Keane joins Beckham's MLS-leading Galaxy

CARSON, Calif. - If Robbie Keane has any questions about being a European soccer star in Hollywood, he can simply ask his new midfielder with all the tattoos.

David Beckham is pretty sure the Irish superstar will figure it out on his own while they chase an MLS title with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

With an Irish flag flying above the pitch at Home Depot Center, Keane went through his first training session Friday with his new club. He was welcomed by Beckham and Landon Donovan, who both believe Keane can fix the MLS-leading Galaxy's only serious deficiency: goal-scoring from their forwards.

"It's a very exciting opportunity for me, something that I'm going to relish," Keane said before receiving his new No. 14 jersey in front of dozens of cheering Galaxy supporters and young players. "Hopefully I can bring something different to them, and score a lot of goals."

The Galaxy are counting on it. Although they lead the league standings in the race for their second straight Supporters' Shield, they didn't hesitate to use MLS' designated-player system again to land a third star who can be paid above the league salary cap.

Los Angeles acquired Keane from Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, and his first training session capped a hectic seven-day period since learning of the Galaxy's interest. The 10th-leading goal-scorer in Premier League history is expected to debut for Los Angeles on Saturday night against the San Jose Earthquakes.

Keane played sparingly in the Premier League over the past two seasons, and he became intrigued by MLS when Beckham trained with Tottenham several months ago.

"I've played in the Premiership for a long time, and kind of did what I had to do there," Keane said. "It's time for a new challenge, and it's something you can't take lightly. For me, it was an easy decision."

The Galaxy certainly did their best to make Keane feel at home: The club raised the Irish flag above the pitch at Home Depot Center, which was festooned with green-and-orange balloons and decorations. Media and fans who attended Keane's first news conference were treated to pints of Guinness along with corned beef brisket, cabbage and boiled potatoes.

Beckham never urged Keane to try MLS because "that would have been illegal," he said with a laugh, but simply told the truth about the Galaxy and its mix of excellent fans, aggressive front-office support and ideal weather, not to mention L.A.'s celebrity perks.

"We know he's going to score goals," Beckham said. "You don't become one of the top-10 scorers in the Premiership without that ability. He works hard, and everybody loves the Irish. He brings a lot of qualities that we need."

Keane shrugs off criticism in the Irish media that MLS is a level of soccer below his abilities, saying the league is growing in competitive quality every year. The Irish national team captain also isn't worried about the extra travel for Ireland's two key qualifying matches for Euro 2012 in September.

"I've always been committed to Ireland, and that will continue," Keane said. "We have two massive, massive games next month, and I'll be there."

Los Angeles' management, from ownership to coach and general manager Bruce Arena, again didn't hesitate to make an expensive move for a high-profile star, even if that team-building strategy hasn't endeared them to the rest of the North American league.

"The last time I looked, these guys are in first place," said Tim Leiweke, the president of Galaxy owner AEG. "We don't mind having a target on our backs, and we understand everyone dislikes us. My message to them is, if you don't like it, go get your own."

Arena confirmed that Keane most likely will start for the Galaxy on Saturday night after just one training session in which the Irishman looked sharp and free of jetlag symptoms, Donovan said.

"We understand we've got a lot of pressure and expectations, but we're ready for it," said Donovan, the Galaxy's captain and MLS' second-leading goal-scorer.

With Keane and Donovan likely to return for next season in Los Angeles, Beckham realizes the club will be eager to learn whether he'll extend his groundbreaking five-year commitment, which is up after the season.

"I just have to see how my body feels at the end of the season," Beckham said. "I've always said I'm happy here. I want to be part of this franchise, and I will be, no matter where I am next year. This is exciting, to get a player like Landon and a player like Robbie on the field with you. I'll continue to enjoy that."

Lost Russian Communications Satellite Found in Wrong Orbit (SPACE.com)

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. ? A $300 million Russian telecommunications satellite launched Aug. 18 disappeared from the view of ground controllers and the U.S. space surveillance network along with the rocket upper stage that carried it into orbit, according to industry officials and the Russian space agency, Roscosmos.

More than 24 hours after the 5,800-kilogram Express-AM4 satellite separated from the Proton rocket's Breeze-M upper stage, neither object could be found, officials said. The U.S. Space Surveillance Network of ground radars was tracking a single object that one official said was neither the Breeze-M nor the Express-AM4, but rather an auxiliary propellant tank from the Proton rocket.

But by mid-day Eastern Daylight Time Aug. 19, the U.S. Space Surveillance Network had located the Express-AM4 satellite, saying it was in an orbit with an apogee of 20,317 kilometers, a perigee of 1,007 kilometers and an inclination relative to the equator of 51.3 degrees. One industry official said it would be difficult, from this position, to maneuver Express-AM4 into operational position in geostationary orbit with sufficient life remaining to make the effort worthwhile.

At press time, however, neither Roscosmos nor the Express-AM4 owner, Russian Satellite Communications Co. (RSCC) of Moscow, was in a position to declare the mission a total loss. The possibility remained that the satellite, even in a wrong orbit, could be salvaged and serve at least a portion of its planned 15-year mission.

Fate of satellite Express-AM4

Even a partial solar array deployment would permit Express-AM4 to wait until it received further instructions from ground controllers, assuming it had assumed the standard emergency position of pointing toward the sun. Whether this was the case was unknown.

"You're looking at a very large area in which the Breeze-M could have dropped off the satellite," one official said. "Indications are that the Breeze-M was high enough at the time to permit the satellite to survive in orbit and generate solar power, even if its location is not optimal. But there is a real possibility that it would be salvaged, even if its operational life is reduced."

Express-AM4, built by Astrium Satellites of Europe with input from Russian industry, is a Eurostar 3000 satellite frame carrying 63 active transponders in Ku-, C-, L- and Ka-band. The two Ka-band transponders will be satellite fleet operator RSCC?s first use of Ka-band for broadband communications links.

RSCC is planning a big expansion of its Ka-band capacity with the AM5 and AM6 satellites now under construction by MDA Corp. of Canada.

Russian rocket launch

Express-AM4 was launched aboard a Proton-M rocket from Russia's Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The mission was contracted from Moscow-based Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center, which is the Proton and Breeze-M prime contractor.

Khrunichev-owned International Launch Services (ILS) of Reston, Va., which markets Proton rockets on the commercial market, was not involved in the launch as the RSCC satellite is viewed as part of the Russian federal space program even if it has a largely commercial function.

ILS on Aug. 19 issued a statement on behalf of Khrunichev saying in part: "The Proton M launch vehicle performed nominally, and the ascent unit, including the Breeze M upper stage and the spacecraft, separated at the appropriate time. Contact with the Breeze M and [Express-AM4] spacecraft was lost after the fourth burn of the Breeze M upper stage. Roscosmos specialists were able to locate the Breeze-M upper stage. Efforts are now underway to establish contact with the Express-AM4 spacecraft."

What the statement does not say is that the Breeze-M's on-board computer guided it to a mistaken, and still unidentified, drop-off point whose apogee, perigee and inclination relative to the equator are unknown.

The vehicle was supposed to deliver the Express-AM4 into an orbit with an apogee of 35,786 kilometers and a perigee of 5,210 kilometers, with an inclination of 20.5 degrees.

From that location the satellite would use its own power to circularize its orbit into geostationary position about 36,000 kilometers over the equator.

Investigations under way

ILS said the Russian government has established a board of inquiry, and that ILS, as is its custom in Proton failures, will create its own failure review oversight board. Express-AM4 was insured for $270.5 million, according to two insurance underwriters.

RSCC officials said they would have no comment on the Express-AM4 until the satellite?s status was clarified.

In addition to RSCC, at least two other satellite operators are likely to be affected by the Breeze-M failure.

SES of Luxembourg's QuetzSat-1 satellite, which has been fully leased, is next up on the ILS manifest. The September launch date, which already represents a delay from the original planning, now looks compromised. Each month?s delay deprives SES of guaranteed revenue.

ViaSat Inc. of Carlsbad, Calif., had hoped to launch the ViaSat-1 consumer broadband satellite in late September aboard an ILS Proton-Breeze-M rocket. [Related: ViaSat-1 Satellite Damaged at Factory]

ViaSat-1's launch is already several months behind schedule because of two delivery delays. One followed a factory incident in which hydraulic fluid leaked onto the satellite, and the second when all Space Systems/Loral-built satellites, including ViaSat-1, were grounded as Loral verified their solar-array deployment mechanisms.

ViaSat?s WildBlue satellite consumer broadband business in the United States has been unable to accept new customers in the regions with highest demand because its current satellite capacity over those regions is saturated.

Turkey strikes Kurdish rebels in Iraq (Reuters)

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (Reuters) ? Turkish warplanes and artillery pounded Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq for a second night, hours after the rebels mounted attacks on security forces in southeastern Turkey.

The Turkish raids, the first against rebels holed up in the mountains of northern Iraq in more than a year, mark a stark escalation of the 27-year-old conflict after the collapse of efforts toward a negotiated settlement.

Late on Friday a Reuters witness said 10 warplanes took off from an airbase in southeastern Turkey in what appeared to herald a third night of strikes against Kurdish guerrillas.

There was no immediate confirmation by the Turkish military, which earlier said warplanes had attacked 28 Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) targets on Thursday in the areas of Qandil mountain, Hakurk, Avasin-Basyan and Zap.

"In coordination with the air operation, intense artillery fire was directed at 96 targets identified in the same areas," the General Staff said in a statement. "Activities in the fight against terrorism will continue decisively at home and abroad."

The military released cockpit footage showing blasts and billowing smoke as laser-guided missiles slammed into targets described as PKK shelters, stores and anti-aircraft sites during raids which drew criticism from Baghdad.

Iraq's Deputy Foreign Minister Labeed Abbawi condemned the strikes, telling Reuters: "Our position is clear. We reject violations and overstepping of borders. This issue cannot be resolved through military action."

"Iraq should have been informed about this to find other ways to resolve this escalation," he said.

Turkey launched the attacks on rebels in response to a spate of rebel attacks in recent months and an ambush on Wednesday that killed nine servicemen. The PKK in Iraq said none of its people were hurt.

"There were no PKK casualties in the shelling that continued last night," PKK spokesman Roj Welat told Reuters.

On Thursday night the PKK, designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, carried out simultaneous attacks in Turkey's southeastern Siirt province.

Rebels besieged a paramilitary gendarmerie post in Eruh, with rocket launchers and rifles, killing two officers and wounding four soldiers. Two PKK fighters were killed in subsequent clashes, security sources said.

In the nearby district of Pervari, rebels wounded four civilians during similar attacks on security installations.

The guerrillas also clashed with troops in eastern Tunceli province and one PKK militant was killed, sources said.

FURTHER MILITARY ACTION EXPECTED

Some 40 Turkish security personnel have been killed in clashes in the last month and further air action was likely for as long as fighting on the ground continues.

"I think those deciding on the air operations will sustain them intermittently for as long as appropriate opportunities emerge," Nihat Ali Ozcan, a security analyst at the Ankara-based think tank TEPAV, told Reuters.

"At times like this governments have to manage not just terrorism but their own public opinion. Hence air operations, more than harming the PKK militarily, serve the government in managing public opinion," Ozcan said.

It was not clear whether the air assaults might be a prelude to an incursion by land forces, which Turkey has sent into northern Iraq in the past to tackle PKK fighters.

World diplomatic attention has been focused on unrest in Turkey's neighbor Syria and in Libya, where rebels are closing on leader Muammar Gaddafi's stronghold in Tripoli. But a major Turkish incursion in northern Iraq could inflame ethnic tensions.

Ozcan said a short ground operation with limited targets was feasible if the government could convince the United States and the Kurdish administration in northern Iraq on the issue, but such a move was seen as unlikely.

The Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government, which has enjoyed semi-autonomy from the central Iraqi government since 1991, said the military attacks undermined its sovereignty.

"Problems cannot be resolved by resorting to force and military action, but only through dialogue and negotiations," Kawa Mahmoud, a Kurdistan government spokesman, said in a statement on the KRG website.

The Kurdish conflict also raises domestic passions in Turkey. Further legal action could be taken against Kurdish politicians, currently boycotting parliament and accused of close links to the PKK.

The pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) called for a bilateral ceasefire by the PKK and state and said the government would be to blame for further violence if it failed to advance reforms sought by the 12-million-strong Kurdish minority.

"Prime Minister (Tayyip) Erdogan will be personally responsible for each and every death from this moment on, if the government fails to take up this agenda despite the BDP's calls for a peaceful solution," senior BDP deputy Selahattin Demirtas told a news conference in Istanbul.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict since the PKK took up arms for Kurdish self-rule in 1984.

Many More Kids Hospitalized for Mental Illness: Study (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Aug. 15 (HealthDay News) -- Short-stay hospitalizations of children with mental illnesses surged between 1996 and 2007, while psychiatric admissions among the elderly declined in that period, according to a new study examining changing patterns in psychiatric hospitalization in the United States.

Admissions for children aged 5 to 13 surged 81 percent in that time period-- from 156 per 100,000 children in the general population each year to 283 per 100,000 children, the study found. Psychiatric admissions for teenagers aged 14 to 19 rose by nearly 42 percent.

"A substantial increase in acute care psychiatric hospitalization rates and inpatient occupancy for children and adolescents, a moderate increase in the hospitalization rate of adults, and a steep decline for elderly individuals represent significant developments in mental health treatment in the United States with potentially strong ramifications for quality of care and service financing," wrote report author Joseph C. Blader, assistant professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral science at Stony Brook University School of Medicine in New York.

"The fact that this recent rise occurred despite pressures toward minimizing hospitalizations for psychiatric illness suggests that rising hospitalization rates for youth more likely correspond to clinical need rather than overuse," Blader said in a university news release.

For teenagers, the rate of acute psychiatric admissions was nearing the rate for adults by 2007, the study said.

Admissions for adults aged 20 to 64 increased by 8 percent, the study found, but acute psychiatric hospitalization for people aged 65 or older fell by 17.5 percent.

The researchers also noted more admissions for bipolar disorder and fewer primary diagnoses of anxiety disorder.

For the study, researchers analyzed data from the National Center for Health Statistics, a program of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on short-stay (fewer than 30 days on average) hospitalization trends for psychiatric patients.

During the study period, private insurance reimbursements declined, but coverage from government sources rose, the study authors said.

Also, while short hospital stays increased for psychiatric conditions, long-term psychiatric hospitalization decreased from 1970 through the 1990s.

The study, published online in the Archives of General Psychiatry, will appear in the journal's December print edition.
