Lancy will discuss his work on the anthropology of childhood and how it is changing our understanding of what is and isn?t ?natural? in children?s life histories. Lancy and colleagues are finding new ways to tease apart the effects of nurture and nature and demonstrating how we have often turned nurture into nature by failing to acknowledge the ethnocentric quality of many of our common or even ?scientific? assumptions about child development. Lancy will argue that contemporary western society is a poor model for building an understanding of universal or natural aspects of childhood because our views on children and our child-rearing practices are so ?weird.?
