors of sexual abuse by priests committed while he was archbishop of Los Angeles.

The activists delivered a petition with nearly 10,000 signatures to the North Hollywood church where Cardinal Roger Mahony resides.

"It's a total slap in the face to victims to think (Mahony) can cover up 25 years of child sex abuse and then go prancing off to Rome like a prince of the Church," said Joelle Casteix, western regional director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

As archbishop of Los Angeles from 1985 until 2011, Mahony worked to send priests known to be abusers out of state to shield them from law enforcement scrutiny in the 1980s, according to church files unsealed under a U.S. court order last month.

Although his successor, Archbishop Jose Gomez, removed him from all public and administrative duties, Mahony has announced his intention to be among 117 cardinals allowed into the Vatican's Sistine Chapel to vote for the next leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.

Last week, Pope Benedict XVI, 85, announced his resignation effective February 28, making him the first pope in centuries to abdicate rather than die in office.

His eight-year reign will be remembered by many for the child sex abuse scandal in Europe and the United States - most of which took place in the 1980s but which came to light more recently.

In California, at a news conference outside the St. Charles Borromeo Church, where Mahony is in residence, members of the groups held up signs reading, "Respect the victims. Honor the church. Hold leaders accountable."

"This should be a time for new beginnings," said Chris Pumpelly, a spokesman for social justice nonprofit Catholics United, before delivering the petitions to the church. If Mahony were to vote, "it would be a step backward. It would be a validation of the old ways."

It was unclear whether Mahony was at the church at the time, or if he would receive the documents before he left for Rome.

Earlier on Saturday, Mahony was deposed for more than three hours about his handling of sex-abuse cases. It was the first time he was asked about the church files unsealed last month, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Influential Italian magazine Famiglia Cristiana, or "Christian Family," has also questioned whether Mahony should be part of the conclave. Many readers responded online that he should not.

On Friday, Mahony took to Twitter to repeat his intent on voting: "Just a few short hours before my departure for Rome. Will be tweeting often from Rome, except during the actual Conclave itself. Prayers!"

Juliana Stock: Tips When Facing Fear and Stress

For years I've lived by the personal mantra, particularly in times of fear and stress -- crippling or otherwise -- feelings aren't facts. For me, it's a simple, clarifying yet true phrase that has seen me through a number of sticky, stressful, even painful moments. Fear can be one of the most crippling of all the emotions. It can paralyze and hinder progress or, when channeled, it can transform into courage.

Fear and stress also have bad raps. Sometimes it's a necessary evil to get to what we really want or need. In my adult life, I've made some difficult decisions that created stressful situations as byproducts. For example, I chose to end a marriage and become a single mother, I chose to eventually get remarried and introduce a stepfather to my two beautiful children, and I chose to make a career change to pursue something I was more passionate about. All of these things came with their share of sadness, stress, fear and tears, but what was on the the other side was joy, laughter, anticipation and excitement.

Between the "before" and "after" in all those situations, I did not lose my fear -- at least not initially. What I've come to understand is that courage isn't the absence of fear at all. It's taking an action or risk, making a move or decision in spite of it, and here are some of the tools that I found were handy:

1. Know this too shall pass: No situation or feeling is forever, not even fear, you just have to have the patience and persistence to wait it out.

2. Perspective is everything: Even before your circumstances change, your perspective might and that is a beautiful thing.

3. Just take the next right action: When it feels like there are a million things to accomplish and it's insurmountable, it's easy to become paralyzed, and that's often when an "all or nothing" mindset can sneak in and take over (example: well, doing that one thing won't fix the whole problem, so why do anything at all?). The fact is, a journey of 100 miles began with the first step, so when I feel overwhelmed and I start focusing on doing the best thing I can do that's right in front of me, I can stay on task, and pretty soon the little tasks start to add up.

4. Identify quantifiable evidence: Feelings may not be facts, but sometimes in moments of high stress or true despair they can be worse. What I try to do -- in moments that are less fraught -- is collect pieces of quantifiable evidence that combat the fear so I can have them in my back pocket. For example, if I fear I will be alone, I have letters and notes from my husband and children that say how much they love me; if the fear is about not being talented in a chosen field, perhaps keep a scrapbook of professional accomplishments.

5. Resist the urge to isolate: When I'm feeling bad, I always want to hibernate. It makes sense... facing the world is the last thing I want to do when I feel like the word "LOSER" is written across my face. The truth is, isolation feeds desperation and only digs the hole deeper. Support systems are really important when getting through moments of stress as is continuing to feel like a citizen of the world.

(AP Photo/Patrick Gardin, File)

(AP) ? The Justice Department joined a lawsuit Friday against disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong that alleges the former seven-time Tour de France champion concealed his use of performance-enhancing drugs and defrauded his longtime sponsor, the U.S. Postal Service.

The lawsuit alleges that riders on the postal service-sponsored team, including Armstrong, knowingly violated their postal service agreements by regularly using banned substances and methods to enhance their performance.

"Lance Armstrong and his cycling team took more than $30 million from the U.S. Postal Service based on their contractual promise to play fair and abide by the rules ? including the rules against doping," said U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen, whose office is handling the case. "The Postal Service has now seen its sponsorship unfairly associated with what has been described as 'the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen.'"

In recent weeks, settlement discussions had been under way between the Justice Department and Armstrong's lawyers. A person familiar with the negotiations said Friday the two sides are tens of millions of dollars apart on how much Armstrong should pay to settle the case. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak on the record about the private talks.

From 1996 through 2004, the postal service sponsored a professional cycling team run by Tailwind Sports Corp., and Armstrong was the lead rider. From 1999 to 2004, he won six consecutive Tour de France titles. The suit also said Johan Bruyneel, the team's manager, knew that team members were using performance-enhancing substances and facilitated the practice.

The Justice Department notified the federal court that it is joining the lawsuit against Armstrong, Bruyneel and Tailwind and will file its formal complaint within 60 days.

In announcing it was joining the case, the Justice Department emphasized Armstrong's concealment of his activities and said the cover-up went back to at least 1998.

"The U.S. Postal Service Cycling Team was run as a fraudulent enterprise and individuals both inside and outside of sport aided and abetted this scheme and profited greatly," said Travis Tygart, CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. "USADA applauds today's action by the U.S. Department of Justice which holds promise for returning the many millions of federal dollars in ill-gotten gains generated by this fraud."

Last month, USADA lobbied Attorney General Eric Holder for the Justice Department to join the lawsuit against Armstrong. It was USADA's investigative report in October that led to Armstrong being stripped of his medals.

An Armstrong lawyer, Robert Luskin, said negotiations with the government failed because "we disagree about whether the postal service was damaged."

"The postal service's own studies show that the service benefited tremendously from its sponsorship ? benefits totaling more than $100 million," said Luskin.

Luskin said that "Lance and his representatives worked constructively over these last weeks with federal lawyers to resolve this case fairly."

The suit the Justice Department is joining was filed under seal in 2010 by former teammate Floyd Landis, who was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title for doping. Under the False Claims Act, private citizens can act as whistle-blowers and sue to recover money they believe was obtained through fraud against the federal government. These suits remain under seal until the Justice Department decides whether it thinks there is enough merit in the case to take it over. The private whistle-blower receives a percentage of any money ultimately recovered.

In his 2010 complaint, which was made public Friday, Landis gave a detailed account of what he alleged had been widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs by Armstrong and assistance from Bruyneel and others to carry out the drug use.

During the 2002 Tour de France, Landis and Armstrong lay on opposite sides of a bed to receive re-infusions of a half-liter of blood each, Landis' complaint said. During the banned procedure, Bruyneel sat in a chair watching and commented on how well the two were going to do in a time trial the following day, according to Landis.

In Spain, Landis went to Armstrong's apartment, where Landis met Italian physician Michele Ferrari, who drew half a liter of blood and placed it in a refrigerator. Armstrong then asked Landis to stay in the apartment to check the temperature of the blood each day while Armstrong went away for a few weeks to train.

In 2003, the withdrawal of two units of blood had left Landis in need of EPO to stimulate the production of red blood cells. Landis went to Armstrong's apartment, where Armstrong handed him a box of EPO, which Landis then used intravenously for several weeks during training for the Vuelta, a road race in Spain.

In 2004 for the Tour de France , Armstrong, Landis and seven teammates took blood transfusions on the team bus on a ride from the finish of one stage of the race to the hotel. To conduct the transfusions, the bus driver pulled over to the side of a remote mountain road for an hour, feigning engine trouble.

Armstrong was the subject of a two-year federal grand jury investigation that the Justice Department dropped a year ago without an indictment.

Throughout his career, Armstrong always denied drug use, but he confessed to having done so in an interview last month.

In October, USADA released a report that included affidavits from 11 of Armstrong's former teammates. These affidavits detailed how the teammates were supplied with EPO ? a banned hormone that increases oxygen-carrying red blood cells to boost endurance, particularly in thin mountain air ? by Armstrong and saw him inject, and how they were pressured to dope and bullied by Armstrong and Bruyneel. The cycling world's governing body then took away from Armstrong the seven Tour de France titles he won from 1999 to 2005.

Armstrong and USADA officials talked on and off over a couple of months about the terms under which the cyclist might sit down for a long interview to tell all he knows about doping in cycling, but Armstrong finally announced he would not cooperate.

A person familiar with discussions between Armstrong and USADA, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private, said among the topics was how much protection USADA could provide Armstrong in the whistle-blower case and against possible criminal action. The cyclist and his attorneys were not satisfied with USADA's offer, the person said.

Commenting Wednesday on Armstrong's refusal to talk, Tygart said that, "over the last few weeks he has led us to believe that he wanted to come in and assist USADA but was worried of potential criminal and civil liability if he did so."

If the Justice Department ends up taking the Landis whistle-blower case all the way to trial, a key issue is likely to be whether the U.S. Postal Service ? the Armstrong team's sponsor ? suffered financial harm from the drug scandal.

The government must prove not only that the postal service was defrauded, but that it was damaged somehow. (backslash)

Studies done for the postal service conclude the agency reaped at least $139 million in worldwide brand exposure in four years ? $35 million to $40 million for sponsoring the Armstrong team in 2001; $38 million to $42 million in 2002; $31 million in 2003; and $34.6 million in 2004.

The government could counter that all of the recent controversy tarnishes the whole sponsorship and has damaged the postal service.

But the USPS sponsorship ended long ago and relatively few people reading stories about the current controversy are associating Armstrong with the post office. Armstrong's last sponsor for his final two Tours de France was Radio Shack, in 2009 and 2010.

The government has a potentially strong weapon on its side: An argument could be made that until recent months there was an active, ongoing conspiracy to cover up Armstrong's alleged fraud. If the case ever goes to trial, that argument could persuade a judge to allow in a huge amount of evidence on Armstrong's use of performance-enhancing drugs dating back to the 1990s ? evidence that would be barred from the government's court case as too old if there were no extended conspiracy.

Chinese Officials Admit "Cancer Villages" Due To Pollution Exist

According to Chinese business magazine Caijing, Chinese officials with the Ministry of Environment Protection confirmed the existence of cancer villages in a statement announcing plans to alleviate pollution and its harmful side effects.

?The toxic chemicals have caused many environmental emergencies linking to water and air pollutions,? the Ministry announced. ?There are even some serious cases of health and social problems like the emergence of cancer villages in individual regions.?

The Ministry said it planned to ?guard against and control risks presented by chemicals to the environment during the 12th 5-Year period (2011-2015).?

Many believe the nation?s persistent environmental issues are a result of China?s rapid growth, especially with large-scale factory production fueled by coal-fired power plants. The Ministry said that the levels of industrial production that occur in China would be forbidden in many other developed countries, but can still be found in China, adding that the nation has now even become a proposed destination for those looking to continue environmentally-unfriendly production.

Mainland China?s cancer rates have been surging since the 1990?s, becoming the nation?s biggest cause of death. In 2010, an investigative journalist and environmental activist, Deng Fei, posted a widely circulated map of China?s cancer villages. Deng Fei was able to map out over 100 cancer villages, covering 27 provinces. Research by other academics and news organizations suggests that a more realistic estimate would be upwards of 400.

Cancer Village Map (Photo: Google Maps/ Deng Fei) China's cancer villages-- areas with cancer patients significantly above the national average-- mapped out by various researchers and produced by environmentalist Deng Fei in 2009.

For those doubting that pollution was an influence in creating cancer villages, Deng Fei?s map also detailed the proximity in which factories were to residents diagnosed with cancer. The Dongjin village, for example had 100 villagers die of esophageal and lung cancer between 2001-2006, while there was heavy pollution from the nearby Julong chemical factory. ?Villagers brought a lawsuit against the chemical factory, but each person would only receive a 70 yuan ($11) payment,? the report read.

Another report on 21 villages in Xi?An found that half of the collective deaths over a 14-year period (1990-2004) were caused by cancer. ?Cancer developed as a result of industry on the waterfront and uncontrolled discharge of sewage.?

Deng Fei continues to publicize pollution problems across the nation by posting on Weibo, China?s Twitter-like social media platform. ?

Earlier this week, Deng told his Weibo followers to take advantage of being in their hometowns for the Spring Festival holiday and take a picture of their local rivers and lakes. He received an overwhelming amount of photos of polluted water sources, garbage-infested rivers, and reports of chemical dumping from different areas of China.

Air and water pollution has quickly become a hot-button topic as international news media picked up on reports of toxic air levels in Beijing in early January. Readings for toxic particles PM2.5 exceeded the designated scale several days in a row, alarming many of the city?s residents.

Egypt opposition warns elections may fuel tensions

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian opposition leader is warning the president's call for parliamentary elections in April will only inflame the country's political tensions.

Mohamed ElBaradei, who leads the main opposition National Salvation Front, wrote on his Twitter account Friday that President Mohammed Morsi's "decision to go for parliamentary elections amidst severe societal polarization and eroding state authority is a recipe for disaster."

ElBaradei's group has already warned it would boycott the vote unless there are talks with the president aimed at real reconciliation. It has also said it will boycott if election laws written by the Islamist-led interim parliament favor Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood party.

The Brotherhood has consistently won at the ballot box since Egypt's uprising two years ago while the mostly secular and liberal opposition has trailed significantly behind.

Particle physics research sheds new light on possible 'fifth force of nature'

Feb. 21, 2013 ? In a breakthrough for the field of particle physics, Professor of Physics Larry Hunter and colleagues at Amherst College and The University of Texas at Austin have established new limits on what scientists call "long-range spin-spin interactions" between atomic particles. These interactions have been proposed by theoretical physicists but have not yet been seen. Their observation would constitute the discovery of a "fifth force of nature" (in addition to the four known fundamental forces: gravity, weak, strong and electromagnetic) and would suggest the existence of new particles, beyond those presently described by the Standard Model of particle physics.

The new limits were established by considering the interaction between the spins of laboratory fermions (electrons, neutrons and protons) and the spins of the electrons within Earth. To make this study possible, the authors created the first comprehensive map of electron polarization within Earth induced by the planet's geomagnetic field.

Hunter -- along with emeritus Amherst physics professor Joel Gordon; postdoctoral fellow Stephen Peck; student researcher Daniel Ang '15; and Jung-Fu "Afu" Lin, associate professor of geosciences at UT Austin -- co-authored a paper about their work that appears in this week's issue of the journal Science. The highly interdisciplinary research relies on geophysics, atomic physics, particle physics, mineral physics, solid-state physics and nuclear physics to reach its conclusions.

The paper describes how the team combined a model of Earth's interior with a precise map of the planet's geomagnetic field to produce a map of the magnitude and direction of electron spins throughout Earth. Their model was based in part on insights gained from Lin's studies of spin transitions at the high temperatures and pressures of Earth's interior.

Every fundamental particle (every electron, neutron and proton, to be specific), explained Hunter, has the intrinsic atomic property of "spin." Spin can be thought of as a vector -- an arrow that points in a particular direction. Like all matter, Earth and its mantle -- a thick geological layer sandwiched between the thin outer crust and the central core -- are made of atoms. The atoms are themselves made up of electrons, neutrons and protons that have spin. Earth's magnetic field causes some of the electrons in the mantle's minerals to become slightly spin-polarized, meaning the directions in which their spins point are no longer completely random, but have some net orientation.

Earlier experiments, including one in Hunter's laboratory, explored whether their laboratory spins prefer to point in a particular direction. "We know, for example, that a magnetic dipole has a lower energy when it is oriented parallel to the geomagnetic field and it lines up with this particular direction -- that is how a compass works," he explained. "Our experiments removed this magnetic interaction and looked to see if there might be some other interaction that would orient our experimental spins. One interpretation of this 'other' interaction is that it could be a long-range interaction between the spins in our apparatus, and the electron spins within the Earth, that have been aligned by the geomagnetic field. This is the long-range spin-spin interaction we are looking for."

So far, no experiment has been able to detect any such interaction. But in Hunter's paper, the researchers describe how they were able to infer that such so-called spin-spin forces, if they exist, must be incredibly weak -- as much as a million times weaker than the gravitational attraction between the particles. At this level, the experiments can constrain "torsion gravity" -- a proposed theoretical extension of Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. Given the high sensitivity of the technique Hunter and his team used, it may provide a useful path for future experiments that will refine the search for such a fifth force. If a long-range spin-spin force is found, it not only would revolutionize particle physics but might eventually provide geophysicists with a new tool that would allow them to directly study the spin-polarized electrons within Earth.

"If the long-range spin-spin interactions are discovered in future experiments, geoscientists can eventually use such information to reliably understand the geochemistry and geophysics of the planet's interior," said Lin.

Possible future discoveries aside, Hunter said that he was pleased that this particular project enabled him to work with Lin. "When I began investigating spin transitions in the mantle, all of the literature led to him," he explained. "I was thrilled that he was interested in the project and willing to sign on as a collaborator. He has been a good teacher and has had enormous patience with my ignorance about geophysics. It has been a very fruitful collaboration."

Lin had his own take: "The most rewarding and surprising thing about this project was realizing that particle physics could actually be used to study the deep Earth."

Floral signs go electric: Bumblebees find and distinguish electric signals from flowers

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Flowers' methods of communicating are at least as sophisticated as any devised by an advertising agency, according to a new study, published February 21 in Science Express by researchers from the University of Bristol. However, for any advertisement to be successful, it has to reach, and be perceived by, its target audience. The research shows for the first time that pollinators such as bumblebees are able to find and distinguish electric signals given out by flowers.

Flowers often produce bright colours, patterns and enticing fragrances to attract their pollinators. Researchers at Bristol's School of Biological Sciences, led by Professor Daniel Robert, found that flowers also have their equivalent of a neon sign -- patterns of electrical signals that can communicate information to the insect pollinator. These electrical signals can work in concert with the flower's other attractive signals and enhance floral advertising power.

Plants are usually charged negatively and emit weak electric fields. On their side, bees acquire a positive charge as they fly through the air. No spark is produced as a charged bee approaches a charged flower, but a small electric force builds up that can potentially convey information.

By placing electrodes in the stems of petunias, the researchers showed that when a bee lands, the flower's potential changes and remains so for several minutes. Could this be a way by which flowers tell bees another bee has recently been visiting? To their surprise, the researchers discovered that bumblebees can detect and distinguish between different floral electric fields.

Also, the researchers found that when bees were given a learning test, they were faster at learning the difference between two colours when electric signals were also available.

How then do bees detect electric fields? This is not yet known, although the researchers speculate that hairy bumblebees bristle up under the electrostatic force, just like one's hair in front of an old television screen.

The discovery of such electric detection has opened up a whole new understanding of insect perception and flower communication.

Dr Heather Whitney, a co-author of the study said: "This novel communication channel reveals how flowers can potentially inform their pollinators about the honest status of their precious nectar and pollen reserves."

Professor Robert said: "The last thing a flower wants is to attract a bee and then fail to provide nectar: a lesson in honest advertising since bees are good learners and would soon lose interest in such an unrewarding flower.

"The co-evolution between flowers and bees has a long and beneficial history, so perhaps it's not entirely surprising that we are still discovering today how remarkably sophisticated their communication is."

The research was supported by the Leverhulme Trust.

Quebec cinema: Crisis? What crisis?

?

Finissant(e)s, a snapshot of grad night by Rafa?l Ouellet, is among the films premi?ring at the festival.

Photograph by: RVCQ , .

MONTREAL - It?s like throwing a birthday party for yourself. While Quebec cinema is being celebrated around the world, there?s no better place to f?te the quality and diversity of our province?s annual film output than Les Rendez-vous du cin?ma qu?b?cois (RVCQ).

The festival, which kicked off its 31st edition Thursday night and continues through March 3, takes a comprehensive look back at virtually all the important movies made here over the past year and offers a handful of premi?res to lead us into the year ahead. More than 300 films will be shown, including 41 fiction features, 79 documentaries, 155 shorts and 23 student films.

From Kim Nguyen?s acclaimed child soldier saga Rebelle (up for an Oscar for best foreign-language film on Sunday night) to Xavier Dolan?s transgenderism odyssey Laurence Anyways (recently adopted by Gus Van Sant, who is co-producing the film?s U.S. release); via Bernard ?mond?s existential modern family drama Tout ce que tu poss?des; Magnus Isacsson?s final documentary, Ma vie r?elle, about disadvantaged youth in Montreal North; Yung Chang?s boxing doc China Heavyweight and taste travelogue The Fruit Hunters; Ana?s Barbeau-Lavalette?s Gaza thriller Inch?Allah (recent winner of the FIPRESCI Prize in the Panorama section at the Berlin Film Festival); to Michael Dowse?s hit hockey comedy Goon ? it?s all there.

?Everyone has talked about the crise in Quebec cinema,? said RVCQ director Dominique Dugas. ?There?s no crise. It?s going well. It?s more like a crisis at the box office ? people are not going to see (Quebec) films. But it?s very interesting to look at all the films released this year, at the quality of cinema in Quebec. And the Rendez-vous is the place to take the pulse of that cinema, in all its forms.?

While our independent films continued to garner attention at major festivals around the world, homemade blockbusters took a beating in Quebec in 2012. But even those films get a second chance at the RVCQ. Claude Desrosiers?s corruption epic L?Empire Bo$$?, Luc Dionne?s Mafia saga Omert?, Podz?s controversial wrongful-conviction tale L?affaire Dumont and ?ric Tessier?s kids?-hockey pic Les Pee-Wee 3D: L?hiver qui a chang? ma vie are all on the agenda.

But so is Denis C?t??s experimental park safari documentary Bestiaire, Brigitte Poupart?s stunning dance doc Over My Dead Body (which screened at the MOMA in March), Ivan Grbovic?s unconventional coming-of-age story Rom?o Onze and Federico Hidalgo?s quirky Latin-American immigrant lark L?incr?dule.

?Our approach is really to provide a retrospective of the year in film,? Dugas said, ?a panorama of the highlights, but to also go into the margins of independent cinema.?

Farther off the beaten track, the fest offers an array of documentaries, including Joe Balass?s gay nun tale Joie!; Yannick B. G?linas?s From Montr?al, on the city?s thriving bilingual indie music scene; Ben Addelman?s Kivalina v. Exxon, following an aboriginal town?s fight for survival; Shannon Walsh?s Johannesburg survey Jeppe on a Friday; Yanick L?tourneau?s African rap odyssey Les ?tats-Unis d?Afrique; Paule Baillargeon?s poetic self-portrait Trente tableaux; Paul Arcand?s teen drunk-driving wake-up call D?rapages; Nadine Gomez?s Le Horse Palace, about a holdout Griffintown stable; and Hugo Latulippe?s moving Alph?e des ?toiles, about his young daughter?s struggle to live with a rare disease.

The festival also boasts several notable premi?res, among which are Yan Lanouette Turgeon?s Roche papier ciseaux, which opened the fest on Thursday (see review on this page); Rafa?l Ouellet?s grad-night snapshot Finissant(e)s; Martin Laroche?s Les man?ges humains, in which a young filmmaker explores her troubled past as a child in Africa; and Fran?ois Delisle?s closing film Le m?t?ore (which just screened at the Berlin Film Festival), a sensorial look at the world of a prison inmate serving a 14-year sentence.

While the features draw the crowds, Dugas hopes they will lead people to discover the fest?s extensive range of shorts, packaged into convenient theme-driven programs with such headings as Animation, Coup de poing, Radical, Exp?rimental, Sombres fantaisies and Different View.

Nighttime is party time at the RVCQ, with daily events at the Cin?math?que qu?b?coise meant to merge film, music and schmoozing. Dolan hosts the not-to-be-missed shindig Xavier Anyways, Saturday at 11 p.m., featuring a performance by a secret (but well known) Montreal rock band. Wednesday is 10 ans sous micro_scope!, a bash thrown by the red hot production company (Incendies, Monsieur Lazhar, Inch?Allah). And March 1 is Les ?tats-Unis d?Afrique: Remix, with beats by Poirier and MC Boogat.

The state of the Quebec film industry will be dissected at two 5-?-7 panels at the Cin?math?que qu?b?coise: Qu?est-ce qu?un film qu?b?cois rentable? (What Is a Profitable Quebec Film?) on Monday, and Rayonnement international du cin?ma qu?b?cois (International Appeal of Quebec Cinema) on Wednesday.

?It?s part of a series of activities that put (Quebec) productions in perspective,? Dugas said. ?We?re thinking about our cinema. ? It?s a real festival that resembles no other festival in Montreal, dedicated to our cin?matographie nationale.?

Les Rendez-vous du cin?ma qu?b?cois runs through March 3. For more information, visit rvcq.com.
