Alabama club starts 'Food Stamp Friday' promotion

(AP) ? A nightclub in Alabama's capital city has come up with a unique theme night involving food support for needy families.

The Rose Supper Club in Montgomery will start "Food Stamp Friday" theme nights in April.

Manager Harman Wilson says the night is meant to complement the club's other theme nights, such as Fat Tuesday, Karaoke Wednesday or Thirsty Thursday.

Wilson says patrons will not be able to use their food stamps to buy alcoholic beverages. He says he hopes the novel approach will draw people to the club.

Human Resources Department spokesman Barry Sparks says the department does not approve of the promotion. He says food assistance benefits are meant to provide nourishment for hungry families.

Mayo Clinic - Mayo Clinic Study Finds Dramatic Rise in Skin Cancer ...

This article embargoed until Sunday, April 01, 2012, 11:05 p.m. Central Time

ROCHESTER, Minn. ? Even as the rates of some cancers are falling, Mayo Clinic is seeing an alarming trend: the dramatic rise of skin cancer, especially among people under 40. According to a study by Mayo Clinic researchers published in the April issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, the incidence of melanoma has escalated, and young women are the hardest hit.

TELECONFERENCE ALERT: Dr. Jerry Brewer will discuss the study and be available to answer questions during a teleconference briefing Wednesday, March 28, at 1:30 p.m. CDT. To receive call-in information for this briefing, please call 507-284-5005 or email newsbureau@mayo.edu.

VIDEO ALERT: Additional audio and video resources, including excerpts from an interview with Dr. Brewer will be available on the Mayo Clinic News Blog. The password is melanoma.

"We anticipated we'd find rising rates, as other studies are suggesting, but we found an even higher incidence than the National Cancer Institute had reported using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Result database, and in particular, a dramatic rise in women in their 20s and 30s," says lead investigator Jerry Brewer, M.D., a Mayo Clinic dermatologist.

Researchers conducted a population-based study using records from the Rochester Epidemiology Project, a decades-long database of all patient care in Olmsted County, Minn. They looked for first-time diagnoses of melanoma in patients 18 to 39 from 1970 to 2009. The study found the incidence of melanoma increased eightfold among young women and fourfold among young men. The lifetime risk of melanoma is higher in males than females, but the opposite is true in young adults and adolescents, Dr. Brewer says.

Researchers also found mortality rates from the disease have improved over the years, likely due to early detection of skin cancer and prompt medical care.

"People are now more aware of their skin and of the need to see a doctor when they see changes," Dr. Brewer says. "As a result, many cases may be caught before the cancer advances to a deep melanoma, which is harder to treat."

The researchers speculate that the use of indoor tanning beds is a key culprit in the rising cancer rate in young women.

"A recent study reported that people who use indoor tanning beds frequently are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma, and we know young women are more likely to use them than young men," Dr. Brewer says. Despite abundant information about the dangers of tanning beds, he adds, young women continue to use them. "The results of this study emphasize the importance of active interventions to decrease risk factors for skin cancer and, in particular, to continue to alert young women that indoor tanning has carcinogenic effects that increase the risk of melanoma."

Janey Helland, of Mapleton, Minn., didn't think twice when tanning in high school and college.

"I used tanning beds to get ready for homecoming and prom," she says. "In college, I tanned before a trip to Barbados because I didn't want to get sunburned." At age 21, Helland noticed an abnormal spot on her leg. It was melanoma, and the diagnosis changed Helland's life. "I really didn't know what my future was going to look like, or if I'd even have one."

Two years later, she is cancer-free and dedicated to educating others. "I would advocate that it's better to be safe than sorry," she says. "My advice is to educate yourself and research the risk factors."

Childhood sunburns and ultraviolet exposure in adulthood may also contribute to melanoma development, the researchers say.

The study was funded in part by the National Institutes of Health. Other authors include Kurtis Reed, M.D., Christine Lohse, Kariline Bringe, Crystal Pruitt, and Lawrence Gibson, M.D. all of Mayo Clinic.

Time To Rocket Your Internet Marketing Business Into The ...

Watch how your brand is discussed online, then use this type of language in your advertising copy. Using terms that your customers are already comfortable with will allow you to reach them on a more familiar level. If you use language people understand, you will convert more customers.

To be successful in business, it?s very important to have an accurate mailing list that includes an many of your customers as possible. Consider making it a setting on your webpage that in order for someone to purchase something, they have to use their email address or consider adding a sign- up box. This address can be then used for either sales letters, promotions or seeking feedback on their recent purchasing experience.

Your banner ads should stand out from the crowd as much as possible. So give your banner ad a more appealing look to entice more people to click it.

The address of your company?s website should be something that?s easy for people to remember. Try and incorporate your business? name within the URL of your website. Make your address one that is easy to remember.

Save the money necessary to purchase a quality domain name. You probably won?t find the exact domain name for your company. If you can muster up $1,000 to $2,000, you?ll be able to afford a domain name that closely fits your company.

Keep customers coming back by sending coupons with every purchase. Many people look at the coupons with gratitude and as an added incentive to go back to a website and make more purchases.

Include some personal information in your campaign. Include your personal name in your advertisements; on your website, add a photo of yourself. Another good idea is to create a handwritten sales letter to your visitors.

Exclusive: China Communist Party scandal triggered by British man's death: source

BEIJING (Reuters) - The scandal shaking China's ruling Communist Party just as it readies for leadership change was triggered by claims that the wife of one ambitious candidate was involved in the death of a British businessman, said a source with close ties to key individuals involved.

The comments, corroborated by two other sources who also spoke on condition of anonymity, are the first direct account of events which eventually led to this month's downfall of Chongqing mega-city chief Bo Xilai who had very publicly bid for a place in the Party's inner circle later this year.

The source, citing accounts coming from an unfinished central investigation, said it was unclear how much truth there was to the claim by Bo's former police chief, Wang Lijun, but he told Reuters he had "no doubt" that Wang had raised it with Bo.

Wang told Bo in late January that he believed Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, was involved in the death of British businessman Neil Heywood in the southwest Chinese city in mid-November, the source said.

The account helps explain the apparent rupture between the city chief and Wang, who led Bo's widely applauded crackdown on crime in China's most populous metropolis.

In early February, Wang briefly sought refuge in the U.S. consulate in Chengdu, several hours' drive from Chongqing, which suddenly made the growing scandal public.

Bo, 62, and his wife have disappeared from public view since his abrupt removal on March 15 as party chief of Chongqing, and they cannot respond publicly to the rumors and reports. Nor can Wang, who is under investigation.

The Chongqing government has not answered repeated phone calls and faxed questions from Reuters about the circumstances of Bo's downfall and Heywood's death. The central government has said the results of its investigation into Wang's flight to the consulate will be released, but to date it has not offered a detailed account.

BO SCORNS ACCUSATIONS

The Foreign Ministry has also not answered questions about Heywood, with a spokesman saying that he had no information.

In a news conference days before his dismissal, Bo scorned as nonsense unspecified accusations of misdeeds by his wife and said some people were pouring "filth on my family". Gu was formerly a high-powered lawyer.

"Wang Lijun has told central investigators that Gu Kailai turned on the British man because of economic interests and that she wanted to destroy him (Heywood)," said the source, who is generally sympathetic to Bo.

Beijing- and London-based relatives of Heywood told Reuters in separate interviews that they did not suspect foul play in his death. They both spoke on condition of anonymity.

"It's preposterous. The more description (in the media), the darker it becomes," the family member said, occasionally breaking into tears in an interview in the lobby lounge of a hotel on the outskirts of Beijing late on Thursday.

The family denied reports that Heywood was a spy and that he was cremated against their wishes.

"We requested the cremation. We were not forced to do so. We have no doubts about the police report," said one family member.

The British Embassy in Beijing has asked the Chinese government to reinvestigate his death, attributed by Chongqing police to cardiac arrest due to over-consumption of alcohol.

Heywood, 41, was not a heavy drinker, but was a chain smoker. His father, Peter, also died of a heart attack after drinks over dinner at his London home in 2004 at age 63, the family members said.

Bo's dismissal has also raised questions over whether China's leaders will start to attack his popular "Chongqing model" that he said promoted more equitable development in the world's second biggest economy but where much of the population still struggles to make a living.

"The split in the public reflects rifts among leaders over views of Chongqing," said the source.

"Bo Xilai was a bold experimenter who was like a catfish stirring up China's stagnant political pond. His enemies couldn't catch him until now," said the source, who knows Bo and his family and has close ties to other senior leaders.

He said that according to Wang, Gu believed Heywood had abused or taken Bo family funds to which the Briton might have had access. Heywood's family members said he had no business dealings with the Bos.

CONFRONTATION

The source's account of Wang Lijun's accusations tallies with details that have emerged about the drama that unfolded before he took flight to the U.S. consulate in Chengdu, where he stayed for 24 hours before officials coaxed him out.

The emerging accounts help explain why central leaders decided to risk the aftershocks triggered by unseating Bo, an ex-commerce minister known both for revolutionary style populism and for his courting of multinationals.

By the time Wang arrived at the U.S. consulate, his relationship with his long-time patron, Bo, had already curdled into mutual distrust, said the source.

According to the source and previous accounts reported by Reuters, Wang feared that Bo, eager to preserve his reputation and chances for a spot in the next central leadership, could turn on him after central party investigators began probing Wang's past.

About a week before his flight to the consulate, Wang told Bo about his suspicions about the death of Heywood, a business consultant who was instrumental in Bo's son attending Harrow, an exclusive private school in England.

Heywood knew the Bo family from the time when he lived in China's northeastern port city of Dalian, where Bo was mayor from 1993 to 2000.

"(Wang) told Bo that the problem couldn't be covered up," said the source.

Bo was outraged, said the source, who has met both men. Days later, Bo demoted Wang to the much less powerful role of vice mayor for education, culture and science.

Bo initially tried to muffle the allegations, but the former police chief's flight to the consulate brought the rupture between the men into the open, said the source.

Even if Wang's suspicions over Heywood's death prove unfounded, Bo's initial failure to report the case could end his political career, said the source.

"In the central leadership's view, that was too late. They said he should have reported the problem as soon as Wang Lijun raised allegations about Gu Kailai."

Group urges provinces to take quick action for patients with deadly form of skin cancer

VANCOUVER, BC, March 30, 2012 ? National skin cancer groups have come together to commend pCODR (pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review), for recognizing the clinical value of the newest treatments for melanoma. Joining the Save Your Skin Foundation are the Alberta Society of Melanoma, The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Skin Patient Alliance.

?This news is the hope the melanoma community has been waiting on for years,? said Kathy Barnard, founder of Save Your Skin Foundation and a melanoma patient herself. ?Recently there have been great strides in terms of skin cancer prevention with several provinces moving to implement tanning bed legislation. It?s now time to turn to treating this deadly cancer and today?s announcement is a step in the right direction. We are hopeful that the provinces will continue to put emphasis on the importance of melanoma and make these two treatments available to patients as soon as possible.?

In its late stages, the average life expectancy for melanoma is just six months, with a one-year survival rate of only 25 percent, making metastatic melanoma one of the most aggressive forms of cancer and one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer. An estimated 5,500 Canadians will be diagnosed with melanoma this year and 950 will die from it. Melanoma is responsible for 75 percent of the deaths associated with skin cancer.

?This is a major first step and shows that pCODR has recognized the significant progress these two treatments represent for patients,? said Dr. Jo?l Claveau, Dermatologist at the Melanoma and Pigmented Lesions Clinic, Hospital H?tel-Dieu de Qu?bec. ?Physicians have desperately needed new advances and it?s encouraging that now we have two new options. Historically melanoma is a difficult cancer to treat and now with Yervoy and Zelboraf we have a chance to make a difference in survival for patients.?

About Melanoma in Canada
Every year, thousands of Canadians are diagnosed with melanoma, with the incidence of the disease increasing faster than that of any other cancer. Melanoma is a deadly form of skin cancer characterized by the uncontrolled growth of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) located in the skin. One in 74 men and 1 in 90 women are expected to develop melanoma during their lifetime; 1 in 284 men and 1 in 486 women will die of it. Melanoma is clearly visible on the skin, and 90 per cent of melanomas are caused by exposure to UV light, including tanning beds.

Dr. Harry Dietz receives March of Dimes Colonel Harland Sanders Award for Lifetime Achievement in Genetic Sciences

CHARLOTTE, NC -- A long-time clinician and researcher on Marfan syndrome who helped identify the syndrome's genetic cause and a potential treatment will be honored by the March of Dimes.

Harry (Hal) Dietz, MD, the Victor A. McKusick Professor of Institute of Genetic Medicine and Professor of Pediatrics, at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, will receive the March of Dimes/Colonel Harland Sanders Award for Lifetime Achievement in the field of genetic sciences. Dr. Joe Leigh Simpson, senior vice president for Research and Global Programs of the March of Dimes, will present the award to Dr. Dietz today during the annual Clinical Genetics Meeting of the American College of Medical Genetics at Charlotte Convention Center.

Marfan syndrome is an inherited connective tissue disorder that affects about 1 in 5,000 people. The syndrome is caused by a genetic defect which causes overgrowth of the body's long bones and affects the tissue that strengthens the body's structures, including the skeletal system, cardiovascular system, eyes, and skin.

Those who have the syndrome tend to be tall with arms and legs much longer than expected for their height. Also, in those with Marfan syndrome, the aorta, the main blood vessel that takes blood from the heart to the body, may stretch or become weak, leading to an aneurysm.

In 1991, Dr. Dietz was a member of the team that identified the gene for Marfan syndrome. In 2006, his team's research showed that an FDA-approved high blood pressure medication, losartan, prevented and reversed aortic enlargement in mice with Marfan syndrome.

Dr. Dietz received his medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center in 1984. He joined Johns Hopkins University Hospital in 1984 as a pediatric resident, became a Fellow in Cardiology there 1988, went on to pursue his post doctorate work at John Hopkins as wells and continues his research there today.

He was named the Richard Starr Ross Research Scholar, he received the Richard D. Rowe Award for outstanding research in Pediatric Cardiology, the Young Investigator Award, Society for Pediatric Research, and the Antoine Marfan Award, from the National Marfan Foundation. Dr. Dietz also is a member of the Board of Governors, National Human Genome Research Institute, a member of the American Society for Pediatric Research and the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Sandy Carter of IBM - Small Business Trends

When it comes to social media, the old adage, ?build it and they will come? simply doesn?t apply. Putting up a Facebook page and creating a Twitter or YouTube account just isn?t enough. In order for businesses to use social media effectively, they must leverage it by building it into their business processes to truly give them the competitive advantage. ?Sandy Carter, Vice President of Social Business Evangelism at IBM joins Brent Leary for an in-depth discussion on becoming a social business.

* * * * *

Sandy Carter of IBM

Small Business Trends: Can touch on how you became Vice President of Social Business Evangelism at IBM?

Sandy Carter: At IBM we like to help our clients in new markets. ?As we do that, part of what we like to do for clients is to add value. ?Teach them about the new market and show them the value and actually become the social business ourselves.

So Brent, for the last four or five years in my businesses, I have used social to grow my businesses. Whether that was in marketing or strategy, social has always been a part of the way that I run and drive the bottom line of my businesses.

When we really saw this trend and had seen the change in the way we worked, IBM wanted someone who could help and teach clients not just how to do things, but someone who had actually done it. That is when they came to me about a year and a half ago and asked if I would like to do this job. ?Of course I jumped at it because it is just a great space. ?I love to work with clients and teach them to make their business more competitive.

Small Business Trends: What is the difference between a company that uses social media and a company that is a social business?

Sandy Carter: A social business is one that leverages social in its business processes. Not someone that says. ?Oh, I have a Facebook page. ?I have a Twitter account.? It is someone who has social embedded into sales, HR talent management, product innovation, customer service. It?s about taking these tools and techniques and making those processes much more competitive. Not just playing with it and putting an application on YouTube. ?Is it embedded into the company?s workflow? ?Into the soul of the company? ?Which I consider to be a business process.

Small Business Trends: What is the challenge when it comes to ?big data? in becoming a social business?

Sandy Carter: My favorite saying is that analytics is the ?new black.?

There is so much information out on the Web that a small or mid-size company using social analytics can introduce so much marketing intelligence, so much insight, so much trend spotting . . .that to me, it is such an invaluable source that small and medium businesses have never had. Something that had given larger businesses the competitive advantage.

The issue is that about 80% of that data is unstructured because it is a conversation among customers. ?So you have to use tools like social analytics to make sense of that data. ?To really unlock that valuable insight, I believe.

Just one quick example. Seton Hall University, which is a medium size university in terms of the number of employees, say there is a crises in the number of students coming into their school. ?That is how they make money ? with tuition. They leveraged social analytics on their Facebook page and found that potential students to Seton Hall were more likely to attend if they had a relationship with alumni.

Using that data, they went out and invited alumni into a Facebook group, the class of 2014. ?They got the dialogues going and started the relationships online. Then they found that the potential students wanted some interactions with professors and wanted to know others in their areas. ?So they again leveraged that big data they had in that group and they made those connections.

The results are very powerful when you harness that data. ?The class of 2014 is the largest matriculating class in Seton Hall history. ?And all from leveraging the social analytics and the Facebook group.

Small Business Trends: Are there any other necessary steps to think about and incorporate in addition to social analytics?

Sandy Carter: Yes, I would say another step is identifying your influencers. What I mean by that is, regardless of the size of your clientele, research shows from multiple sources that about 15% of your clients impact and influence the rest of your clients.

So online think about that. ?Who are those 15%? ?How do you develop a relationship with them online? How do you use social tools do to that? Again, there are tools out there that will help you identify those 15% so that you can start a relationship.

There was a small regional bank I was working with. We looked at using one of the widgets that was developed by IBM. ?We looked at who were the most influential in their regional area. They invited those people into the bank, showed them their services, got input from them, changed some things, and have really reaped the benefits of that close relationship, with this new ?advisory group? that came out of identifying those influencers. ?Those tips from people who talked about them online.

So I think really understanding who those influencers are online is really important. ?You cannot do it just by the customer who has the most followers. ?You really need to look at those who have the most influence in a particular subject matter area.

Small Business Trends: What are the top reasons that companies are NOT able to be successful in making the transition?

Sandy Carter: I think that one of the first ones is putting up a Facebook page and not embedding social into your workflow.

The second one is thinking that you are going to do something social, you are going to put it up and then you kind of forget it. ??One and done? is the what I call it. But social is about a relationship, it is about people. ?That requires being responsive.

A great example of that, and this is a larger company but, KLM Airlines has promised a 15 minute response time on a tweet it you have a problem. I recently tested it out in Amsterdam and sure enough I tweeted that I got stuck in an airport and they helped me out in ten minutes. Another airline I tweeted responded six months later. They came back to me and said, ?We are working on it, we are working on it?.?

Small Business Trends: Where can people learn more?

Sandy Carter: Go to IBM.com and search on Social Business. ?There?s a set of case studies there.

Mortality Up in RA when Statins Stopped - Arthritis ... - Health.am

? Arthritis ? ? Rheumatic Diseases ? Mar 29, 2012

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis who stop taking their Statins are at greatly increased risk of death, a longitudinal study found.

After adjustment for variables including age, sex, and comorbidities, patients who discontinued statin therapy had a 60% increase in cardiovascular mortality (HR 1.60, 95% CI 1.15 to 2.23, P=0.005), according to Mary A. De Vera, PhD, of the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada in Vancouver, and colleagues.

Discontinuation also was associated with a 79% increase in all-cause mortality (HR 1.79, 95% CI 1.46 to 2.20, P

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have twice the risk of cardiovascular mortality compared with the general population, and Statins are recommended in these patients for cholesterol lowering and to prevent ischemic heart disease.

Previous studies have suggested that more than half of all individuals who are prescribed Statins eventually stop taking them, and De Vera?s group reported earlier that more than one-third of patients with rheumatoid arthritis discontinued the drugs over an 8-year period.

To explore the impact of this on mortality, the researchers analyzed data from an established cohort of 37,000 patients with rheumatoid arthritis in British Columbia, and determined that 4,102 had been prescribed a statin.

- Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), with these patients having twice the risk of CVD mortality compared to individuals in the general population.

- This population-based longitudinal study indicates that statin discontinuation in RA patients is associated with increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease and from all causes.

- Mean age of the patients was 66.6 years, and mean disease duration was 19 months. A total of 60% were women.

During 16,144 person-years of follow-up, 45.4% of patients discontinued taking a statin.

And during a mean follow-up of 4 years, there were 467 deaths from any cause and 198 deaths from cardiovascular disease. Among patients who died of cardiovascular disease, the most common causes were acute myocardial infarction in 31.3%, ischemic heart disease in 30.8%, and cerebrovascular accidents in 15.2%.

Aside from statin discontinuation, other factors associated with heightened risk of cardiovascular death were:

Older age, HR 1.07 (95% CI 1.05 to 1.09, P Male sex, HR 1.53 (95% CI 1.15 to 2.04, P=0.004)
Previous myocardial infarction, HR 1.47 (95% CI 1.03 to 2.09, P=0.03)
Use of antihypertensive medications, HR 1.87 (95% CI 1.26 to 2.78, P=0.002)
Use of heart failure medications, HR 1.79 (95% CI 1.31 to 2.45, P=0.0002)

The researchers also calculated the effects of time since discontinuation and found a 0.4% increase in cardiovascular mortality for each month since stopping treatment (HR 1.004, 95% CI 1.001 to 1.016).

For all-cause mortality, factors other than stopping statin treatment that were associated with risk included:

Older age, HR 1.07 (95% CI 1.05 to 1.08, P Male sex, HR 1.40 (95% CI 1.17 to 1.69, P=0.0004)
Higher comorbidity scores, HR 1.18 (95% CI 1.10 to 1.25, P Previous hospitalization for infection, HR 1.36 (95% CI 1.03 to 1.78, P=0.02)
Use of antihypertensive medications, HR 1.64 (95% CI 1.29 to 2.08, P Use of heart failure medications, HR 1.59 (95% CI 1.31 to 1.94, P

Current arthritis treatments also influenced all-cause mortality, according to the researchers.

How Attitudes About Investing Have Changed Over the Generations ...

The stock market has seen some major downturns in the past 10 years ? the decade when Gen Y began considering investment options for the first time. It?s no surprise that, as a generation, this age group has been reluctant to?start?investing. In fact, according to the?Investment Company Institute, investors born in the seventies and later are less likely to own any equities than their parents or grandparents did at the same age. There is a fundamental difference in how different generations see?investing, and it may have long-lasting impacts.

Generation Why?

Adam Koos, a?Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and president of Libertas Wealth Management, sees generational differences play out in his office every day. He falls into the Gen X age group, himself, and sees a big difference in where he started out and where Gen Y and later generations start out. Immediately following college, he had less than $20,000 in student debt, while he has successful Gen Y clients who have more than twice that amount. He calls the age group ?Gen Why?? because ?Why would we?invest?? They?re young and too busy paying off college loans.

While many?Gen Y members do have investments, they?re likely to be through defined contribution plans, such as?401(k)s. Vanguard reports that participants in such plans have minimal engagement with them: once a participant has enrolled, he or she rarely modifies any allocations or?investment?strategies until a life event forces a change.

Attitudes

In contrast, Koos??Baby Boomer clientele is far more interested in their investments. Their attitudes are very focused on providing for retirement or even augmenting their current incomes from employment. Koos says, ?They?re playing catch-up, whether it be because they?re divorced, didn?t save enough money or borrowed too much against their?Home Equity Lines of Credit (for home improvement, cars, vacations and college costs for their kids).

As a result, they?re having a hard time finding a job that pays what they?re used to, once they?re laid off by their employer, who?s figured out they can hire a new, highly trained, tech-savvy college grad, for a fraction of the cost.? It?s created a situation for many of these investors where they feel the need to be more conservative with their investments, but can only get what they need?by being aggressive.

Both Gen X and Baby Boomers have seen booms, with industries like real estate and technology growing rapidly. They?ve seen that taking some risks with an?investment?strategy can pay off. Their investment attitudes are balanced by that fact, as well as how investments have performed over the past few years.

However, Koos does have one client group that seems to have found comfortable approaches to investing ? those who grew up during the Great Depression, also known as the Silent Generation. Koos describes his older clients??investment attitude: ?They withdraw a small chunk of change from their portfolios each month (if I can get them to do so), with the intention of spending it ? only to come back in for their next appointment with a bigger check than last time, from all the money they saved from their social security, pension and investment income.?

The Bottom Line

These attitudes are bound to change over time: most members of Generation Y are thinking about paying down college loans right now. Marriage and parenthood are the big milestones in their lives. Retirement is decades off, making investing for it a low priority. The big question is just what direction Gen Y will take when investing becomes more of a priority.

Will this age group be willing to take risks in a?stock?market that hasn?t yet offered good returns since they graduated high school? It?s possible that investors in the Gen Y age group will be very conservative, compared to past generations ? maybe even?too conservative for their own good.

Spiders in Borneo: Entangled and pierced

You?re walking through a Borneo rainforest, keeping your eyes focused on shrubs and tree trunks that might be good opportunities for spider hunting, and suddenly your forward progress is halted. Three possible explanations: (1) You?re in one of those nightmares where you keep trying to get somewhere but mysteriously can?t move. (2) You?ve become entangled in vines across your path. (3) A rattan palm has you in its spiny clutches. No nightmares yet for me on this expedition, but the other two occur several times each day.

Vines (or ?lianas?) crisscross a tropical forest like a tangled spider web, at all heights from the ground to the forest canopy. Indeed, there are so many lianas among the trees, some as thick as a small tree?s trunk, that when one tree falls from a storm or decay, it may pull down surrounding trees by their connecting lianas. For me, raised in the temperate zone, the idea of so many vines is unexpected. I expect plants to grow vertically, not diagonally or horizontally. I don?t pay enough attention for lianas as I walk, and often I am suddenly held as in this photo of my entangled leg. I rarely trip, but I am sometimes befuddled as to how to untie the knot I am in.

Entangled in vines.

Entangled in vines.

Vines are stubborn foes, but not nearly so cruel as the terror of the Bornean jungle, rattan palms. The central rib of each multi-part leaf extends beyond the leaf as a long filament reaching into space. These filaments can cross a meter or more, linking to another plant like a liana?s tendrils. It would be just another vine entangling me ? except that along the filament?s length are many small backward-pointing spines. It?s as if the forest were criss-crossed by meters-long hacksaw blades. When one catches my clothes, I feel a sharp tug and I?m stuck.

Sometimes, I can twirl around and I?ll get unstuck, but other times I have to try to grab the spiny tendril (gingerly) and pull it away. Of course, sometimes it?s not my clothes but my skin that the spines dig into as I charge through the forest. Luckily, most of the blood lost has been from my hands, not my neck. I?d mentioned in a previous post that Edy voted the leeches as her biggest annoyance; for me, it?s the rattan palms.

Why do rattan palms have these tendrils that inflict suffering, apparently gratuitously, meters from the plant?s body? They don?t seem to make sense as protective devices against animals. Instead, the spines serve to keep hold on other plants that the palm uses for support. But, why might the palm want to borrow support from other plants?

My shirt, pierced and held by the ferocious rattan.

My shirt, pierced and held by the ferocious rattan.

Look at a forest, and a question might occur to you: why do the trees invest so much into those tall trunks that don?t photosynthesize and don?t pull in water and minerals? If only the trees could all agree to be short, they could divert the resources that make the trunk instead into flowers and fruit. But, of course, they don?t cooperate, but rather compete, and their competition for precious light compels them to build massive trunks to lift against gravity and outreach their neighbors.

Lianas that rise up through the forest along the trunks of trees are, in one sense, parasites. They avoid investing in a trunk, but can still reach high into the light by using the infrastructure built by the trees. I like to think of them as ?gravity parasites?. (Actually, this name isn?t quite right, as they are parasites of the effort against gravity, but ?gravity parasites? is more poetic.) Rattan palms play the same game, maintaining with their spines their hold on upward-growing plants. Plants play cruel games with each other and with animals. And you thought plants were so innocent.

?A Better You? Your Seven days program to self-improvement ...

There are many ways to eliminate your sense of self-esteem despite of how trivial it could get. But whatever happens, we should all try not to lose our own feeling of self.

So what will it really take to be a cut above the rest? Here are some of the things that you can think along with improve on that should be enough for a week.

1. Know your purpose
Have you been wandering through life with little path ? hoping that you?ll find happiness, health insurance and prosperity? Identify your life purpose or goal statement and you will have your unique compass that will make you your truth north every time.

This may look tricky at first if you notice yourself to be in a tight or even dead end. However, there is always that minor loophole to turn things about and you can make a huge difference to yourself.

Couple of. Know your attitudes
What do you benefit most? Make a list of your respective top 5 values. Some situations are security, flexibility, family, spiritual progress, learning. As you arranged your goals to get 2005 ? check your goals against the values. If the goal doesn?t align with any of your top five attitudes ? you may want to reevaluate it or modify it.

The number need not discourage you, as an alternative it should motivate you to perform more than you can ever desired.

3. Know your family needs
Unmet needs can keep via living authentically. Take care of yourself. Do you have a have to be acknowledged, to be appropriate, to be in control, for being loved? There are so many folks that lived their life without realizing their very own dreams and most ones end up being stressed or simply depressed for that matter. Listing your top a number of needs and get these folks met before it?s too late!

4. Know your hobbies and interests
You know who you are and also what you truly take pleasure in in life. Obstacles just like doubt and not enough enthusiasm will only prevent you, but will not derail your chance in becoming the person you ought to be. Express yourself and honour the people who has influenced you to become the rather person you wanted to become.

5. Live internally
Increase your awareness of the inner wisdom through regularly reflecting without moaning. Commune with nature. Breathe deeply to quiet a person?s distracted mind. For many of us city slickers it?s hard for you to even find the peace and quiet we want even in each of our home.
