A summary of the surveys conducted by national homebuilder?PulteGroup, Inc. (NYSE: PHM) shows that people are putting family first when making plans for their next move.? Whether it?s planning for more kids or anticipating relatives to move in, the 2012 survey results reveal that the economy is no match for family priorities.

?Across the board we are seeing more confidence in the market in general. ?Also, more families are making a deliberate choice to build a better bond among the generations and live closer to family and friends,? said?Deborah Wahl Meyer, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of PulteGroup.? ?PulteGroup?conducts the quarterly surveys in conjunction with our ongoing consumer research efforts to keep a pulse on consumer trends and understand what?s important to homebuyers and how they truly live in and enjoy their homes.?

Four PGHI surveys were conducted in 2012 and focused on a myriad of topics from retirement to first-time homebuyers. This year?s results revealed a variety of trends, highlighting consumer confidence in the economy and housing market:

• 61 percent of?still-working Baby Boomers?plan to retire in less than 10 years and aren?t delaying retirement plans.? 73 percent say they are financially prepared to retire in 10 years or less.
• 61 percent of?renters plan to buy?a home within the next two years.
• Top reasons renters have increased their interest in buying a home:? They like being able to call themselves homeowners (49 percent) and they view it as a good financial investment (44 percent).
• Renters are buying homes with?more space for family/kids?(36 percent) while current homeowners ages 18 ? 34 want a larger home for their growing families (68 percent).

The surveys also show the importance of family across all generations, and some significant changes in family dynamics that often influence their next new home plans:

• Homebuyers do not want to sacrifice family when buying a new home.? Only 21 percent of homeowners said moving away from their family would be a trade-off to get their ?dream? home.
• Twice as many households?as today expect to eventually share their home with their adult children or aging parents.? 31 percent anticipate at least one adult child moving back home; and 32 percent anticipate an aging parent living with them.
• Family bonding was cited as the top reason for having adult children move back home (46 percent) and for aging parents (48 percent) to move in.
• 84 percent of homeowners plan for their next home to be the same size or larger.
• About 62 percent of Baby Boomers want their home in retirement to be within the same state they currently live.? This represents a 20 percent increase compared with two years prior.
• 32 percent of Baby Boomers want to live within 20 miles of their children/grandchildren upon retirement.

U.S. Troops to be in up to 35 African Countries

The news on Christmas Eve that a U.S. Army brigade will begin sending small teams into as many as 35 African nations in 2013 indicates a still-expanding role for an all-volunteer Army that has been stretched nearly to the breaking point in recent years by a nearly nine-year war in Iraq and the ongoing war in Afghanistan now in its 11th year.

According to the Associated Press report, teams from the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division will "target" countries including Libya, Sudan, Algeria and Niger, where al-Qaeda-linked groups have been active. The mission will also will assist nations such as Kenya and Uganda that have been battling al-Shabaab militants on the front lines in Somalia, the AP reported.

Concerns about terrorist threats in Africa have grown in part from reports of a rise of al-Qaeda-linked groups on the continent, including the Boko Haram in Nigeria. They have also been heightened by this year's September 11 attack by militants on the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. The level of security at the facility and the alleged failures of the U.S. intelligence and military to detect and defend against the attack have been subjects of heated debate in Washington ever since.

The Army mission in Africa will be to conduct a wide array of exercises and training programs among the African nations, whose great diversity of languages and culture is expected to create a considerable challenge for the mission. Col. Matthew McKenna, who will begin training soldiers for the mission at Fort Riley, Kansas in March, described the difficulties that the language barriers alone present.

"In a very short time frame we can only teach basic phrases," he told the AP. "We focus on culture and the cultural impact ? how it impacts the African countries' military and their operations." Thomas Dempsey, a professor with the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, spoke of differences in culture and history as well as language among the many nations on the vast continent.

"How do you train for that in a way that would be applicable wherever they go?" asked Dempsey, a retired Army colonel. "The security challenges differ so dramatically that, to be honest, I really don't think it's feasible to have a continental training package."

The emphasis will apparently be on training African forces to defend their nations against insurgencies and terrorist attacks rather than on U.S. military operations, though Army officials noted the ability for American forces to launch attacks. The mission will have what has been described as a small drone, or unmanned bomber, capacity.

"If they want them for [military] operations, the brigade is our first sourcing solution because they're prepared," Gen. David Rodriguez, the head of U.S. Army Forces Command told the AP. "But that has to go back to the secretary of defense to get an execute order."

The 2nd Brigade ? known as the "Dagger Brigade" ? is receiving its regular combat training first, and then will move on to the more specific instruction needed for the deployments, such as language skills, cultural information, and other data about the African nations. In addition to the Pashtun and Farsi languages used mainly in Afghanistan and Iran, the soldiers are expected to learn French, Swahili, Arabic or other languages, in addition to features of the various local cultures.

"What's really exciting is we get to focus on a different part of the world and maintain our core combat skills," said Col. Jeff Broadwater, the brigade commander. "You see those threats [in Africa] in the news all the time."

The U.S. Africa Command, created with little fanfare in 2007, has thus far not resulted in the creation of American bases or a noticeable exercise of significant U.S. military influence on the continent. In fact, the command is based in Stuttgart, Germany, rather than on the African continent. Yet many African nations are reported to be eager for U.S. training and support as they struggle to build their own military forces to deal with everything form piracy to drug trafficking and insurgent attacks.

The new mission reflects the growing role of a U.S military that already has the world divided into six unified regional commands around the globe and has taken on an expanded security and "peacekeeping" operation in what has often been described as a "new world order." It is a role in sharp contrast with the older American tradition of avoiding regional conflicts and defending against attacks aimed at the United States. Critics of current U.S. foreign policy have argued that taking sides either for or against insurgencies in far-off lands has only increased threats to American security by multiplying the number of enemies of the United States throughout the world. Some have argued that the United States, whose post-World War II network of alliances was established for the stated purpose of containing and deterring the Soviet Union, is now looking for new opportunities to flex its military muscles and expand its influence across the globe.

"The creation of the US African Command (Africom) of course pointed to US involvements in wars on the continent, and indeed the US has since fought a war in Libya, deployed troops of Uganda, and is planning for another war in Mali," wrote Jason Ditz at Antiwar.com. A growing role for the U.S. military on the continent will lead to still more U.S. wars, he predicted. "Since the establishment of Africom, officials seem to figure that with enough troops and enough countries involved, the question of what wars and where can be worked out at their leisure."

Huawei has already confirmed that we're going to see its extra-large Ascend D2 at CES, but that doesn't mean a sneak peek is unwelcome. A recent thread pointed out the need for an Operating Agreement which led to maintenance rquirements of an LLC.

Not only do members need to have an Operating Agreement but the corporation needs to be maintained.

Minutes of Meetings will provide evidence of how buisness is conducted through your LLC. The best way for you to lose the liability protection provided by your LLC is to mismanage the company, allowing it to remain dormant and inactive.

But, keeping minutes of meetings of a one member LLC seems silly, but the LLC really isn't you so much as a seperate corporate beast that should be fed.

Any time your company acts in a significant transaction, like buying a property, such actions need to be authorized.

While meetings may not be specifically required by law for an LLC, an LLC is a corporate entity and meetings are required for corporations. Robert's Rules have been adopted my some states as to how meetings are to be conducted, adopting the outline will show a formal attempt to conduct your business.

That said, how can we make it easier to maintain an LLC and conduct meetings as well as recording meeting activities in the minutes?

Really, I used some standard verbage to show meetings were conducted in various corporate stuructures, just going through the motions, but when significant buisness was conducted anotations were made.

In about five minutes a month, minutes could be maintained without much buisness activity.

It may take longer when significant busienss is conducted, so what do you consider significant?

I'd suggest "significant" is outlined in a good Operating Agreement, major purchases, entering contracts, withdrawl of money above amounts set for normal business expenses, admission or withdrawl of members, obtaining insurance policies, making claims against others or addressing claims against the company, letting contracts, hiring an attorney or accountant, and engaging in any business not specifically described in the Articles of Incorporation.

In such matters, common sence must prevail, what is usual and customary may not need to be addressed, say with letting contracts or hiring professionals, sending a maintenance guy over for a minor repair is usual and customary in rentals, hiring a roofing contractor to replace a roof is significant.

BTW, a roofing job might be a good example why the company should approve the work, if there is an accident, if your company did not approve the work the damages could end up being on you, while I don't have a specific case, that example was given to me by our attorney, just passing it along and I do see such being an issue.

Dr. Craig Malkin: Can Cyborgs Fall in Love?

Up until Amber Case's thought-provoking TEDTalk, the whole idea of cyborgs falling in love might have seemed like the premise for an outrageous science fiction story. You know -- the kind with cheesy cover art, depicting a fetching, scantily clad fem-bot, draped around a beefy, steely-eyed hero. (I picture him winking.) But thanks to her work, and the work of MIT psychologist, Sherry Turkle, who also studies the influence of technology on identity, we've begun grappling with the far less amusing notion that we, ourselves, are the cyborgs. Suddenly, the question as to whether or not cyborgs can fall in love has become as pressing as it is real. And answering it requires that we take a hard, honest look at what we've become.

Even prior to the Internet, the idea that we exist in multiple versions of self was accepted wisdom by many. I am my daughter's father, my wife's husband, my client's therapist. Each relationship -- each environment -- calls on a slightly different version of who we are, so that in many ways, we create, and our created, by our own experiences. That's what Case and Turkle mean by the second self. It's the self we fashion for cyberspace even as it fashions us.

In the process of crafting our second self, we can only retain our humanity -- and our capacity to love -- if we use technology in a way that doesn't leave us anemic and enervated. . - Dr. Craig Malkin

When we talk about our cyborg self, then, what we're really describing is the as yet crude admixture that emerges from the blend of human needs, desires, motivations, and perceptions and the projected self we know through cyberspace. The second self isn't at all the same as the human self, precisely because who we are is limited and shaped by the cyberspace in which it dwells.

Case offers an apt metaphor, for example, for the astonishing constriction of time and space afforded by cell phone technology: a worm hole, the theoretical short cut between two points in time and space. With each call, our mental self is instantaneously transported from one point to another.

But the metaphor is telling. Many wormhole theories draw on the idea of a singularity or black hole, and most physicists agree that nearing a singularity would tear us apart. On Twitter, communication is restricted to 140 characters, so the self that emerges there is less nuanced by necessity. It serves a purpose in that world, reaching out in bits and pieces of communication, but the rest of us -- the more human part of us, messy, complicated, ambivalent, loving, striving, reaching, flinching -- is left behind.

We are rent asunder when we enter cyberspace, fragmented -- made smaller. The very constrictions of time and space that permit magically instantaneous communication also mean that the more we reach out with this second, cyberself, the less human we become; we only know ourselves -- and are known -- in bits and pieces. When the second self takes over, our full humanity begins to fade, like the iconic heroes of The Matrix, whose bodies atrophied from lack of use while their projected identities wandered through cyberspace, unwitting captives of the machines. The quality of our cyborg self -- and therefore, our capacity to love -- depends entirely on which self we use to reach out to those around us. That's where things get a little bleak.

Fathers, Turkle reminds us, now push their children on the swing with one hand, while glancing at their smart phone with the other. And more chillingly, in one of the more somber moments of her talk, Case warns us that, in all the frenzy to return texts and react to the rapid fire information which surrounds our cyborg selves, we've sacrificed the capacity to reflect; in so doing, we've lost ourselves. With no time to sit and think and dream and ponder and create, one of the most powerful means we have of knowing ourselves has begun to vanish. The self emerges in moments of silence, outside the hum and buzz of "the culture of distraction." Does the father pushing his child with one hand truly know himself? Does his daughter know him?

Love, I would argue, requires the full experience of our own humanity and self-knowledge. It requires that we make ourselves vulnerable, open, expansive, allowing the moment to fill us, and ourselves to fill the moment we're in. Our deepest attachments develop when we can show all of who we are and be accepted, and that includes romantic love. The crudely pixilated self of cyberspace can hardly represent the best of us.

In the process of crafting our second self, we can only retain our humanity -- and our capacity to love -- if we use technology in a way that doesn't leave us anemic and enervated. That means living with intention -- staying present, and choosing, wisely, the moments we decide to step through the wormhole, rather than quietly, mindlessly slipping into it. I once wrote that "technology is only as healthy as our use of it," and I still believe that. The more we reflexively dwell (and hide) in cyberspace, the less practice we have at being fully human, and the harder it becomes.

And that means we can only truly love -- and fall in love -- when we lead with our humanity, and reach out to touch one another with all of who we are. We can't afford to leave even one hand behind in cyberspace while embracing our children. It's up to us to decide how much humanity is left in the emerging cyborg race. And that means it's up to us whether or not cyborgs can fall in love.

AURORA, Colo. (Dec. 27, 2012) Researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine have figured out intimate details of how the hepatitis C virus takes over an invaded cell, a breakthrough that could point to way for new treatments for the virus.

Hep C hijacks the machinery by which a cell makes proteins and uses it instead to create proteins for the virus. Over the last two decades, researchers have figured out that Hep C uses an RNA molecule to do this. Now they're trying to fill in the details.

One key detail is reported in a paper published online Dec. 23 in Nature Structural and Molecular Biology. It's written by Jeffrey Kieft, PhD, an associate professor at the CU medical school's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics and an Early Career Scientist of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and his former graduate student, Megan Filbin, PhD, a graduate of the Program in Molecular Biology.

Working with researchers from the lab of Tamir Gonen at the Janelia Farm Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Kieft used ultra high-power electron microscopes to take images of individual RNA molecules from Hep C as they interacted with the cell's machinery. The researchers combined those images with a variety of other experiments and these clues led them to identify a new way that the virus' RNAs takes over the cell's machinery.

Specifically, the researchers focused on how a ribosome, the cell's protein-making factory, can be manipulated by the Hep C RNA to affect a part of the protein process called translocation. And they saw something else that even very small changes in the interactions important for that hijacking process can be blocked.

"This points the way to developing drugs to fight hepatitis C in ways that current therapies do not," Kieft says.

Growthology: Learning from business failure

There is a substantial body of research on the failure of new businesses. Among other topics, researchers have explored the causes of firm failure, the jobs destroyed by these business closings, and the impact of this churning on our economy more generally. In this post, we consider research that highlights a silver lining to the failure of a new business:? the benefits of this experience for a serial entrepreneur?s next endeavor. Yongwook Paik, a 2008 Kauffman Dissertation Fellow, examines the effects of prior firm-founding experience on subsequent firm performance in a paper?based on research for his PhD dissertation in Economics (see executive summary here).?

Paik hypothesizes that prior firm founding experience increases both the human capital and social capital of serial entrepreneurs, allowing them to build the skills they need for greater success in their next endeavor. Using data from U.S. venture-capital-financed semiconductor firms that entered the market during 1995-1999, Paik analyzes the effect of founders? prior firm-founding experiences on the survival rate and the annualized rate of return on investment in subsequent ventures.? He also takes into account selection effect of serial entrepreneurs and the role venture capitalists play by selecting the most promising new businesses and mentoring new companies. Comparing ?serial entrepreneurs? (those who have founded a company previously) to ?novice entrepreneurs (first-time founders), he finds that the survival rate of firms founded by serial entrepreneurs is substantially higher than that of firms founded by novice entrepreneurs, but that serial entrepreneurs do not see a greater annualized return on their investments.? Firm-founding experience, it seems, allows entrepreneurs to build the skills needed for early-stage firm survival, but not necessarily those that lead to greater financial success. In addition, he finds that the mentoring of venture capitalists helps a young firm survive in its early phases and results in a higher rate of return on investment.

This study offers significant insight into the way that entrepreneurs build the skills they need for later success and serves as an important reminder to venture capitalists and other funders of new businesses that serial entrepreneurs? previous failures are not indicators of future failure.? In fact, these experiences may lead to greater future success.

Some Things I Want In An E-Commerce Site | LevelTen | Dallas, TX

During the holidays I find myself shopping online more than in store. As much as I am thankful for the absence of crowds when shopping online, I also find that some sites are not offering me the experience that I desire. Sometimes, I get so frustrated looking for an item or a deal that I just give up for the day. So, in honor of my vexation toward some of these sites, I've decided to make a basic list of things I want in an e-commerce site.

• I Want to Feel Like I'm Shopping, But Without The Hassle
  One thing that I love about shopping in store is the feeling that I'm discovering something new on my own. Sometimes shoppers are just "browsering" (my little term for online browsing). Give your visitors the option to explore by adding interesting designs and intriguing copy. Just be sure that your copy matches with terms you use in store (ie. Denim vs. Jeans). Allow visitors to have an experience, not just rely on a search box. Consider this step like merchandising for your website. Would you put that sweater in your store's front window? If not, then keep it off your homepage.
• I Want Options
  Of course, you'll want your site to display if an item comes in another color and which sizes are available online. People will turn to your website when a product isn't available in store, so make searching as simple as possible. Consider adding a zoom feature so that viewers who haven't seen the product in store can have a better idea of materials and texture. It may also be beneficial to offer items that are only available online. Online exclusives can be a real hit because they are "rare" and can get a good word of mouth reputation.
• I Want To Feel Like I'm Getting A Deal
  Like it or not, people will go into your store to check out your product in person then see if they can get a better deal online. This technique is called "showrooming". It's easier for consumers to compare prices online since it only requires opening a new tab and running a search. Stay on top of good deals (shipping, sales, online codes, etc.) and excellent customer service both in store and online. Be aware that disgruntled customers will turn to the web to leave nasty comments about bad experiences. Make ease, availability, and reliability your winning factors.
• I Don't Want To Feel Like My Time Was Wasted
  Make navigation as simple as possible. Having categories like "Casual" in the main navigation tab might confuse someone who is trying to quickly find a dress. It's better to have the category "Dresses" in your main nav and then allow the user to filter by Casual, Formal, Workwear, etc. One popular refinement is "Filter By Price". Viewing items classified by price really makes finding deals a breeze. Another way to save your users time is to add infinite scrolling for products so that he or she won't have to keep clicking the "Next Page" button. Thoughtful planning and wireframing is the best way to save time for your user. Just keep it simple, if you get confused by your site, you can be sure that your user will too.
• I Want To Know That My Payment Is Secure
  This is a no brainer, right? Wrong. Be extra sure that transactions on your site are secure, and provide a statement to that effect. Do not slack off when it comes to your consumer's money. They are trusting your business and they deserve a secure checkout. Make sure you set up security certificates. Drupal's Secure Site module is a great tool to add to your site. Have your system send out immediate receipts to the buyer's email address. Online tracking also helps put a consumer's mind at ease when it comes to shipping.

TOKYO (AP) ? Old-guard veteran Shinzo Abe was voted back into office as prime minister Wednesday and immediately named a new Cabinet, ending three years of liberal administrations and restoring power to his conservative, pro-big-business party that has run Japan for most of the post-World War II era.

Abe, whose nationalist positions have in the past angered Japan's neighbors, is the country's seventh prime minister in just over six years. He was also prime minister in 2006-2007 before resigning for health reasons that he says are no longer an issue.

The outspoken and often hawkish leader has promised to restore growth to an economy that has been struggling for 20 years. His new administration also faces souring relations with China and a complex debate over whether resource-poor Japan should wean itself off nuclear energy after last year's earthquake and tsunami caused a meltdown at an atomic power plant.

On top of that, he will have to win over a public that gave his party a lukewarm mandate in elections on Dec. 16, along with keeping at bay a still-powerful opposition in parliament. Though his party and its Buddhist-backed coalition partner is the biggest bloc in the more influential lower house, Abe actually came up short in the first round of voting in the upper house, then won in a runoff.

Capitalizing on voter discontent with the left-leaning Democratic Party of Japan, Abe has vowed to shore up the economy, deal with a swelling national debt and come up with a fresh recovery plan following last year's tsunami disaster, which set off the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.

"Disaster reconstruction and economic recovery are our first and foremost tasks," new Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said in announcing what he called a "crisis breakthrough Cabinet."

In foreign policy, Abe has stressed his desire to make Japan a bigger player on the world stage, a stance that has resonated with many voters who are concerned that their nation is taking a back seat economically and diplomatically to China.

He has said he will support a reinterpretation of Japan's pacifist postwar constitution to loosen the reins on the military, stand up to Beijing over an ongoing territorial dispute and strengthen Tokyo's security alliance with Washington. Beijing has already warned him to tread carefully, and will be watching closely to see if he tones down his positions now that he is in office.

Abe led the Liberal Democratic Party to victory in nationwide elections this month to cement his second term as Japan's leader.

"I feel as fresh as the clear sky today," Abe told reporters before Wednesday's parliamentary vote, adding that he wanted to get right down to business.

His new Cabinet will feature another former prime minister, Taro Aso, as finance minister. Heading the foreign ministry is Fumio Kishida, an expert on the southern island of Okinawa, where many residents angry over crime and overcrowding want a big reduction in the number of U.S. troops they host ? now at about 20,000. The new defense minister is Itsunori Onodera, who was in Abe's previous administration.

Abe has already named a roster of top party executives that includes two women ? more than in previous LDP administrations ? and is younger than earlier ones, with three of the four in their 50s.

The LDP governed Japan for decades after it was founded in 1955. Before it was ousted in 2009, the LDP was hobbled by scandals and problems getting key legislation through a divided parliament.

This time around, Abe has promised to make the economy his top priority and is expected to push for a 2 percent inflation target designed to fight a problem that was until recently relatively unique in the world ? deflation. Continually dropping prices deaden economic activity, and the Japanese economy has been stuck in deflation for two decades.

Besides generous promises to boost public works spending ? by as much as 10 trillion yen ($119 billion), according to party officials ? Abe is pressuring the central bank to work more closely with the government to reach the inflation target.

Produced by Albuquerque filmmaker Jim Morrison in conjunction with the New Mexico State Attorney General?s Office, the video walks the viewer through the different pitfalls and processes an immigrant seeking legal residency or citizenship might encounter.

Titled in English ?Labyrinth: The Immigrant and the Law,? the half-hour program begins in the Paso del Norte borderland, where resident Modesta Flores offers historical recollections of a different Rio Grande and a less polarized time when friendly Border Patrol agents let migrants pass the line with a wink and a nod.

The documentary features interviews with Assistant New Mexico Attorney General Joel Cruz Esparza; Mauricio Ibarra; Mexican consul in Albuquerque; immigrant legal and social advocates; New Mexico immigration law attorney Megan Jordi; and a representative of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Longtime immigrants recall their own journeys as well as the problems of friends who followed in the migrant path.

With reports of legal scams surrounding the Obama Administration?s Deferred Deportation program for eligible young people, the production is a timely contribution to understanding the legalities and mechanisms of immigration law.

Young children are often victims of gunfire in US

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Before 20 first-graders were massacred at school by a gunman in Newtown, Conn., first-grader Luke Schuster, 6, was shot to death in New Town, N.D. Six-year-olds John Devine Jr. and Jayden Thompson were similarly killed in Kentucky and Texas.

Veronica Moser-Sullivan, 6, died in a mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., while 6-year-old Kammia Perry was slain by her father outside her Cleveland home, according to an Associated Press review of 2012 media reports.

Yet there was no gunman on the loose when Julio Segura-McIntosh died in Tacoma, Wash. The 3-year-old accidentally shot himself in the head while playing with a gun he found inside a car.

As he mourned with the families of Newtown, President Barack Obama said the nation cannot accept such violent deaths of children as routine. But hundreds of young child deaths by gunfire ? whether intentional or accidental ? suggest it might already have.

Between 2006 and 2010, 561 children age 12 and under were killed by firearms, according to the FBI's most recent Uniform Crime Reports. The numbers each year are consistent: 120 in 2006; 115 in 2007; 116 in 2008, 114 in 2009 and 96 in 2010. The FBI's count does not include gun-related child deaths that authorities have ruled accidental.

"This happens on way too regular a basis and it affects families and communities ? not at once, so we don't see it and we don't understand it as part of our national experience," said Daniel Webster, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research.

The true number of small children who died by gunfire in 2012 won't be known for a couple of years, when official reports are collected and dumped into a database and analyzed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects to release its 2011 count in the spring.

In response to what happened in Newtown, the National Rifle Association, the nation's largest gun lobby, suggested shielding children from gun violence by putting an armed police officer in every school by the time classes resume in January.

"Politicians pass laws for gun-free school zones ... They post signs advertising them and in doing so they tell every insane killer in America that schools are the safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk," said NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre.

Webster said children are more likely to die by gunfire at home or in the street. They tend to be safer when they are in school, he said.

None of the 61 deaths reviewed by The Associated Press happened at school.

Children die by many other methods as well: violent stabbings or throat slashings, drowning, beating and strangulation. But the gruesome recounts of gun deaths, sometimes just a few paragraphs in a newspaper or on a website, a few minutes on television or radio, bear witness that firearms too, are cutting short many youngsters' lives.

One week before the Newtown slayings, Alyssa Celaya, 8, bled to death after being shot by her father with a .38-caliber gun at the Tule River Indian Reservation in California. Her grandmother and two brothers also were killed, a younger sister and brother were shot and wounded. The father shot and killed himself amid a hail of gunfire from officers.

Delric Miller's life ended at 9 months and Angel Mauro Cortez Nava's at 14 months.

Delric was in the living room of a home on Detroit's west side Feb. 20 when someone sprayed it with gunfire from an AK-47. Other children in the home at the time were not injured.

Angel was cradled in his father's arms on a sidewalk near their home in Los Angeles when a bicyclist rode by on June 4 and opened fire, killing the infant.

Most media reports don't include information on the type of gun used, sometimes because police withhold it for investigation purposes.

Gun violence and the toll it is taking on children has been an issue raised for years in minority communities.

The NAACP failed in its attempt to hold gun makers accountable through a lawsuit filed in 1999. Some in the community raised the issue during the campaign and asked Obama after he was re-elected to make reducing gun violence, particularly as a cause of death for young children, part of his second-term agenda.

"Now that it's clear that no community in this country is invulnerable from gun violence, from its children being stolen ... we can finally have the national conversation we all need to have," said Ben Jealous, president of the NAACP.

This year's gun deaths reviewed by the AP show the problem is not confined to the inner city or is simply the result of gang or drug violence, as often is the perception.

Faith Ehlen, 22 months, Autumn Cochran, 10, and Alyssa Cochran, 11, all died Sept. 6. Their mother killed them with the shotgun before turning it on herself. Police said she had written a goodbye email to her boyfriend before killing the children in DeSoto, Mo., a community of about 6,300.

In Dundee, Ore., Randall Engels used a gun to kill his estranged wife Amy Engels and son Jackson, 11, as they ate pizza on the Fourth of July. An older sibling of Jackson's also was killed. Engels then committed suicide. The town of more than 5,000 people boasts on its website that it is a semirural town with "the cultural panache of a big city."

Many of the children who died in 2012 were shot with guns that belonged to their parents, relatives or baby sitters, or were simply in the home. Webster said children's accidental deaths by guns have fallen since states passed laws requiring that guns be locked away from youths or have safeties to keep them from firing.

But even people trained in gun use slip up ? and the mistakes are costly.

A Springville, Utah, police officer had a non-service gun in his home that officials said did not have external safeties. His 2-year-old son found the gun and shot himself on Sept. 11. The names of the father and son were not released at the time of the shooting.

Obama has tapped Vice President Joe Biden to shape the administration's response to the Newtown massacre. The administration will push to tighten gun laws, many that have faced resistance in Congress for years. The solutions may include reinstating a ban on assault-style rifles, closing gun buying background check loopholes and restricting high-capacity magazines.

Those may have limited effect for children like Amari Markel-Purrel Perkins, of Clinton, Md. He shot himself in the chest on April 9 with a gun that an adult had stashed inside a Spiderman backpack.

Like most of the child victims at Newtown, Amari was 6.
