Why: Guantanamo is a global symbol of human rights violations and lawlessness by the US government. From torture to indefinite detention to military commissions, the human rights violations Guantanamo represents are immoral, illegal under US and international law and--according to military and intelligence experts--ineffective and counterproductive to security.

Despite President Obama's executive order to close Guantanamo, the detention facility remains open--and Congress is on the verge of passing legislation that would keep it that way. At the same time, fear-mongerers like former Vice President Cheney, Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Presidential hopefuls Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann and Rick Pain are calling for a return to water-boarding and other "enhanced interrogation techniques"--otherwise known as torture.

On the 10th anniversary of Guantanamo help show the US government and media that citizens demand closure of Guantanamo and an end to human rights violations in the name of national security. We call for detainees to either be charged and fairly tried in US federal court, or be released. We call for an end to Islamophobia and fear-mongering. We call for accountability for torture and demand it is never used again. We call for security with human rights. Join us!
