Goophone I5 manages to KIRF the 2012 iPhone weeks in advance

Here's something you still don't see every day: a KIRF that's unveiled before the device it's supposed to copy. Although the 2012 iPhone may not show for weeks, the Android-based Goophone I5 is already doing a remarkable job of aping Apple's rumored style, including that two-tone look that we've all seen before. Just don't get notions that it's the bargain of the century. Where most rumors point to a bigger screen for the real thing, the I5 is making do with a 3.5-inch screen similar to that for Goophone's iPhone 4S imitator, the Y5. Performance isn't likely to jolt the engineers in Cupertino out of their seats, either. Mum's the word on whether or not the I5 will beat its inspiration to the store shelf, but we'd wager that it will cost a lot less.

By NBC News wire reports

Updated at 2:56 a.m. ET: A strong magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of El Salvador late Sunday, temporarily sparking a tsunami warning.

The earthquake was followed an hour later by a second, magnitude-5.4 temblor, authorities said.

However, the tsunami warning covering Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama and Mexico was later canceled.?

There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.

David Walsh, an oceanographer with the Pacific Tsunami Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, said a minor, 7.8-inch swell was registered off Acajutla, El?Salvador.

The earthquake struck 74 miles south of Usulutan, El Salvador, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on its website.

The temblor took place at a depth of 32.9 miles at 10:37 p.m. Sunday.

On Sunday, dozens of small to moderate earthquakes struck southeastern California, knocking trailer homes off their foundations and shattering windows in a small farming town east of San Diego. The largest quake registered at a magnitude 5.5 and was centered about three miles (five kilometers) northwest of the town of Brawley, according to the USGS. Another quake about an hour and a half earlier registered at magnitude 5.3. No injuries were reported.

Enlisting the AIDS virus to fight cancer

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Can HIV be transformed into a biotechnological tool for improving human health? According to a CNRS team at the Architecture et R?activit? de l'ARN (RNA Architecture and Reactivity) laboratory, the answer is yes. Taking advantage of the HIV replication machinery, the researchers have been able to select a specific mutant protein. Added to a culture of tumor cells in combination with an anticancer drug, this protein improves the effectiveness of the treatment at 1/300 the normal dosage levels.

Published in PLoS Genetics on 23 August 2012, these findings could lead to long-term therapeutic applications in the treatment of cancer and other pathologies.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, uses human cell material to multiply, primarily by inserting its genetic material into the host cells' genome. The distinctive characteristic of HIV is that it mutates constantly, and consequently generates several mutant proteins (or variants) in the course of its successive multiplications. This phenomenon allows the virus to adapt to repeated environmental changes and resist the antiviral treatments that have been developed so far.

At the IBMC (Institut de Biologie Mol?culaire et Cellulaire) in Strasbourg, the researchers of the CNRS Architecture et R?activit? de l'ARN laboratory had the idea of using this multiplication strategy to rechannel the effects of the virus for therapeutic purposes, in particular the treatment of cancer.

They first altered the HIV genome by introducing a human gene that is found in all cells: the gene for deoxycytidine kinase (dCK), a protein that activates anticancer drugs (2). Researchers have been trying to produce a more effective form of dCK for several years. Through HIV multiplication, the CNRS team has selected a "library" of nearly 80 mutant proteins and tested them on tumor cells in the presence of an anticancer drug. The results have enabled them to identify a dCK variant that is more effective than the wild-type (non-mutated) protein, inducing the death of tumor cells in culture. In combination with this protein, the anticancer drugs showed identical effectiveness at 1/300 the dose. The possibility of reducing the doses of anticancer drugs would palliate the problems posed by their components' toxicity, reduce their side effects and, most importantly, improve their effectiveness.

One advantage of this experimental technique is that the mutant proteins were tested directly on cells in culture. The next step in the years to come will be preclinical (animal) studies on the isolated mutant protein. In addition, this experimental system using a normally life-threatening virus is likely to lead to a great many other therapeutic applications.

How to tell your kids you are splitting up | Phoenix Divorce Attorneys ...

It's one of the hardest things you'll ever have to do as parents: tell your children that you are getting a divorce. Most parents spend days or even months trying to figure out the best way to tell their kids that they will be splitting. Recently, the Huffington Post featured an article laying out a step-by-step guide on how to do it right.

First, the article said both parents should talk with a child or family to get advice on how to tell your kids you're splitting up in the least painful way possible. It's very important for both parents to take part in the conversation, the article said, and the script should be planned ahead of time.

Next, the article said to pick a place to talk to your children that feels safe and does not involve friends or relatives. Be sensitive not to have "the talk" before a big test, holiday or birthday.

During the discussion, the article said to start with the positives. For example, discuss that you both love your children very much and want to keep things at home as similar as possible. The article said to be sure to tell the children that it is not their fault that you are getting a divorce.

The article also said to avoid assigning blame and to make it seem like the divorce was a joint decision, even if this isn't entirely true. Unfortunately, you're going to have to expect some tears, the article said. Even though you're not being intentionally hurtful, sometimes the truth hurts.

Following the discussion, the article said to expect questions from your children, and answer them honestly without assigning any blame. Finally, the article said that both parents should stay at the family home the night the news is broken, if at all possible. This will prevent a feeling of abandonment.

These are all good tips for parents grappling with how to tell their kids they are getting divorced. For more advice, talk to a family therapist or your divorce lawyer.

California Air Quality Benefiting From Clean Diesel Advancements

WASHINGTON--Aug. 23, 2012: The California Air Resources Board (ARB) and Port of Los Angeles have reported dramatic improvements in air quality in recent years due to new clean diesel technology and they predict more improvements in coming years. However, in an opinion piece in The Los Angeles Times (Aug. 13), former Sierra Club executive Carl Pope downplayed these major accomplishments and was critical of California enforcement and the diesel industry work in the state.

Allen Schaeffer, the Executive Director of the Diesel Technology Forum, issued the following statement outlining the significant progress in California's air quality programs and advancements in clean diesel technology.

"In seeking to make a simple point to urge the California Air Resources Board (ARB) to enforce its own regulations, Carl Pope's piece "Cracking down on Diesel" ignores the significant improvements in clean diesel technology during the past decade. It also diminishes the efforts of thousands of California truckers, contractors and others who have upgraded their equipment and invested in new clean diesel technology.

"Together, these accomplishments have dramatically benefited California's air quality and officials at the highest levels of California government have called diesel advancements a success story.

"The gains in clean diesel technology are largely due to the regulations and standards created by the ARB and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and have resulted in new diesel fuel, engines and equipment that today emit near zero emissions."

New Diesel Trucks and Buses Have Reduced NOx Emissions By 99% And PM Emissions By 98%

"Over the last 10 years, emissions from heavy-duty diesel trucks and buses have been reduced by 99 percent for nitrogen oxides (NOx) - an ozone precursor - and 98 percent for particulate emissions to meet California and EPA requirements, making them near-zero emissions vehicles. Off-road engines and equipment are now in the final phase of the same transition. Critical to this progress has been the availability of ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel, which has reduced sulfur emissions by 97 percent --from 500 PM to 15 PM - enabling advanced emissions control devices.

"No other sector has done more to improve California's air quality in the last decade than diesel. According to the ARB, particulate emissions from heavy-duty diesel trucks have declined from 7.5 percent of the overall state inventory in 1990 to 3.8 percent in 2008, and by 2020 it will be just 1.6 percent. The ARB projects that from 2008 to 2020, while emissions of all sources of PM are expected to increase by 3.2 percent, PM from all diesels will decline by 58 percent."

Port of Los Angeles Has Seen Diesel Particulate Matter Decrease by 71%

"For example, the Port of Los Angeles, which instituted a landmark equipment upgrade and replacement program reports that as of January 2012, 100 percent of the drayage trucks hauling containers are now 2007 or newer models and particulate emissions from diesel use in the ports fell by 71 percent between 2005 and 2011. That translated into a reduction of diesel share of particulate emissions from 7 to 3 percent in the South Coast Air Basin.

"While the World Health Organization chose to focus on retrospective studies of 50-year-old diesel engines, the Health Effects Institute, ARB, EPA, diesel engine manufacturers and others have studied and found post-2007 newer diesel engines are cleaner and emit even fewer emissions than anticipated. As for adoption of this new technology, Mr. Pope says the problem is getting worse on the basis that growth in diesel truck use will offset the emissions gains from new technology diesel engines. That premise is faulty. It would take 60 of today's near-zero emission diesel trucks to equal the PM emissions from a single 1988 truck.

"Recent data from R.L Polk and Diesel Technology Forum estimates suggest that, nationally, more than a third of all the trucks on the road today are 2007 or newer clean diesel technology, and California is very likely ahead of that. Sales of new heavy-duty clean diesel trucks are up by 20 percent over last year in large part because of the 5 percent gains in fuel economy from the new technology that not only translates into cost savings for truckers, but fewer emissions of greenhouse gases and near zero particulate and smog-forming emissions.

"There are more verified and effective diesel retrofit technologies available today than ever before. From the very beginning, the diesel industry has been an active and strong supporter of important government efforts such as California's Carl Moyer Program and the federal Diesel Emissions Reduction Act.

"Today the diesel industry continues to work closely with users, environmental, community and public health groups to support these valuable programs. We'd welcome Mr. Pope's help in this effort."

Rights group urges Vietnam to probe dissident beating

Human Rights Watch on Tuesday called on Vietnam to investigate a violent attack on a prominent dissident lawyer involved in a string of anti-China demonstrations.

Le Quoc Quan, who blogs on a range of sensitive topics including civil rights, political pluralism and religious freedom, told AFP he was struck with a steel baton near his Hanoi home on Sunday.

"I was hit three times on my knee, my thigh and my back... I think the police are behind the attack," he said, adding that he believed the incident was meant to discourage his activism in the one-party communist state.

"It will have a counter-effect," Quan said. "I do nothing wrong. What I am working for is good. Why should I not keep working?"

There was no immediate comment from the Vietnamese authorities.

Quan, a Catholic in the majority Buddhist nation, was jailed for three months in 2007 for participating in "activities to overthrow the people's government" but was released following protests from the United States.

In addition to his blogs, he was heavily involved in a string of anti-China demonstrations last year over Beijing's territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Vietnamese lawyers, bloggers and activists are regularly subject to arbitrary arrest and detention, according to New York-based Human Rights Watch, which said Quan was being targeted for his work.

"Le Quoc Quan has continuously sought to use his legal skills to represent those being persecuted for asserting their rights, and now he's become a target," HRW deputy director Phil Robertson told AFP.

"Top-level leaders in Hanoi need to ensure that the authorities conduct a credible and transparent investigation into this violent attack and hold accountable anyone they find responsible."

Cartoon stickers may sway kids' food choices: study

(Reuters) - Can Elmo make children like apples?

For children who turn up their noses at fruits and vegetables, slapping a cartoon face on a healthy snack may make those choices more appealing, according to a U.S. study.

Researchers, whose findings appeared in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, discovered that when elementary school students were offered apples and cookies with lunch, children were more likely to opt for an apple when it was branded with a cartoon sticker - such as one of the "Sesame Street" character Elmo.

"If we're trying to promote healthier foods, we need to be as smart as the companies that are selling the less-healthy foods," said David Just, co-director of the Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics in Child Nutrition Program, who worked on the study.

Noting that cartoon characters and flashy advertising often don cookie and candy packaging, he added, "The message should be: fight fire with fire."

Just and his colleagues offered cookies and apples to 208 eight- to 11-year-olds at suburban and rural schools every day at lunch for a week. Children were allowed to choose an apple, a cookie or both, along with their normal meal.

Some days, the snacks were offered without cartoon stickers or other branding. On other days, either the cookie or the apple was branded with a familiar cartoon character.

When the snacks weren't specially marked, 91 percent of children took a cookie and just under one-quarter took an apple.

But when an Elmo sticker was slapped on the apples, 37 percent of children took fruit, the researchers reported.

Stickers on cookies didn't affect children's choice of the sweet snack.

"There are so many foods that are of poor nutritional quality and they are being marketed to children," said Christina Roberto, who studies food choices at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston and did not take part in the study.

Kid-friendly characters used for this marketing "aren't popping up on the carrots and apples as much as they are on a wide range of foods that aren't good for kids," she added.

Using stickers on fruits and vegetables could be one cheap option to help improve students' diets, she said, as well as something parents can try at home.

"It's not a bad idea to create these positive associations, especially if you're struggling to get kids to eat healthy foods," she added. SOURCE: http://bit.ly/Rzn7zT

Google: Software patents 'not helpful to the marketplace'

Notification bar patent

Addressing the attendees of the Technology Policy Institute's conference today in Mountain View, Calif., Google public policy director Pablo Chavez made it plain that as a company, Google is fed up with software patents, patent wars, and the way they affect the consumer. During the question and answer period, Chavez said,

We think that these patent wars are not helpful to consumers. They're not helpful to the marketplace. They're not helpful to innovation.

It's not the first time Google has spoken out against software patents. During the infamous Oracle v. Google trial, Google lawyer Kent Walker said that they are "gumming up the works of innovation," and in a joint petition to the U.S. Supreme court with Metlife, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley and others, Google said "The recent surge in patents on abstract ideas such as how to run a business or software that merely implements such methods has not promoted innovation in the financial services or information technology fields -- to the contrary, such patents create a drag on innovation."

It's plain to see that Google believes using patents and courtrooms to halt innovation or ban products as a bad idea. I couldn't agree more. Software patents are bad for business, bad for consumers, and bad for the industry as a whole. The small gains by winners of these suits is outweighed by the harm done, as small folks with big ideas can no longer implement them out of fear of litigation. If a company like Samsung or HTC can't stay out of court every time they move too much product, what chance do independent developers have?

This is the Google I like seeing. The one who stands up to the silly notion that ideas are property, and instead places value on the methods used to achieve those ideas. The Google who knows that hurting the consumer is never the best choice. We wish them the best in their campaign to reform the patent system in the U.S., as well as the abuse of it that some companies see as standard operating process. Not the Google who joins in the fray, then condemns the behavior three days later. Google is likely to find little sympathy after using Motorola's patents to go after Apple, then publicly saying they think companies doing such is a bad idea. Motorola is doing business as a separate company, but with Google as the common owner they are ultimately responsible, and should share the same patent philosophy.

We wish them the best in their campaign to reform the patent system in the U.S., as well as the abuse of it that some companies see as standard operating procedure.

Restaurant Review: Vino in the Valley

???? Nestled in a lush valley in Wisconsin, only about an hour?s drive from the Twin Cities (and well worth the drive) is a unique winery/restaurant open during the season on Thursdays through Sundays, offering not only unique Italian food and drink, but a sumptuous Sunday brunch.? The ambiance alone is worth the experience.?

???? Not only does Vino in the Valley offer their own wines ? you can walk between the vines as you walk the gorgeous grounds ? but they serve several other varietals of other vintners.? Plan for a long wait because the location is no longer a secret, but while you wait you can be entertained at outdoor umbrellaed tables, get a drink at the bar, play various games, or meander down to the Rush River which traverses the boundary of the grounds.? Live music by talented local musicians is provided, and a fully stocked gift house is ready to serve you or sell you some of your favorite wines.

??? The restaurant sits under a large (and I mean large) outdoor pavilion, and it reminded me of an Italian village festival where the entire community gathers, dressed informally, for a festive afternoon of food, song and merriment.? The service is quick and responsive, the food is wholesome and well prepared.? You sit there, surrounded by green hills and trees, with the river gurgling nearby, near the vineyard and a huge garden/farm where many of the vegetables are apparently grown, and soak it all up as you escape into a European-type experience..

???? Vino in the Valley caters parties and special occasions, has an OctoberFest, bonfires, hayrides, features local artisans, has sleigh rides over the holidays, and is the perfect atmosphere for an experience as they describe, ?Bella Sera,? a beautiful evening (or afternoon).? We enjoyed a captivating experience, and thought it was worth passing along.? www.vinointhevalley.com Maiden Rock, WI.? Manga and enjoy!

IconToggles adds system shortcuts right to your Home screen [jailbreak]

IconToggles adds system shortcuts right to your Home screen [jailbreak]

The best part of having a jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is the ability to access things like system settings quicker than you can stock. IconToggles adds beautiful system toggle icons straight to your Home screen for even quicker access than apps such as SBSettings offers.

After downloading IconToggles to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch there really isn't much to configure. You'll see 16 new icons added to your Home screen that give you quick access to commonly used functions. Obviously toggles such as call are only available on the iPhone but many of them will work on the iPad and iPod touch as well. You can nest the shortcuts into folders or leave them on your Home screen. I've gotten ones I don't use frequently tucked away in a folder while the ones I do use regularly right on the Home screen for easy access.

Currently IconToggles supports several actions including respring, reboot, new mail, new call, bluetooth, airplane mode, Wi-Fi, safe mode, location services, and more. The developer has also said that more will be added over time so if you've got a suggestion you can contact them on Twitter or via e-mail with your requests.

Inside the Settings app you can add a phone number for the new call feature to use. It seems the point of that specific toggle is more to call a favorite person and not quick access to the Phone app.

The one thing I'd like to see the developer add is a way to enable/disable toggles. I personally would never use some of them and don't feel the need to have the ones I won't use cluttering up my Home screen or the inside of a folder. Other than that it's a pretty elegant solution if you want quick one tap access to certain system settings.

IconToggles will work with any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 5 or higher and is available in Cydia now.

Michelle Obama to visit Sikh temple victims' family

First Lady Michelle Obama will visit relatives of the victims of the Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin on Thursday, a White House official said.

Police blame the August 5 shooting, which killed six people and wounded three, on Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old former US Army specialist.

Page, who killed himself with a gunshot wound to the head, was associated with neo-Nazi groups and the authorities are treating the incident as a case of domestic terrorism.

Obama will visit the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek to "meet with immediate family of victims and immediate family of the seriously injured," a White House official told AFP Saturday.

US investigators are yet to establish a motive for the killings, but they are looking into Page's links with white supremacist hate groups.

President Barack Obama has condemned the "senseless violence," which came just days after a July 20 shooting at a packed midnight premiere of the latest Batman movie that left 12 people dead and dozens wounded.

Health & Fitness: Self Improvement

Most people don?t realize it but motivation can be an integral part of staying healthy. How? If people are motivated to have a better life or live a life that is free from worry or sickness, they will be able to get the maximum of everything that their heart desires. For one to achieve this, he or she should have ?motivators?.

Motivators may refer people, things or even experiences that help a person get motivated and be inspired to achieve the goal or goals she or he has set for him or herself. For people who are aiming for a healthier and better life in general, here are some ways on how motivation itself can help you get by.

1. Find something that your heart really desires. This may refer to doing things that you really like or enjoy with or without another person involved. Experts say that it is advisable first to find something that will make you happy even if you are not with anybody. The best thing to get started with this is developing a healthy lifestyle on your own. You can do this by assessing in yourself what are the bad habits that are bad for your healthy such as vices like smoking or excessive drinking of alcohol, too much night life that gives you lesser sleep or eating unhealthy foods.

Once you were able to identify the bad habits for your health, you can try addressing each one at a time. It is very important not to force or pressure yourself in doing or stopping doing something that you are not ready to give up. Because if you do this, you will just run in cycles and circles-without really accomplishing anything at all.

2. Stay in a good company. Since no man is an island, it will be inevitable for you to feel the need to mingle with other people. But if you are really after your health, try to be around people who have healthy habits or those how have the same goals as you are. This is very important so you won?t be swayed when you see somebody doing the things that you know that are bad for your health.

If you are in a good company, you will be able to continue what you are doing and you can help or influence each other to stick to what you have started with. If you are in a company of people who are eyeing for the same goals are you are, you will easily get motivated to keep doing what you are doing until it becomes a part of your entire system.

3. List down your goals. If you want to stay healthy, it is best that you are always motivated to stay healthy. One of the best ways to do this is to list down the things that you want to achieve and set a goal for yourself. If you are eyeing for a healthier life, then you must list down all your bad habits. Once you have done that, set a time frame when you think you are ready to give up that bad habit. Of course, readiness is very important but it doesn?t mean that you have forever to do that.

You must know within yourself when you think you are ready to give that bad habit and give yourself a deadline. If you have a deadline, this will serve as a motivation for you to exert extra effort in achieving the goals you have set for your self.

Twitter Has Acquired Another Tiny Startup, Clutch.io - Business Insider

Twitter has sort-of acquired another startup, Clutch.io, which makes software tools for building iPhone and iPad apps.

We say "sort of" because here's what Clutch.io's Eric Florenzano and Eric Maguire wrote:

We are incredibly excited to announce that we?ve joined the flock at Twitter! Twitter has acquired the IP of Clutch.io and today is our first day with the company.

We asked Twitter to explain what that means. Here's what a company spokesperson said:

The Clutch.io team has joined Twitter and we acquired their IP.

Okay! So we're left trying to interpret that.

While it sounds like one event, those are actually legally two separate things. Intellectual property is an asset that one company can sell to another. And people who work at one company can get hired by another company.

Twitter, Facebook, Google, and others do a lot of deals that sound like acquisitions, but may or may not be actual transactions where one company purchases another. People call them talent acquisitions, acquire-hires, acqui-hires, or, even?manquisitions.

In Twitter's defense, we'd point out that the statement it provided is a vast improvement over past practice, when Twitter would actually call these transactions "talent acquisitions"?industry shorthand for something that legally can't really happen.

Whatever you call them, these deals usually involve some mechanism for paying off investors while getting what the acquiring company really wants?the talent that works there. Sometimes that's done through an actual acquisition of the company, albeit for a low price. Sometimes money is spent to acquire intellectual property. And sometimes the acquiring company pays the startup for agreeing not to sue for hiring away its employees.

A recent study by law professors at UNC shows that there are a number of reasons for companies to do these deals. But the biggest ones come down to reputation. It's more prestigious to say you sold your startup to a big company than to say you're closing your startup down and taking a corporate job.

And if you get to say that the acquiring company bought your startup's intellectual property, that sounds even better. (It may or may not actually get used by the acquirer. Clutch.io is shutting down its service later this year.)

Florenzano and Maguire started working on Clutch.io earlier this year under the umbrella of their startup Boilerplate. They previously cofounded Convore, a group-messaging startup which shut down earlier this year.

ChemCam sends digital ?thumbs up?: Martian landing area could be a boon for scientific study

ScienceDaily (Aug. 9, 2012) ? Members of the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover ChemCam team got a digital thumbs up about the operational readiness of their instrument just hours after the rover landed on Martian soil late Sunday evening.

Los Alamos National Laboratory planetary scientist Roger Wiens, Principal Investigator of the ChemCam Team, confirmed that the instrument sent word to its handlers on Earth that it was alive and healthy.

"Following the fantastic landing of Curiosity on Mars, ChemCam proceeded with an aliveness test within an hour of landing," Wiens announced. "This was essentially the same routine as performed five months earlier in the middle of its cruise (to Mars). We are giving the all-clear from our perspective to raise the (rover) mast on Sol 2. All systems are go!"

The aliveness check means that, as far as the international team of scientists is concerned, ChemCam can begin its next task of transmitting photographic images of the rover as a system check.

The ChemCam instrument combines a high-resolution camera powerful enough to view a human hair from seven feet away with a high-power laser that can zap rocks from a distance of as much as 23 feet to determine their composition. If everything goes according to plan, ChemCam could fire its first laser pulses at a Martian rock on Sol 10 or 11 (August 18 or 19).

Because Curiosity's mission is scheduled to last an entire Martian year, or 98 Earth weeks, the MSL science team -- composed of members from each of the rover's 10 instruments -- is proceeding slowly at first to ensure that the vehicle is ready and able to make its slow road trip on a geological sightseeing trip through Gale crater and the slopes of Mount Sharp.

The rover seems to have landed in a good spot within the crater, Wiens said.

"The idea is that the gravel we're seeing is alluvium coming down from the rim of the crater," he said. "The alluvium from the rim is potentially more ancient than Mount Sharp," which some have suggested holds a billion years or more of Martian geological history within its strata.

Some members of the ChemCam team see the alluvial pebbles as a unique, drive-by study opportunity. Los Alamos post-doctoral researcher Nina Lanza, has previously studied rock varnish on Earth rocks. The dark varnish appears on rocks in arid locations like the desert southwest. The weathered coating, while extremely thin, may provide clues about whether Mars once harbored ancient life.

"Rock varnish on Earth is not clearly understood," Lanza said. "It's not yet certain whether a biological component is necessary for its formation."

The ability to study extraterrestrial rock varnish, if no indications of bacterial life are present on Mars, could help scientists better understand terrestrial processes by which these varnishes form on rock, or varnishes could serve as a possible confirmatory test that life was once present at locations beyond Earth and Mars.

ChemCam's tiny bursts of laser energy can gently vaporize the coating bits at a time until it reaches the pristine rock below. The data from ChemCam's laser and spectrometer can probe the makeup of rock varnish, or indicate to researchers whether the varnish is contaminated with layers of material from other weather-related geological processes.

"ChemCam is the perfect instrument to see these types of subtle chemistry changes through the surface of rocks," Lanza said.

Throughout the Curiosity rover's mission, ChemCam has the ability to sample thousands of locations on Mars. The instrument is a collaboration between research organizations within the United States and France. More than 45 LANL scientists, students and other personnel comprise the entire ChemCam team.

Ask A Lesbian | Thought Catalog

These questions have been submitted to me from friends over the past year ? questions that they were afraid to ask any other person in the LGBTQ spectrum until I came along. My name is Alison, I am a queer woman living in Denver, and I want you to ask me the questions you?re afraid to ask: the dirtier, more disgusting, or just plain weird, the better!

What?s it like to make the switch from opposite to same sex?

This is a common question, surprisingly. And guess what? You?re not going to hurt any lesbian?s feelings by asking this. You may get the response ? ?I?ve never been with a member of the opposite sex, actually,? and then you can high five that lady and give her a pat on the back. Or the ass. She is a rarity ? a ?gold star lesbian.? A gold star lesbian is hard to find! And when you do find her, she?ll be the one telling you that you?re a beautiful, delicate flower that is gorgeous even when you?re bloated from your period because hey ? you?re a woman, and that?s goddamn beautiful. For the rest of us screw-ups, there?s a shift that happens.

For me, that shift happened organically. I dated men, was engaged to a man, dated some more men, and just went through life thinking everyone was having sex that made them feel average and then they lied about it to their friends in a Carrie-esque, Sex-and-the-City-told-me-this-is-what-you-do sort of way. I then fell in love with a woman and realized that (for me) I was doing it all wrong! The men were supposed to be my friends, and the women were supposed to be my partners!

But, being with a woman didn?t immediately bring me to that conclusion. It took me a few months to use the term ?lesbian,? and though I use it interchangeably with ?queer,? I had trouble with it. I didn?t understand how I could go from physically being with a man to a woman a) with such ease and b) for the rest of my life. But, as things do, it took time to learn to be true. Just as you learn to ride a bike or make a favorite dish, it might take a few tries and some practice. Everything was natural in my switch, but that doesn?t make it any less weird!

My changeover from men to women came with the love and support of friends near me and most of my family far away. And though some people aren?t okay with it, the switch from being with men to being with women could actually be changed to switching from what felt wrong to what felt right, or the change of what my mind was taught versus what my heart needed.

How can I support a friend that?s just come out?

First off, hurray! I would say excuse yourself to the restroom and do a little dance! This person has just trusted you with the most important information in their world, and they want you to join in on this journey. You are a great friend! Shake your little booty, kiss yourself in the mirror, compose yourself, and walk back out to them. Don?t dance too long ? you don?t want them to think you?re in the phone calling every Tara, Rita, and Harriet you know!

Now, sit back down at the table/bar/floor/wherever you are, look that person in the eye, and thank them. Thank them for involving you in their personal life in such an enormous way! For someone to tell you that they?re gay/bi/trans/whatever they identify as is huge!

Next, let them talk. Ask them open-ended questions that are meaningful ? ?When did you know?? ?What helped you come to this decision?? Let them talk. Chances are they?ve only had themselves and their cat to talk to, so they might need to get some stuff out. And since you?ve thanked them and let them know that it?s a safe space for them to talk to you, they?ll probably be as open and honest as you want them to be.

Next, ask them what you can do to support them on their journey. Think of that cheesy ?Footprints? poem you see posted in churches, nursing homes, and other slightly depressing places. They may need you to walk alongside them, and they may need you to carry them at times. Coming out is rarely an easy process, but they?ve selected you for that journey, so be ready to swim against the school of fish you travel with sometimes.

Lastly, after you?ve shared tears, shots of whiskey, hugs, ?ohh-my-GAWD!?s and the like, stand up and hug them. Remind them of your support. Go home, buy a rainbow flag, and become the ally you were born to be! Congratulations ? you have joined my LGBTQ family, you sweet baby angel.

What do the LGBTQAIPS? well, really, what do all the letters REALLY mean? Am I saying it right? Whose feelings am I hurting by just saying ?gay??

There are SO many letters added to the ?spectrum? of sexuality, and those can be hard for those to grasp if they?re outside of the community. Hell, sometimes it?s hard for me to grasp and I?m boobs deep in it. Let?s have a brief history session, shall we?

LGB (lesbian, gay, bisexual) was the first abbreviation used by the gay community in the 80s, meant to replace, well, the ?gay community? as a term. The lesbians and bisexuals were feeling like they weren?t encompassed. In the later 80s, T (transgender) joined the club, and the mid-90s brought the resurgence of the letter Q (queer), which for many is reclamation of the word, seen as all-encompassing of the LGBT community. Q can also include questioning.

As for the other letters, they have joined the club fairly recently. A stands for both asexual and ally ? someone who doesn?t have sexual attraction to anyone and someone who will stand with you no matter what your sexual orientation is.

I stands for intersex ? someone with the non-presence to distinguish themselves from female to male or vice versa. This includes both physical and psychological identification.

P stands for pansexual ? someone who is gender-blind in their love and has sexual and emotional attraction to all people. It differs from bisexual in that it includes those who may not identify in a gender, or someone who identifies with both genders.

S stands for straight. Plain and simple, y?all.

I wanted to answer this question for someone who has started referring to my crew as ?alphabet group.? I personally say ?LGBTQ,? refer to myself as a lesbian or queer, and accept all of the other forms as totally cool in my book. I don?t say anything past Q not to be non-inclusive, but frankly those truly are a lot of damn letters to say. I have friends who identify in nearly all of those categories, and I love and respect them for who they are.

I consider myself a down to earth human who?s not going to get hung up on you just calling me ?gay,? and most people in the spectrum will probably feel the same way. Most people aren?t out to offend others on the regular. What wouldn?t hurt anyone?s feelings is asking them what they prefer to identify as. I know a woman who does all actions of a lesbian, but prefers to be called queer. I know of a pansexual woman who prefers to date girly girls and manly men, therefore could fit under the spectrum of bisexual, but if her preference is to be pansexual, then she is pansexual. I?m positive you won?t offend a person in the spectrum if you ask, so do it!

It seems like most of those in the gay community seem to start with the physical relationship and then move into more of the other parts. Maybe this is more true for gay men than women (as I have experienced with having some male gay friends). So, why does it seem like that is the first part of the relationship?

This is a good one. I have to say, from my experience, that it really comes down to emotions. I was once engaged to a man. I have been with other men as well. Other than one relationship, they didn?t start with sex. They started with dates ? hanging out, getting to know each other. There?s a trust that needs to be built, and I?ve found that between opposite sexes, that trust takes a while to build. Even if you?re the most in love that you?ve ever been and you feel like you knew that person inside and out after the first date, there?s still a little barrier that needs to be climbed and/or broken down. It?s only natural: men and women don?t always understand each other.

You?ve heard the saying before: men are from Mars, women are from Venus. We?re differently aligned humans, and we don?t always know what the other person wants. Men can be more closed off, like rocks, and not as open with their emotions; women are sometimes crying, emotional wrecks (please read with sarcasm). But in truth, men don?t often wear their emotions on their sleeves like women do. But! In same-sex relationships, all bets are off. I?ve learned from my first relationship that I can be extremely open and honest, because my wonderful girlfriend is also a woman and can read into when I say ?everything?s fine.? She is well aware of my emotions because as a chromosomal similarity, she knows what I?m trying to say. Now, this of course can be learned with time in a male/female relationship, but it comes more naturally in same-sex relationships.

Let me share a story with you: I have two friends (well, more than that, but for the sake of the story? two). We?ll call them A and B. Both of these women were previously in relationships. They met at a party I threw. The night they met, there was flirting. The next night was a date. The next night, they had slept together. When A woke up the next day, it just so happened that she was leaving the state permanently. B was heartbroken and cried. I?m pretty sure they now have Skype sex and are really, really into each other. All just after three days of knowing each other.

Women. We are emotional, open creatures and we know what we want (even if we don?t always say it). So when two women enter a relationship together, it?s usually a firestorm of ?yes? and ?I want you? and the like. I can only assume the natural aggressor in men is the same, which may be your experience with gay men entering sexual relationships early on as well. This being said, when the relationship ends, hold on to your hats, because the lid will be blown off in a major way. You rarely hear about lovely, amicable splits in the LGTBQ community. I had a coworker who had his hair torn out when he left his lover. Drama to the max. But, it?s because all of these heavy, thick emotions are mixed together, and it takes time to untangle and separate them. That?s also the beauty of same-sex relationships: you see a lot of exes brunching together with their new significant others, because once the knots of the past are untangled, they are forever separated. I have heard more LGBTQ people say that they shared a past with this person, so why would they want to hate them if the relationship ended on good terms (aka not because of cheating, etc)? Emotions ride the waves of homosexual relationships, which I believe is why sex is so tied into that. I?m also pretty sure it?s why the sex is so good, but maybe that?s just my assumption. TC mark
