Iranian warships dock in Sudan after alleged Israeli airstrikes

Sudan?s links to Iran came under scrutiny Tuesday as it welcomed two Iranian warships less than a week after an explosion at a Khartoum weapons warehouse that Sudanese officials blamed on an Israeli airstrike.

Unconfirmed reports in Israel suggested that the arms factory was either storing or manufacturing weapons on behalf of Iran. Sudan has in the past denied that it allows Iranian weapons to be shipped through its territory to Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Sudan's information minister, Ahmed Belal Osman, last week accused Israel of carrying out an airborne attack on the facility. An explosion at Yarmouk, outside Khartoum, on Oct. 24 left extensive damage. Sudan has complained to the United Nations over the strike. Israel has refused to comment.

Think you know Africa? Take our geography quiz.

The arrival of the Iranian Navy?s helicopter carrier Kharg and its destroyer Admiral Shahid Naqdi on Sudan?s Red Sea coast late Monday raised questions over strengthening relations between Khartoum and Tehran.

?They?re saying it?s pure coincidence, that [the visit] has been planned for weeks, and has nothing to do with the factory explosion last week,? says one Westerner in Sudan, who asked not to be identified. ?Maybe so, but it?s pretty clumsy timing and really raises the heat on both Khartoum and the Iranians over these alleged arms deals and links to Gaza and Hezbollah.?

The warships? visit was a chance to ?support strong political, security and diplomatic relations? between Sudan and Iran, Sawarmi Khaled Saad, a Sudanese army spokesman, told the country?s official SUNA news agency Monday.

It would allow Sudanese officials to study ?advanced weapons and advanced ships,? he added.

The two vessels have been based in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea since September, as part of Iran?s involvement in international naval efforts to beat Somali piracy. An Iranian vessel was hijacked in 2008.

Their visit to Sudan would ?convey Iran's message of peace to the regional countries and maintain the security of shipping corridors against maritime terrorism,? Press TV, an Iranian state-owned broadcaster, reported.

The government in Khartoum Monday issued a terse statement denying that there was any agreement for Sudan to assemble or store arms for Iran.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms what is known by all: that Iran has no need to manufacture weapons in Sudan, for Iran or for its allies," the ministry said in a statement. "We want to deny any relation between Sudan's military manufacturing and any foreign partner."

Israel has in the past accused Sudan of allowing Iran to transport weapons to militant groups in the Middle East via its territory. The arms are then allegedly smuggled through Egypt to Gaza or on to Lebanon.

Sudan, whose president Omar al-Bashir is known to be close to Iran?s leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has twice accused Israel of carrying out airstrikes inside his country.

A convoy of vehicles traveling towards Sudan?s border with Egypt was destroyed by unknown aircraft in January 2009, and a single SUV was hit in Port Sudan last year.

It was reported in 2009 that the convoy included Iranian weapons, including anti-tank rockets, that were being shipped to Hamas in Gaza. Tehran and Khartoum have both denied this.

The two Iranian warships were due to leave port on Wednesday and continue patrols in the Red Sea, Sudanese officials said.

Wealthy Donated Less but Volunteered More in 2011 - NYTimes.com

The ?1 percent? have taken some lumps over the last year or so. But despite a dip in overall philanthropic giving, the majority of the wealthy donated a consistent proportion of their income to charity last year, a new study finds.

Ninety-five percent of wealthy households donated to charity last year, according to the 2012 Bank of America Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy. That is down from 98 percent in 2009, in a previous version of the study. (About 65 percent of the general population of United States households donate to charity, the study said.)

But the wealthy still gave roughly 9 percent of their incomes ? about the same level as in 2009, the study found. Given the recent recession, that level of giving shows an ?extraordinary? commitment to philanthropy, said Claire Costello, philanthropic practice executive for U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management. The average dollar amount given per household fell 7 percent, to $52,770 from $56,621, adjusted for inflation.

The study also showed an uptick in volunteering among the wealthy, suggesting that the affluent may have compensated for lower dollar donations by giving more of their time. In 2011, 89 percent of wealthy individuals volunteered with nonprofits, up from 79 percent in 2009.

The study was done in partnership with the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. The results are based on a nationwide sample of 700 households with net worths of $1 million or more, excluding the value of their homes, or annual household incomes of $200,000 or more.

About a quarter of wealthy households plan to increase their giving over the next three to five years, and about half said they planned to give at the same level, the study found.

How much of your income do you donate to charity?

Routine electrocardiograms predict health risks for patients with atrial fibrillation

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Canadian scientists have determined that routine electrocardiogram (ECG) results for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) -- the most common form of irregular heart beat -- can help doctors identify those at higher risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes, including death. This knowledge will help doctors improve the treatment and prognosis of atrial fibrillation.

Through a retrospective analysis of thousands of patient files, researchers at the Montreal Heart Institute and the University of Calgary learned that a routine 12-lead surface ECG -- in which 12 different electrical signals are recorded -- conducted at the time of AF diagnosis is an accurate predictor of later adverse events.

Research presented October 28 at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress found that patients with AF do not all face the same risks for disease; determining the extent to which any individual patient is at risk of adverse events has been a challenge for doctors, until now.

"The ECG has recently received resurging attention due to its simplicity, relatively cheap cost and near universal availability," says Dr. Jason Andrade, cardiologist at the Montreal Heart Institute. "This knowledge, combined with the recognition that all patients with AF will receive an ECG as part of their diagnostic work-up, makes it highly useful as a method for assessing risk."

ECG is used to measure the rate and regularity of heartbeats, as well as the size and position of the chambers, the presence of any damage to the heart and the effects of drugs or devices used to regulate the heart, such as a pacemaker

Researchers found that the strongest indicators of risk were prolonged QRS duration and prolonged PR and QT intervals, each of which is a measure of electrical waves that regulate heart rhythm.

For example, a prolonged QRS duration is associated with an increased risk of multiple adverse cardiovascular outcomes including death and hospitalization.

An increased PR interval is associated with cardiovascular death and sudden cardiac death. A prolonged corrected QT interval is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular hospitalization and sudden arrhythmic death in men.

Dr. Andrade noted that the research team was "somewhat surprised at the strength of the relationship between the identified ECG predictors and the adverse cardiovascular outcomes."

Their data analysis showed that a prolonged QRS duration was associated with a 40 per cent increased risk for all-cause mortality, a 50 to 60 per cent increased risk for cardiovascular mortality and a 90 to 120 per cent increased risk for sudden cardiac death.

It is estimated that 350,000 Canadians live with AF, and that rate is likely climbing as the population ages. Those with AF are three to five times more likely to suffer a stroke, the majority of which are disabling and are more likely to be fatal. However, prevention is effective at reducing the risks associated with AF.

Atrial fibrillation (AF), a type of irregular heart rhythm known as an arrhythmia, can cause the heart to beat very fast, sometimes more than 150 beats per minute. While it is rare in people under 40, its prevalence increases with age.

"Knowing that the risk of developing AF increases with age and with other risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure and underlying heart disease, it is important to take action by following a healthy lifestyle to start reducing your risk," says Heart and Stroke Foundation spokesperson Dr. Beth Abramson. "Your risk for developing many diseases can be reduced if your diet is lower in sodium, saturated and trans fats and includes plenty of vegetables, fruit and whole grains."

She says that if you have a tendency to high blood pressure -- which is associated with AF -- then regular activity, watching salt in your diet and maintaining a healthy body weight are especially important preventive measures.

Dr. Abramson also recommends being tobacco-free, limiting alcohol intake and reducing stress as much as possible. "Any lifestyle changes that lower blood pressure may reduce your chances of developing AF," she adds.

Futurity.org ? Don't believe what you hear about black cats

"Previous research supports the existence of 'black cat' syndrome, where black and brown cats are less likely to be adopted than cats of other colors," researcher Mikel Delgado says. "We were interested in whether people's perceptions of the interaction between personality and coat color might play a part." (Credit: Jessica/Flickr)

UC BERKELEY (US) ? Stereotypes about kitty colors?black cats are bad luck?can have a negative effect on adoption rates at animal shelters, research shows.

?To date there is little evidence that these perceived differences between differently colored cats actually exist, but there are serious repercussions for cats if people believe that some colors are friendlier than others,? says Mikel Delgado, lead author of the study published in the journal Anthrozoos and a doctoral student in psychology at the University of California, Berkeley.

?We hope that this study will be a starting point for further research in what qualities affect adoption and retention of pet cats, and whether there is a genetic or physical basis (such as coat color) for personality differences in cats,? she adds.

Of an estimated 100 million domesticated cats in the United States, at least one million end up in shelters each year. Many are abandoned because their personalities conflict with their owners? expectations.

A 2002 study from UC Davis found that one in four cats are brought to shelters because they did not get along with their owners or other household pets. A common complaint is that they?re, ?too active.? That study also found that dark cats are more likely to be euthanized, and that tortoiseshell cats are frequently typecast as having too much attitude or ?tortitude?.

?Previous research supports the existence of ?black cat? syndrome, where black and brown cats are less likely to be adopted than cats of other colors,? Delgado says. ?We were interested in whether people?s perceptions of the interaction between personality and coat color might play a part.?

To establish a link between how cat color influences adoption rates, Delgado and her co-authors used Craigslist to recruit a national sample of cat owners and cat lovers in large US metropolitan areas.

Participants were asked to rate, on a scale of 1 to 7, the personalities of black, white, bi-colored, tri-colored (tortoiseshell or calico), and orange cats based on their tendencies to be active, aloof, bold, calm, friendly, intolerant, shy, stubborn, tolerant, and trainable.

While most people surveyed said personality informs their decision about which cat to adopt, the characteristics they ascribed to cats based on their coat color indicated that color consciously or unconsciously played a key role in their final choice of which kitty to take home.

Overall, orange cats and bi-colored cats were characterized as friendly, while black cats, white cats, and tri-colored cats were regarded as more antisocial.

White cats were considered to be more shy, lazy and calm, while tortoiseshell cats more depicted as both more intolerant and more trainable. Black cats were typified as having less extreme character traits, which might contribute to their mysterious reputation.

At the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society (BEBHS), cat coordinator Cathy Marden is all too familiar with the psychology involved in pet adoptions. Staff members and volunteers there try to break down stereotypes at every opportunity, she says, and descriptions of each cat written on the adoption rooms cages highlight the individual?s characteristics.

?You can?t judge a cat by its color,? she adds. ?If someone comes in to adopt, we encourage them to spend time with all the cats, because it?s the personality of that cat?not the color?that will let you know if the animal?s the right fit for you.?

Still, reactions to black cats can be so strong, she says, that few adoptions take place at the shelter when there are more than a few black cats in the adoption room. ?It?s a huge bummer,? adds Marden, who has blogged on the BEBHS website about the ?Top 10 Reasons to Adopt a Black Cat? and about the joys of adopting a monochromatic cat.

Domestic cats are believed to be descended from African wild cats and have coexisted peacefully with humans for 4,000 years. Through literature, movies and other cultural channels, cats have long been characterized as solitary, independent species who are ?tolerant of affection only when it suits their needs,? according to the study.

That said, cats have adapted well to a variety of living conditions, and this has made them successful at cohabiting with humans, the study points out.

Other coauthors of the study are Jacqueline Munera at the New College of Florida and Gretchen Reevy at the California State University, East Bay.

Stocks climb, breaking out of a weeklong slump

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks climbed Thursday on Wall Street, aiming for their first significant advance in more than a week, on the busiest day for quarterly corporate earnings reports.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 30 points at 13,108 as of 11:15 a.m. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up five points at 1,413 and the Nasdaq composite index was up 10 at 2,991.

The gains were broad. Eight of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 index rose.

The Dow gained 127 points Oct. 16 but since then has managed only two daily gains, both of them meager. The average has lost 474 points since that last significant increase. Investors have focused on weaker corporate revenue and pessimistic projections.

Among companies reporting earnings Thursday, Procter & Gamble led the Dow Jones industrial average higher after the giant consumer products company reported earnings that beat analysts' expectations. P&G rose $2.55 to $70.63.

Online game maker Zynga jumped 26 cents to $2.39 after the company reported revenue that was stronger than analysts had anticipated. The company also said it would cut costs and enter the gambling business.

Health insurer Aetna rose 52 cents to $44.47 after reporting a 2 percent gain in third-quarter earnings. Higher revenue and lower-than-expected health care claims helped the company beat Wall Street's profit expectations.

Homebuilders fell broadly after the pace of growth in pending home sales slowed last month. PulteGroup, which returned to profitability in the third quarter, gave up an early gain and was trading down 55 cents at $16.90.

Profits at United Airlines declined with fewer people flying, and the company fell well short of Wall Street expectations. The stock fell 36 cents to $19.91.

Apple and Amazon.com report earnings after the market closes.

European and Asian markets were mixed. The price of crude oil edged down 3 cents to $85.70 per barrel in New York after a week of heavy selling.

As investors moved into stocks, they sold U.S. government bonds, sending yields higher. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note yielded 1.82 percent, up from 1.79 percent late Wednesday.

Planet found in nearest star system to Earth

Thursday, October 18, 2012

European astronomers have discovered a planet with about the mass of the Earth orbiting a star in the Alpha Centauri system ? the nearest to Earth. It is also the lightest exoplanet ever discovered around a star like the Sun. The planet was detected using the HARPS instrument on the 3.6-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile. The results will appear online in the journal Nature on 17 October 2012.

Alpha Centauri is one of the brightest stars in the southern skies and is the nearest stellar system to our Solar System -- only 4.3 light-years away. It is actually a triple star -- a system consisting of two stars similar to the Sun orbiting close to each other, designated Alpha Centauri A and B, and a more distant and faint red component known as Proxima Centauri. Since the nineteenth century astronomers have speculated about planets orbiting these bodies, the closest possible abodes for life beyond the Solar System, but searches of increasing precision had revealed nothing. Until now.

"Our observations extended over more than four years using the HARPS instrument and have revealed a tiny, but real, signal from a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri B every 3.2 days," says Xavier Dumusque (Geneva Observatory, Switzerland and Centro de Astrofisica da Universidade do Porto, Portugal), lead author of the paper. "It's an extraordinary discovery and it has pushed our technique to the limit!"

The European team detected the planet by picking up the tiny wobbles in the motion of the star Alpha Centauri B created by the gravitational pull of the orbiting planet. The effect is minute -- it causes the star to move back and forth by no more than 51 centimetres per second (1.8 km/hour), about the speed of a baby crawling. This is the highest precision ever achieved using this method.

Alpha Centauri B is very similar to the Sun but slightly smaller and less bright. The newly discovered planet, with a mass of a little more than that of the Earth, is orbiting about six million kilometres away from the star, much closer than Mercury is to the Sun in the Solar System. The orbit of the other bright component of the double star, Alpha Centauri A, keeps it hundreds of times further away, but it would still be a very brilliant object in the planet's skies.

The first exoplanet around a Sun-like star was found by the same team back in 1995 and since then there have been more than 800 confirmed discoveries, but most are much bigger than the Earth, and many are as big as Jupiter. The challenge astronomers now face is to detect and characterise a planet of mass comparable to the Earth that is orbiting in the habitable zone around another star. The first step has now been taken.

"This is the first planet with a mass similar to Earth ever found around a star like the Sun. Its orbit is very close to its star and it must be much too hot for life as we know it," adds Stephane Udry (Geneva Observatory), a co-author of the paper and member of the team, "but it may well be just one planet in a system of several. Our other HARPS results, and new findings from Kepler, both show clearly that the majority of low-mass planets are found in such systems."

"This result represents a major step towards the detection of a twin Earth in the immediate vicinity of the Sun. We live in exciting times!" concludes Xavier Dumusque.

Tempest in a tea bottle for school district - The Orange County Register

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District will re-examine its disciplinary practices, and its hard-line policy against alcohol, after an 11-year-old student brought to school a bottle of kombucha tea containing a tiny amount of alcohol.

The boy, a seventh grader at Ensign Intermediate School in Newport Beach, originally got in hot water for having a glass bottle in his lunchbox on Tuesday, Oct. 9. School officials noticed that the label on the bottle of fermented tea said it contained less than 0.5 percent alcohol by volume. District policy states that anyone who possesses products with even trace amounts of alcohol could be subject to discipline.

Here are three of the seven flavors of Bucha-brand kombucha tea. The one on the left, guava mango, is the flavor an 11-year-old boy at a Newport Beach intermediate school drank last week, igniting a debate about natural foods and school policy.

According to a district spokeswoman, the boy was questioned by the vice principal the next day, with a school resource officer from the Newport Beach Police Department present. The boy was told that the consequences of possessing alcohol could include a referral to a program to treat youth substance abuse. The vice principal initially recommended a five-day suspension, but officials later decided against any such punishment.

"There hasn't been time to change policies at this point," district spokeswoman Laura Boss said by e-mail. "However, the discussions have begun as to how we can work to develop a more nurturing approach when dealing with issues regarding discipline that don't fit the standard 'black and white' drug and alcohol issues."

The boy was kept out of class the rest of the school day Wednesday and studied in an administrative office as school officials tried to reach his mother. The mother met with the vice principal, Mary Jo Vecchiarelli, later that day, but it didn't go well. "My meeting with her made me feel, ridiculous, confused, outraged, ridiculed and blamed," the mother wrote on her own blog, called Fresh and Free in OC.

The mother could not be reached for comment, and on her blog she refers to herself only as Leslie G. Neither she nor the district has identified her son.

Kombucha (pronounced "kom-BOO-cha") is made by combining live bacteria with yeast in sweetened tea. Some devotees of the 2,200-year-old beverage say it has a range of therapeutic benefits, from aiding in digestion and building immunity against diseases to preventing cancer and stopping baldness, although there's little modern scientific evidence to support the claims. Other fans simply like the carbonated taste and drink it as an alternative to sodas and juices.

However, ethyl alcohol is a natural by-product of the fermenting process. Any drink that has less than 0.5 percent alcohol is not classified by the federal government as an alcoholic beverage, so anyone under 21 can buy it. The alcohol content is so low it won't cause drunkenness; by comparison, a can of domestic beer is 4 percent ABV. Home brews of kombucha often produce higher concentrations of alcohol, and some companies have created 21-and-over versions whose content runs between 1 and 3 percent.

Commercially bottled kombuchas for sale to the general public are labeled as having less than 0.5 percent alcohol. But in June 2010 a problem was revealed when Whole Foods announced that several popular brands of kombucha had been voluntarily pulled from store shelves after some samples were found to have alcohol levels ranging from over 0.5 percent to 2.5 percent.

The beverage-makers that survived the withdrawal reformulated their products, and now, two years later, kombucha is gaining momentum again. GT's of Beverly Hills dominates the U.S. market, with its Enlightened Kombucha and Enlightened Synergy drinks. The brand Leslie G. packed for her son was Bucha Live Kombucha, made by B&R Liquid Adventure LLC of Torrance. The company's website states the drink has less than 0.5 percent alcohol, and the particular flavor Leslie G's son drank, Guava Mango, usually has much less ? 0.22 percent, said founder Bern Galvin.

"That's next to nothing," Galvin said.

On her blog, Leslie G said her son has attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and that this had contributed to past behavioral problems at school. She said her family's healthier diet, which included kombucha, has had a positive effect on him. "He LOVES our new lifestyle. He LOVES Kombucha. He LOVES educating the other students on the detriments of processed food and sugar," she wrote.

After the unsatisfactory meeting with the vice principal, Leslie G took her story to Sarah Pope, who writes the Healthy Home Economist blog. Pope's blog post last Friday unleashed her army of readers. It has generated 19,000 Facebook "shares," and nearly 400 comments on the post alone, many of them brimming with outrage for the school administrators and their tactics. On Friday, Leslie met with Principal Gloria Duncan, who "determined no discipline was necessary despite the violation of the policy," said Boss, the district spokeswoman. The district also posted a statement on its website noting that the student had not been suspended.

Leslie wrote on her blog that Duncan was "very nice and receptive," but that she "held firm" to the zero-tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol. "It really made me look into home schooling, but I don't want to further make my son feel bad," Leslie wrote.

Boss said in an e-mail that school administrators had never encountered kombucha before, and although it technically violated policy, "unfortunately, during the routine discovery process, the incident escalated and a reasonable reaction by the school site administration got out of hand and was misunderstood."

She said kombucha itself won't be banned from campuses in the district. "However, the current district policy remains that products containing any traces of alcohol on campus may be subject to the discipline policy.

"This is an area that needs to be more closely reviewed."

PPP: Obama Weathers Post-Debate Fallout, Leads Ohio By 5

Although President Barack Obama has seen solid leads evaporate in the last week, a poll released Saturday night suggests Ohio continues to look like a firewall for his campaign.

The latest survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling (PPP) shows Obama leading Mitt Romney among likely Ohio voters 51 percent to 46 percent. That's little change from PPP's pre-debate poll of Ohio two weeks ago, which showed Obama up 4.

The PollTracker Average currently shows Obama holding a small lead over Romney in Ohio, 47.5 percent to 45.2 percent.

Obama has outperformed Romney in Ohio throughout this campaign. By the end of September it looked like the president was poised to walk away with the Buckeye State's 18 electoral votes. But a successful outing in the first presidential debate breathed new life into Romney's campaign, and the Republican nominee has subsequently either narrowed or erased Obama's leads both nationwide and in swing states.

Saturday's poll offered plenty of explanations for Obama's durability in Ohio. For one, the president's resilience there could be a testament to his robust field operation: the Obama team claims more campaign offices statewide than Romney by a roughly 3-to-1 ratio. The fruits of Obama's ground game may be discernible in the poll: among the nearly 20 percent of Ohioans who said that they have already voted, 76 percent of them cast their ballots for the president. Romney, on the other hand, leads Obama among those who have not voted yet, 51 percent to 45 percent.

What's more, PPP's findings underscore what's been so paramount to the president's standing both in Ohio and in neighboring states. Fifty-four percent of Ohio voters said they support the bailout of the U.S. automotive industry, long a significant source of support for Obama throughout the Rust Belt, while 37 percent said they remain opposed. On the question of which candidate would be better for the auto industry, 50 percent of Ohio voters gave the nod to Obama compared with 43 percent who said Romney. And a majority of Ohio voters, 51 percent, said they trust Obama more on the economy, while 46 percent said they preferred Romney.

Obama's approval rating has improved since PPP's Ohio poll in late-September, which showed a narrow plurality of the state's voters disapproving of his job as president. In Saturday's poll, 50 percent of Ohio voters said they approve of Obama's job performance, while 48 percent said they disapprove. Romney's own personal standing has gotten slightly worse: 51 percent of voters there have an unfavorable view of the former Massachusetts governor, up from 49 percent in September.

While Romney's surge in many polls this week showed a narrowing of the gender gap, PPP's latest survey found Obama widening his lead among Ohio women. The president leads by 12 among female voters in the state, a big bump from his slim 2-point edge late last month.

PPP did not survey Ohio last weekend, so it is unclear what immediate damage Obama incurred there for his flat performance in the Oct. 3 presidential debate. But it's possible the president was at least partly redeemed by his running mate: 46 percent of Ohio voters said Vice President Joe Biden was the winner of Thursday night's vice presidential debate, while 37 percent gave the edge to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI).

PPP conducted its survey Oct. 12-13 using automated interviews with 880 likely Ohio voters. The poll has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.

Self Improvement 101: The Very Best Tips And Tricks - Articles.org ...

At times, it can be difficult to determine what you need for effective self improvement. Personal development is just that- personal. That means what is required to improve will vary between different people. When you take this into consideration you will learn that it?s important to search for new tips regularly. This article will present you with a few to get your started.

If you are battling depression, it may be helpful to adjust your diet by increasing your intake of complex carbohydrates. A lack of complex carbs can lead to a shortage of serotonin, a significant factor in depression. A good way to increase your intake is by adding whole grains, beans, brown rice, nuts, fresh fruits and raw veggies to your diet.

Start contributing to an emergency fund. It is not good to pile up credit card bills when an unexpected emergency pops up. This makes you even less capable of dealing with an emergency in the future. Putting a few dollars a week into an emergency fund will add up over time. That fund can help us both in the short term and in the long term as our debt decreases instead of grows.

Eliminate any disorganization in your life. Organization will make you feel good about yourself, and make you feel confident. You will also help relieve stress that is caused by disorganization. Having everything put away and neatly organized can give you a sense of peace.

Try talking to the pastor at your church, or a therapist; it can help. Not only have they been trained to deal in personal growth, their experience in these issues is what makes them a good choice to speak with. These impartial listeners can provide a sympathetic ear or help you deal with troublesome areas of your life. Discussing your problems in a safe environment with a licensed professional, can really make all the difference and leave you feeling much better.

Get to know what habits successful people have, and then incorporate them in your lifestyle. Start with a couple habits and then practice them until they?re permanent parts of your life. Be patient because it takes time to develop a new habit.

Scrutinize your heart, soul and mind rather than being engrossed with your physical appearance. It really does not matter what expensive clothing you wear, or if you look like someone from a magazine shoot. In the end, your disposition and attitude will be your defining features. Instead of making cosmetic changes, put more effort into improving your inner self.

You can benefit by learning about other individuals who are a success. You can avoid both personal and business mistakes by knowing the trials that others have faced. Reading about positive experiences others have had, as well as lessons learned, can really enhance your self improvement.

You must have a positive attitude in order to grow as an individual. Bad attitudes usually lead you to some place you would rather not be and nearly always impede progress. Instead, let go of negative thinking. Make a choice everyday to look on the positive side of things and watch your goal progression improve.

It is possible to deal with the tough situations that arise in everyone?s life without becoming overly emotional. By learning how to remain calm during stressful situations, you have a higher chance of increasing your confidence needed for conquering any obstacle in your life. Learning to breathe deeply upon command can give you back your sense of control.

One important aspect of personal development is making the choice to lead a healthier life. It?s a well-known fact that a healthy body is a happy body. When you radiate health you are feeling strong and mentally alert. You will spend less time on health issues and more time enjoying your life. It should be a priority to become more healthy.

Employers put a greater emphasis on your ability to work, than the name of the school that you attended. Of course, there are some exceptions, such as the large financial institutions. Any degree from any school will open doors in your chosen field.

Everybody is different. Be sure to analyze this article for content that can help you specifically. The only way to gain any type of success is if you apply the material you just learned. If you know of anyone who could also pick up useful advice from this piece, pass it along and help them begin the journey to becoming a more well-rounded individual

First Kinect PT app goes into clinical trials | Coding4Fun Kinect ...

Today's inspirational post shows how the Kinect is taking a new, big step in how it's used in the medical field...

The West Health Institute announced that it has developed technology to aid physical therapy professionals and patients using Microsoft?s Kinect for Windows motion tracking platform. The application leverages Microsoft?s Kinect for Windows motion camera and a Windows 7 personal computer and provides interactive feedback and educational materials to help providers improve patient adherence to regimens and ensure that the exercises are performed correctly. The Institute is beginning clinical research studies of the technology with the Naval Medical Center of San Diego.

While there have been previous technology demonstrations that leveraged Kinect for physical therapy, the West Health Institute?s Spencer Hutchins, who co-invented the technology and serves as the project?s lead, told InformationWeek that the application, called Reflexion Rehabilitation Measurement Tool (RMT), is the first physical therapy app leveraging Kinect to go into clinical trials. The clinical research pilot studies will review the program?s usability and participants? adherence to therapy. Later studies will also measure clinical outcomes.

...

?The biggest problem with physical therapy is patients not doing enough of it or not doing it properly,? Hutchins stated. ?We are building a tool to help physical therapists measure progress in a fun way that could potentially help patients heal faster.?

Demotix Hits A Million Images, Proving The Crowd-Sourced Picture Agency Can Work

1349898229-palestinians-clash-with-idf-soldiers-in-ramallah_1514233We've been covering Demotix since their controversial launch in 2008 and frankly the jury at the time was out on whether they really could create what many had tried and failed to do: a crowd-sourced, breaking news pictures and video agency with a viable business model. Other startups had come and gone in that space, partly because they had focused too much on camera phones. Those images might have been 'on the ground', but they didn't turn into businesses which interested major news outlets. We saw Twitpic stumble as it tried this last year, for instance. But Demotix went after real photographers close to the scenes of breaking news. And that question appears to to have been answered today as they hit a million images produced on the platform.

Madonna strips in tribute to girl shot by Taliban

By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

Madonna's "MDNA Tour" has been rife with controversy?as it's made various stops around the world, and Wednesday night's performance in Los Angeles was no exception. Things started earnestly enough when Madonna took a break from performing to tell the sold-out crowd of 18,000 it was time to "have our serious chat."

Reuters, Getty Images

Malala Yousafzai, left, in an undated photo, and Madonna in concert on Wednesday in L.A.

"This made me cry," Madonna said, "The 14-year-old Pakistani girl who was shot on a schoolbus for writing a blog who wrote a blog about how important education was to her. The Taliban stopped her bus and shot her ...? Do you understand the sickness and absurdity of this?

"Support education! Support the people who support women!" Madonna then shouted to an approving crowd.

Madonna was referring to teen advocate Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by the Taliban on her way home from school in Mingora, Pakistan, on Tuesday. Yousafzai became a target of the Taliban because of a blog she had maintained about her life and support of girls' education, which she started writing when she was 11.

Later in her show, Madonna took things a step further and performed a striptease, during which she turned her back to reveal "Malala" written across it, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"This song is for Malala," she said, before launching into her song?"Human Nature."

News of the "tribute" spread to Pakistan, where some took to Twitter to voice disapproval of Madonna's gesture. "Get it Right: Associating #Madonna with #Malala IS DISRESPECT TO #Malala!!! Plz. Give #Malala a rest!" wrote @OHPakistan to NBC News' Amna Nawaz on Friday. Also weighing in was user @bijm30caahm, who wrote, "Not the right way to pay Homage to Brave Malala. Its a way to earn cheap self popularity."

The striptease and accompanying performance of "Human Nature" have been a staple of Madonna's tour. In Turkey, she flashed her nipple during the performance, a gesture that was believed to represent her disapproval for the prime minister's call to ban abortion and C-sections, and lend support to?My Body is Mine, a Turkish women's group fighting the ban.

Home Staging 101: Three Strategies to Connect with Your Target ...

The primary marketing focus of most home staging professionals is on real estate agents.?and for good reason. These individuals are in a uniquely valuable position for home stagers, being able to provide a consistent flow of business once they believe in the value.

But you don?t have to be reliant solely on agents to generate business. In addition to brokers, realtors, and other gatekeepers many home stagers have found success by marketing directly to homeowners,. Below are three ways that you can accomplish this.

1) Build a social media presence. Social media sites, particularly Facebook, are a great way to connect with homeowners. Because Facebook is such a visual site, pictures do very well in terms of generating exposure. Post pictures of recent jobs, projects, or ideas. Keep in mind that posting content alone doesn?t accomplish anything?you also need an audience.? Invite comments plus ask friends and family? to spread the word encouraging their friends and acquaintances to connect via Facebook.

2) Get out in the community. Another great way to reach homeowners is simply to become more visible in your community. Look for an opportunity to participate in a cause or an event that you believe in?providing food for the less fortunate, cleaning up a local park, or whatever suits you best. Consistently supporting and participating in such events will dramatically improve visibility in your community.

3) Focus on referrals. There is arguably no greater marketing tool known to man than generating sincere referrals. Homeowners will take sincere word-of-mouth recommendations from their friends and family members much more seriously than other form of marketing. So whenever you?re working with a homeowner, understand? it?s not just one job?it?s a highly valuable marketing opportunity. Provide excellent service and do everything you can to turn the homeowner into a ?raving fan? of your business. If you?re successful, the word WILL spread amongst your target customers!

Building relationships with real estate agents and brokers should be an important part of your marketing strategy. But don?t become reliant solely on them. The strategies we?ve discussed here today will help you connect directly with homeowners in your market.

Please get in touch with me today if you?d like to learn more!

Asian shares weak on growth woes, euro on backfoot

SINGAPORE/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Asian shares tracked Wall Street lower on Thursday as weak forecasts from U.S. corporate bellwethers underscored concern over global demand, particularly from China, while rising tensions in the Middle East pulled oil prices off lows.

European stock index futures also pointed to a weaker start, with shares seen falling for a fourth straight session.

At 0602 GMT, futures for Euro STOXX 50, Germany's DAX and France's CAC were down 0.3 to 0.6 percent. Financial bookmakers called Britain's FTSE 100 to open down as much as 0.3 percent.

The euro didn't lose much ground, but was on the backfoot due to uncertainty over Spain's bailout prospects, with S&P's two-notch sovereign downgrade of Spain dampening the mood further.

European stocks and the euro could feel some heat on Thursday because the rating downgrade was announced after markets closed the previous day, but the move by S&P itself was not much of a shock. Rather, markets were reacting to fear that another downgrade would push Spain's rating to junk.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.4 percent, with the information technology sub-index falling 1.7 percent and the materials sub-index shedding 0.6 percent.

A warning from Chevron Corp over its third-quarter results followed Alcoa's outlook for dwindling aluminum consumption, with both shares falling more than 4 percent and dragging the S&P 500 to its fourth straight loss overnight.

Japan's Nikkei share average posted a third day of losses, shedding 0.6 percent to close at its lowest level in more than two months.

The euro was down very slightly, 0.05 percent lower at $1.2865, above its lowest since October 1 of $1.2835 hit on Wednesday.

"With U.S. stocks falling, and IMF and World Bank raising alarms about the Chinese growth slowdown, market sentiment is against risk - and growth-sensitive or high-yielding currencies are prone to downside risks," said Yuji Saito, director of foreign exchange at Credit Agricole in Tokyo.

The International Monetary Fund cut its global growth forecast this week for the second time since April. Ahead of the IMF's twice-yearly meetings in Tokyo, IMF managing director Christine Lagarde said political wrangling was adding to economic uncertainty, slowing growth in both advanced and emerging economies.

She also prodded the world's rich countries on Thursday to take swifter action as Europe's debt crisis drags on.

"We expect action and we expect courageous and cooperative action on the part of our members," Lagarde told reporters.

So, despite stronger-than expected industrial production numbers from Italy and France, as well as a positive U.S. inventories report, investors chose instead to dwell on Chevron's third-quarter warning.

"We think risk assets will perform poorly as long as investors are focused on the third quarter," ING's head of Asian research, Tim Condon, said in a note to clients, while also pointing to improvements in South Korean trade data as a sign things might improve.

AUSSIE FINDS SUPPORT

Australian shares were helped off early lows by data showing a jump in jobs in September and more people looking for work.

The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was 0.2 percent lower at 4,483, off a session low of 4,460.4.

The Australian dollar also rose a third of a cent after the government data, which showed employment rose 14,500 in September, compared to forecasts for a slight rise of 3,750. (Full Story).

Oil prices steadied in early Asian trading after having fallen in volatile trading overnight. U.S. crude futures, which fell over 1 percent, were up 34 cents to $91.59 while Brent futures climbed toward $115 a barrel as rising tensions in the Middle East stoked supply fears.

"There's been fairly large price swings sideways for the past two weeks or so," said Tony Nunan, a risk manager at Mitsubishi Corp in Tokyo.

"We have a very weak economy so there are worries about oil demand growth while geopolitical issues keep the market supported."

Shelling along the Turkey-Syria border and continued hostility between Iran and the West over Tehran's disputed nuclear programme have reinforced fears about potential threats to oil supplies from the Middle East Gulf.

Spot gold was little changed at $1,763.55 an ounce.

(AP) ? Chris Carpenter was every bit the postseason ace he's been in the past for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Taking the mound for only the fourth time in 2012, missing a rib after surgery to cure numbness on his right side, the 37-year-old Carpenter pitched scoreless ball into the sixth inning, rookie Pete Kozma delivered a three-run homer, and the defending champion Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 8-0 Wednesday to take a 2-1 lead in their NL division series.

All in all, quite a damper on the day for a Nationals Park-record 45,017 red-wearing, towel-twirling fans witnessing the first major league postseason game in the nation's capital in 79 years.

Three relievers finished the shutout for the Cardinals, who can end the best-of-five series in Thursday's Game 4 at Washington.

Kyle Lohse will start for St. Louis. Ross Detwiler pitches for Washington, which is sticking to its long-stated plan of keeping Stephen Strasburg on the sideline the rest of the way.

The Cardinals won 10 fewer games than the majors-best Nationals this season and finished second in the NL Central, nine games behind Cincinnati, sneaking into the postseason as the league's second wild-card under this year's new format. But the Cardinals become a different bunch in the high-pressure playoffs ? no matter that slugger Albert Pujols and manager Tony La Russa are no longer around.

Carpenter still is, even though even he didn't expect to be pitching this year when he encountered problems during spring training and needed an operation in July to correct a nerve problem. The top rib on his right side was removed, along with connecting muscles.

He returned Sept. 21, going 0-2 in three starts totaling 17 innings, so it wasn't clear how he'd fare Wednesday. Yeah, right. Carpenter allowed seven hits and walked two across his 5 2-3 innings to improve to 10-2 over his career in the postseason. That includes a 4-0 mark while helping another group of wild-card Cardinals take the title in the 2011 World Series, when he won Game 7 against Texas.

With the exception of Ian Desmond ? 3 for 4 on Wednesday, 7 for 12 in the series ? the Nationals' hitters are struggling mightily. They've scored a total of seven runs in the playoffs and went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base in Game 3.

Rookie phenom Bryce Harper's woes, in particular, stand out: He went 0 for 5, dropping to 1 for 15.

Carpenter was pretty good with a bat in his hands, collecting a pair of hits, including a double off the wall that was about a foot or two away from being a homer. When he reached second base, he raised his right fist.

Similarly, neither club could be sure which Edwin Jackson would show up for NL East champion Washington, a year after he was part of the Cardinals' championship team: The one who struck out 10 and allowed one unearned run in eight innings against St. Louis on Aug. 30, or the one who lasted only 1 1-3 innings in a loss to the Cardinals on Sept. 28.

Much closer to the second version, it turned out, although he did recover from a rough start to retire eight of his last 10 batters Wednesday.

Still, Jackson was done after five innings and four runs. The Cardinals tacked on four runs off relievers Craig Stammen, Christian Garcia and Ryan Mattheus.

Not since the original Senators lost to the New York Giants in the 1933 World Series had big league baseball stretched past the regular season in Washington. Back then, of course, there was no MLB Network in HD to carry a game the way there was Wednesday; indeed, television itself was in its infancy, period. And spectators in attendance way back then could not enjoy a beer at the ballpark, because prohibition wasn't repealed until a couple of months later.

With the Capitol Dome rising beyond left field, the crowd of today was ready to root, root, root for the home team, breaking into chants of "Let's go, Nats!" after player introductions and again after a four-jet flyover. And, boy, did they boo ? when Cardinals outfielder John Jay was announced as the game's first batter, when catcher Yadier Molina trotted to chat with Carpenter, even when Carpenter paused between pitches to tie his red-and-gray right shoe.

Most of all, they booed when Washington's Danny Espinosa was ruled out at first after bunting in the second. TV replays showed that Espinosa did beat third baseman David Freese's throw, but the call was missed by Jim Joyce ? an umpire best known for blowing a call at first base to ruin Detroit pitcher Armando Galarraga's bid for a perfect game in 2010.

Earlier, those boos were directed at Jackson.

The Cardinals opened the second inning with four consecutive hits, the biggest being Kozma's first-pitch homer into the first row in left off a 94 mph fastball to make it 4-0. Kozma took over as the Cardinals' everyday shortstop in September, replacing injured All-Star Rafael Furcal, and only had 72 at-bats during the regular season.

But he's only the latest in a series of "Who's that?" stars of this postseason.

NOTES: Cardinals LF Matt Holliday fouled a ball off his left leg in the eighth, stayed in to deliver a two-run single, then left for a pinch runner. ... Frank Robinson, the first manager of the Washington Nationals, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Former Senators slugger Frank Howard will have that honor for Game 4. Robinson wore his old No. 20 ? and so did the player crouching at home to catch the throw, Nationals shortstop Desmond, who switched from No. 6 to 20 before this season as a tribute to Robinson. The Hall of Famer won the Triple Crown as a player with the Orioles in 1966 ?current Nationals manager Davey Johnson was a teammate ? and said Wednesday "there is no doubt" Detroit's Miguel Cabrera should be the AL MVP over Los Angeles' Mike Trout season after leading the league in average, homers and RBIs this season. ... Lohse got the win when the Cardinals beat the Braves in the wild-card game. ... Detwiler will be making the first postseason appearance of his career. His last regular-season start also came against the Cardinals, and he went only 2 1-3 innings, giving up seven runs. Asked what he takes away from that game, Detwiler replied: "I try not to remember that one." ... Wednesday was the 88th anniversary of Washington's only World Series championship, won by the Senators on Oct. 10, 1924.
