Home security is crucial in order to protect your family and possessions, but what if you also work out of your home? In that case, your home security also becomes business security and you need to not only protect your house, family and personal belongings, but also your business property, including any digital property that could be the target of hackers or digital thieves. If you are someone who works from home, you need to make sure that you security is up to snuff in more than one area so that you can protect your business property as well as your personal property.

Working from home is becoming more and more common in the new economy. You may be a freelancer or independent contractor and work for yourself. Or, you may telecommute to your job. In either case, you will want to make sure that your home security systems can protect your office and your personal belongings. This means integrating digital security solutions like having adequate virus protection, secure communications channels and firewall software and the old fashioned physical security that comes from having robust locks on your important and sensitive files and for your home office in general.

If you work from home, you will want to make sure that your computer is secured from any digital threats, such as viruses, trojans and malicious individuals like hackers. If you don?t work in a particularly sensitive industry, you may think that it is unlikely that you will be subject to a digital attack, but the fact is that many of these attacks are based on your behavior, not someone else specifically seeking you out. If you don?t have adequate virus protection and visit a malicious website, you could be at risk of having your information and identity stolen. Depending on what is on your computer, you could also have the information of your clients or customers stolen as well, which is a great way to very quickly destroy your reputation if you are an independent contractor or small business owner and to get fired if you are employed. It?s best to make sure that you have updated software and to be very careful when visiting uncharted corners of the web.

But, home business security also includes physical security as well. You should make sure you have a lockable filing cabinet if you work with physical documents and you should also have a backup drive for your files as well, to protect yourself against potential malicious actors or even just power loss or accidental deletion by user error. Having encryption on these drives may also be a smart move. The important thing is to make sure that you are developing robust home security systems and adopting practices that can keep you safe and secure physically and digitally.
