Rousey, Kaufman, Carano ? The World According to Munah

In case you were wondering, female mixed martial arts is still very much alive and kicking.? The latest installment of the Invicta Fighting Championships is this Saturday night, and in August, Strikeforce returns to Showtime with a main event that will feature champ Ronda Rousey attempting to remove challenger Sarah Kaufman's arm in the most painful, non-surgical way possible.? Yep.? Wimmins.? They be fightin'.? So in the spirit of all this impending violence perpetrated by the fairer sex, Cagewriter tracked down 125-pound female fighter Munah Holland, who knocked out Strikeforce veteran Carina Damm two weeks ago at Matrix Fights (a regional show in Philadelphia) to get her perspective on things.? She is, after all, on the front lines.

Things to know about Holland: she's a product of the Tiger Schulmann MMA system, and manages one of the organization's gyms in New Jersey.? In 2004, she won the prestigious Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament, transitioned to professional fighting with Chuck Norris' ill-fated kickboxing promotion the World Combat League, and now fights in the cage, shimmying out of the clutches of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts and feeding them knuckles until they fall.? ?In her MMA debut, Holland brutalized Kim Couture for three rounds; more recently, she's KO'd top New England fighter Marianna Kheyfets in Bellator and put away Damm.?

That's Holland.? Here's what she had to say about some of her fellow fighters:

On Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey - "Ronda is, I would say, this deliciously deadly, amazing person.? She has something that, when I watch her fight, is incredibly contained, and at the same time, explosive.? It's really fun to watch, and her ground game is sick.? She is definitely a force to be reckoned with, no matter her opponent in front of her.? I can't wait for the upcoming fight between her and Sarah Kaufman ? I think that's going to be a great fight."

On top Strikeforce bantamweight challenger and former champ Sarah Kaufman - "I've watched Sarah for a long time, because as a female martial artist, she was one of the girls I knew about first.? She's got really, really powerful hands ? like, lead in her hands.? She's very dangerous.? She's constantly evolving? got a lot of heart, and like Ronda, she's a force to be reckoned with.? And Sarah has some very good wrestling, so it's going to be interesting, because if Sarah can maintain her wrestling defense and use her hands and use her range, it could be a really interesting fight.? If it stays standing, Sarah can do some damage with her hands.? We haven't really seen Ronda's chin, we don't know how much damage it can take."? Her prediction for the August 18 Strikeforce title fight?? "If it stays standing, Sarah's going to have the advantage.? If it goes to the ground, my gut says Ronda."

On former Strikeforce bantamweight champ Miesha Tate - "I love Miesha.? I once said this out loud and people heard me, but if you have a bum that looks like Miesha's, you've got to plaster it everywhere.? She's beautiful, she's tough as nails.? And that fight with Ronda, that was sick."

On former Strikeforce featherweight champ Gina Carano - "Gina, I think, has done a world of good for female fighting in general.? She's chosen her own path, and gone the way she feels where her future lies.? You have to do whatever it is you have to do in this world to have a life and a good living, but I thank her for exposing female martial artists to the world, and making it important for people to watch and making it exciting for people to watch, and proving that, regardless of whether it's females or males, it's just a great sport to watch.? She proved that the numbers can be there, that the seats can be filled for female mixed martial artists just as they can for men."

On former Strikeforce featherweight champ Cris "Cyborg" Santos ? "Cyborg would scare most grown men away in the cage.? The first time I saw Cris Cyborg, I was like, 'Uh, this woman is just frightening.'? And frightening in a good way.? What a beast.? What a beast of mass proportions.? This girl? frightening strength, amazing ability coming from Chute Boxe, can really take so much.? She's just like a pitbull.? She's just going to keep on coming and keep on coming."

On female MMA pioneer Tara LaRosa - "Long before Gina or Cyborg came into the picture, you'd hear about Tara just making her way through one person after another in the circuit ? especially in New Jersey, where she's got a lot of fans.? For me, she was definitely an inspiration.? We can do it, we can do it really well and with a lot of class."

On hoping to fight in the UFC one day - "Oh yeah.? Some little girls want to grow up and wear pink slippers, but for me, the thought of being in the UFC?? I hope it gets to that point for women, I hope it gets to that point in my MMA lifetime.? We can only hope for that.? Who wouldn't want to be in that arena?"

On Dana White reconsidering his stance on not allowing women in the UFC's Octagon - "I don't know any woman who wouldn't want to see women in the UFC, and I hope Dana White considers that at some point.? Because we'll bring the crowds, we'll fill the seats, and people really enjoy watching it."

TACC-developed AGAVE API makes scientific computing on the web easier, more powerful

These days, we do everything on the web. We bank, shop, flirt so why not conduct science on the web, too?

Web-based science has been an aspiration of researchers and research funding organizations for more than two decades. Currently, it is a driving force behind the National Science Foundation's (NSF) $121 million investment in cyberinfrastructure through the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), and a leading factor in the creation of the iPlant Collaborative, a $50 million effort to facilitate research in plant genetics.

For the thousands of scientists who use web portals and gateways to perform simulated experiments ranging from gene sequence alignments to complex datasets analysis, web-based science is already a reality.

Yet the field has a long way to go.

According to a 2009 study by researchers at the University of Toronto, 84 percent of scientists said developing scienti?c software is important for their own research. Scientists also said they spend, on average, 30 percent of their work time developing scienti?c software.

This means scientists are devoting a lot of their effort to writing code when they should be (and want to be) doing science.

The AGAVE Advanced Programming Interface (API) is a new tool created by staff at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) to make scientific computing on the web more functional and intuitive. In the broadest sense, it aims to make launching a computational experiment using supercomputers as easy as buying a book from Amazon.

"When services have been built to that level, research starts moving really fast," said Rion Dooley, a research associate at TACC and one of the creators of the API. "You can start leveraging manpower and focus exclusively on the science rather than the computation and technology needed to accomplish that science."

Some software development cannot be avoided. Specific tools are often required to answer specific scientific questions. However, the work researchers do can be abridged and improved with a platform that provides common functionality.

The AGAVE API does just that.

An API is the set of rules and specifications that software uses to communicate with other software. It serves as an interface between programs and facilitates their interaction. AGAVE (A Grid and Virtualization Environment) is flexible, web-friendly, and easy to integrate with. It allows researchers with little programming experience to add big time functionality to their scientific computing software.

"If we can give thousands of researchers a few percent of their time back, that's a win," Dooley said.

The AGAVE API helps both the developers and the users of scientific software. For developers, it means user-friendly tools are easy to add. Offload data management and experiment execution with a few lines of code and the power of an entire supercomputing center can be available to users of your scientific software.

For users, the AGAVE API provides science-as-a-service. This changes the paradigm from a manual, command line-driven experience to one that can be done entirely online. For many, it is the difference between walking up to a teller and banking online.

Log in, drag and drop, select and copy

We take for granted all the wonderful web-based technologies we have at our fingertips until we step into a laboratory. So many of the online tools that we rely on in our daily routines simply do not exist in a common, recognizable way inside a scientific environment.

"Millions of people each year interact with Google Maps or Dropbox or Paypal," Dooley said. "There's no learning curve with these tools; they just make sense. That's what APIs do. They provide a platform where people don't think about what's going on underneath."

What's going on underneath the AGAVE API is pretty amazing. AGAVE gives scientists and developers the ability to access and use some of the nation's most powerful supercomputers to accelerate their research.

In its current implemented state within the iPlant project, AGAVE leverages supercomputing resources at Pittsburg Supercomputing Center (PSC), San Diego Supercomputing Center (SDSC), and TACC through the XSEDE project, as well as several smaller, but equally valuable HPC and cloud resources through FutureGrid and the University of Arizona.

Access to these resources brings with it the powerful parallel software tools and libraries required to tackle big problems, supersized storage systems for archiving and sharing massive datasets, and the high speed network necessary to pull it all off.

Developers are already leveraging the AGAVE API to meet their needs. For example, the developers of BioExtract Server used AGAVE to address the large storage and intensive computing needs of bioinformatics researchers.

Created by researchers at Iowa State and the University of South Dakota (USD), BioExtract Server harnesses online informatics tools and databases to let scientists create and customize workflows for web-based analyses of genomes. Users search online sequence data, analyze the data using informatics tools, create and share custom workflows for repeated analysis, and save the resulting workflows in standardized reports.

The NSF supported the development of BioExtract Server and recently funded Dr. Carol Lushbough, a computer science professor at USD, to integrate the tool into iPlant. The tool accelerates the work of hundreds of academic and industry researchers each year, but it had drawbacks.

"BioExtract Server couldn't handle large datasets and it was really hard for our servers to execute analytic tools that are very CPU intensive," Lushbough said. "We didn't have the horsepower."

iPlant, however, can support both of those functions, and the AGAVE API allowed Lushbough to link together her tool and the iPlant resources to add these capabilities to the BioExtract tool.

"Through their API, we're able to execute iPlant tools, deploy the iPlant environment, store our data at iPlant, use the data at iPlant as input into analytic tools, and then store the output on their environment," Lushbough said. "The API gives us access to resources that we don't have. That's the biggest advantage."

The ultimate goal of AGAVE is to extend the nation's advanced computing resources to a far larger audience across the sciences.

"When a service organization exposes its resources through APIs like iPlant's Foundation API and our AGAVE platform, we can impact thousands of scientists, cutting across disciplines and demographics," Dooley said. "We can do for computational-driven scientific discovery what the printing press did for literacy."

Some of the functionalities AGAVE provides are simple, like the ability to create profiles, authorize the use of software, or move data among resources. Other tools like metadata creation, job monitoring, and auditing are more sophisticated.

The API is preparing for its second major release this summer. The new version is primarily focused on adding new types of systems, such as public and private clouds, that will give users faster turnaround times on their experiments, Dooley said.

Even now, the API is seeing a surge in use. As of July 2012, more than 3,000 researchers were using the API; 75 applications were available for use; and the API was being accessed upwards of 50,000 times per month.

To help the project gain traction, TACC staff provide a developers' console built by Apigee that allows individuals to test the interface and exercise the API without having to write any code. They also provided libraries and wrote a demo application that makes use of the entire API.

According to Karen Cranston, bioinformatics project manager at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center, the project represents an important step for community software development.

"The promise of easily executable scientific workflows has yet to be realized. The Agave platform represents an important component, allowing developers to access common services and computational resources through a language-independent programming interface," she said.

"As large data sets, such as those from next-generation sequencing, become the norm, scientists will need access to methods, storage and computational power through services that don't require them to become software engineers."

Using AGAVE, scientists hoping to do research on the web will have fewer obstacles and far greater computing power in support of their projects.

"We're not reinventing the wheel," Dooley said. "What we're trying to do is develop a service platform that takes the spotlight off of technology and puts it back onto science."

Paterno's name keeps getting erased

Penn State Univeristy Office of the Physical Plant workers remove the concrete landing area that held the famed statue of Joe Paterno, Tuesday, July 24, 2012, in State College, Pa. Penn State's powerhouse football program sustained an unprecedented blow on Monday as the university agreed to a $60 million fine, a four-year ban from postseason play and a cut in the number of football scholarships it can award _ the price it will pay for having looked the other way while former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky brought boys onto campus and molested them. The NCAA also erased 14 years of victories, wiping out 111 of coach Joe Paterno's wins and stripping him of his standing as the most successful coach in the history of big-time college football. College sports' governing body was expected to deal a series of heavy blows to the Nittany Lions football program on Monday, July 23, 2012, less than two weeks after a devastating report accused coach Joe Paterno and other top university officials of concealing child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant coach for years to avoid bad publicity. FILE - This Aug. 2, 2010 file photo shows Penn State football coach Joe Paterno speaking during the Big Ten media days in Chicago. Penn State football was all but leveled Monday by an NCAA ruling that wiped away 14 years of coach Joe Paterno's victories and imposed a mountain of fines and penalties, crippling a program whose pedophile assistant coach spent uncounted years molesting children, sometimes on university property. The Big Ten announced that Penn State would not be allowed to share in the conference's bowl revenue during the NCAA's postseason ban, an estimated loss of about $13 million. (AP Photo/M. After an eight-month inquiry, former FBI director Louis Freeh's firm produced a 267-page report that concluded that Paterno and other top Penn State officials hushed up child sex abuse allegations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky for more than a decade for fear of bad publicity, allowing Sandusky to prey on other youngsters. The revelations contained in the report have stirred a debate over whether the statue should remain. (AP Photo/Centre Daily Times, Abby Drey) MANDATORY CREDIT; MAGS OUT

Ever since it became public knowledge in November that Joe Paterno didn't do everything he could to stop former assistant Jerry Sandusky from sexually abusing boys at Penn State football facilities, organizations have been rethinking the honors given the longtime Nittany Lions coach.

This is a look at institutions that removed Paterno's name or imagery after Sandusky's arrest.

___

BIG TEN

A year before the conference got its 12th team (Penn State was No. 11), the league came out with a raft of trophies that appeared to be named by committee. For the upcoming championship game, the prize was to be the Stagg-Paterno Trophy, named for former University of Chicago coach Amos Alonso Stagg and Penn State's legend. Less than a week after Paterno was fired by the university, the Big Ten announced that it was taking Paterno's name off the trophy, which had yet to be awarded. Wisconsin beat Michigan State to become the first team to win the Stagg Championship Trophy.

___

NIKE

At Paterno's memorial service in January, Nike founder and CEO Phil Knight won a thunderous standing ovation when he said: "If there is a villain in this tragedy, it lies in that investigation and not in Joe Paterno's response." Then the Freeh Report found that Paterno helped hush up allegations of child sex abuse against Sandusky for more than a decade. That same day, Knight said he had been wrong, and Nike's president took the name off the Joe Paterno Child Development Center at Nike headquarters in Oregon.

___

NITTANYVILLE (FORMERLY PATERNOVILLE)

For years, the area of tents where Penn State students camped outside Beaver Stadium for prime seats was called Paternoville, in a nod to a similar phenomenon at Duke named Krzyzewskiville for the Blue Devils' basketball coach. The student group that manages the Penn State area changed the name to Nittanyville last week.

___

THE STATUE

As soon as Sandusky was charged and it was known that Paterno had failed to do anything more than report an incident to his superiors, questions about the fate of the statue of Paterno outside Beaver Stadium began. By the time the Freeh Report came out, it already seemed as if the statue with the words "Educator, Coach, Humanitarian" might not stay in place. Sure enough, early Sunday morning, crews erected a screen and took the statue down behind it. On Tuesday, the wall behind the statue came down, too.

___

BROWN

Brown University, the late coach's alma mater, said that it's reviewing whether to remove Paterno from the school's athletic hall of fame, too. Paterno, a member of the Ivy League school's class of 1950, was inducted into the hall in 1977. Brown already took his name off an award given annually to the school's top male freshman athlete.

___

STATE COLLEGE MURAL (HALO ONLY)

A mural titled "Inspiration" including Paterno and Sandusky and other members of the State College community was painted near campus 12 years ago. After Sandusky was charged, his likeness was painted over. After Paterno died, artist Michael Pilato added a halo, to signify his death, not his holiness. After the release of the Freeh Report, he painted over the halo. He added a large blue ribbon, instead, on Paterno's lapel symbolizing support for child abuse victims. Sandusky has been convicted and is awaiting sentencing.

___

CONNECTICUT MIDDLE SCHOOL MURAL

State College didn't have a monopoly on Paterno murals. Great Oak Middle School in Oxford, Conn., has a series of them, depicting admirable historic figures. They're going to paint over the portion that depicts Paterno, the Hartford Courant's website reported.

___

NCAA

As part of the NCAA's sanctions handed down on Monday, 112 Penn State wins were vacated. Paterno was credited with 111 of those, and reached the Division I record of 409 last Oct. 29 with a win over Illinois. Late the following week, Sandusky was charged, and Paterno was fired in the aftermath.

On Monday, all those wins were erased, along with Paterno's name atop the record books. Officially, he now has 298 victories and former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden holds the top spot in the NCAA record book with 377 major-college wins. Eddie Robinson, who led Grambling to 408 victories, regained the Division I mark.

The NCAA also took back the Gerald Ford Award it gave to Paterno in January 2011. The honor is for someone who has been a lifelong advocate of college athletics.

Short Sales vs Foreclosures: the Neighborhood | The OC Real ...

This week, we are looking at the advantages of a short sale over a foreclosure from five different perspectives: Sellers?, Neighborhoods?, Banks?, Prices and the Children. ? The KCM Crew

A foreclosure, in most cases, leaves the block with a vacant home. A short sale does not. A vacant house in a neighborhood creates several challenges:

  1. It doesn?t contribute to the tax base of the region.
  2. It can be an eyesore and bring down the image of the area.
  3. It can be a breeding ground for insects (example: mosquitoes, ticks, etc.).
  4. It can be an incubator for crime if occupied by vagrants or transients.
  5. It can create safety issues for children (example: unguarded pool).

If a short sale is the result rather than a foreclosure, it is much better for the neighborhood .

Tomorrow, we will look at the impact of a short sale compared to a foreclosure on the banks.

Travel companies save energy with wind, solar power

By Rob Lovitt, NBC News contributor

Perhaps Bob Dylan was right: maybe the answer really is blowing in the wind.

At least that?s the hope at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, which is tackling the issue of high-energy costs by installing 40-foot wind turbines on its high-rise roof. Hoping to generate 5 to 10 percent of its energy needs, the Florida resort is part of a trend that?s seeing travel companies turning to wind and solar power to cut costs and appeal to environmentally-conscious travelers.

"We started talking about it about four years ago," said Andreas Ioannou, the resort?s general manager. "At the time, we were doing the basic things ? recycling paper and plastic, using compact fluorescent bulbs ? but then we thought about wind turbines and said: 'let?s try it.'"

The plan is to begin construction on six turbines atop the resort?s 25-story tower in September. Upon completion later this year, the half-million-dollar project is expected to generate 192,000 kilowatt-hours (KWH) per year.

The project, it turns out, is part of an ongoing environmental commitment that helped the five-year-old resort earn a Florida Green Lodging designation from the state?s Department of Environmental Protection in 2008.

"Our developer had a strong interest in clean energy and we wanted to be in the forefront in terms of sustainability," Ioannou told NBC News.

They?re likely to have company as other travel providers are also turning to alternative energy. Last October, Alaska Airlines installed a 30-foot wind turbine adjacent to its terminal in Nome, Alaska, and solar panels on its roof. Together, they?re expected to produce 15,000 KWH ? about six percent of the terminal's electrical needs ? and save $5,000 per year.

Meanwhile, Hertz recently announced plans to install solar panels at its locations at Newark and John F. Kennedy airports, augmenting the installations it rolled out last year, including one at the Denver airport.

"We have a lot of locations and a lot of horizontal roofs," said Hertz spokesman Richard Broome, who expects the installations to pay for themselves in two to three years.

"It?s a dynamic and fluid situation," he told NBC News, "but it definitely pencils out."

And it is likely to do so for more companies, say observers, as they undertake the calculus of declining construction costs, the availability of government incentives and long-term trends for energy costs from traditional sources.

"We?re not at grid parity [with other sources] yet, but it?s getting close," said Marie Schnitzer, vice president of consulting services for AWS Truepower LLC, a renewable-energy consulting company. "It?s getting to be less about early adopters and becoming more achievable for a broader group of companies."

Which, in turn, will provide more options for environmentally-conscious travelers. They may not see any savings in their personal travel expenses, but they may find it easier to locate travel providers who share their concerns and commitment.

"There?s a growing trend of Americans looking for companies that are committed to sustainable practices," said Schnitzer. "They?re saying: How can I support companies that support my personal values?"

Verizon CFO Fran Shammo hinted during the Verizon Q2 2012 earnings call that the next iPhone could be coming Q4 of this year. This isn't too surprising since we've been expecting the next iPhone to launch sometime around the end of the year, but at least we have some more official confirmation of that. In other Apple news, the company has suffered some losses in the European courts. A German judge ruled that the Motorola XOOM does not infringe on the iPad's design and a UK judge has ordered Apple to publish a notice both online and in multiple British newspapers and magazines stating that Samsung's Galaxy Tab does not copy the iPad's design. This could be a wake-up call for Apple. All of this news and more is discussed in this week's episode of The Dog Pound.

Cordless Tools - Types Of Power Tools That Are Useful For ...

Gone were the days when people depended on their sheer physical strength to get manual work done. In the past, people relied on hammers, saws, grinders and wrenches to be able to do their repair or construction work. Today, these tools are still useful but one can accelerate the efficiency of their work by using what are called as "cordless power tools".

These cordless tools perform the same functions as your good old hammers and wrenches, except that they do the work on a much powerful scale. In short, they are tools on steroids. Cordless machines are convenient, because they do not need to be connected directly to an electric source in order to be used. Thus, they present many benefits to any do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiast who wants to get down to elbow grease.

The following are examples of the most commonly used cordless equipment:

1. Cordless Reciprocating Saw. This is a powerful electric saw that can be used for smoothly cutting thick materials such as pipes, ceilings, hard wood planks, and floorings. This tool has sharp blades that rapidly move up and down. The cordless reciprocating saw itself must be held with both hands because it is usually larger than jigsaws. If you are planning to do some serious home improvement work, this piece of equipment is a must have.

2. Cordless Drill. This tool is used for drilling holes on walls or driving screws to attach two objects together. Instead of spending hours on drilling through screwdrivers, the cordless electric drill can sink screws faster than you can imagine. The reason why this piece of equipment is effective is because it is powered electrically and it uses an air pump device that causes the machine to work more forcefully than usefully. This is perfect for attaching curtains, putting up doors, and repairing automotive parts.

3. Cordless Impact Wrench. This is used for major DIY and construction projects, because of its ability to tighten sockets and screws faster than you can imagine. Its air compression feature allows for high impact hammering of and tightening of sockets, such as in wheels, automotive parts and assembling loose appliances.

There are many other cordless power tools and equipment that anyone can use for everyday situations. However, it is also useful to understand that these come in many different brands, types, and prices. While you may get a good bargain for discounted tools, purchasing original, durable and branded items are proven to be the best option for long term use.

Gasweld is a unique hardware store that offers power tools online. Their wide range of cordless power tools and equipment can be used for construction, repair, automotive, and home improvement.

NKorea's Kim Jong Un gains title of marshal; new military chief introduced to army officers

PYONGYANG, North Korea - Hundreds of soldiers danced in Pyongyang's plazas after North Korea announced that leader Kim Jong Un was named marshal, a title cementing his status atop the authoritarian nation's military as he makes key changes to the 1.2 million-man force.

State media said in a special noon bulletin Wednesday that North Korea's military, government and political leadership had decided to award the top title to Kim, who already is supreme commander of the Korean People's Army. It solidifies Kim's standing seven months into his rule and follows several days of reshuffling at the highest levels of the military.

His new military vanguard ? led by a vice marshal introduced Wednesday as the nation's next army chief ? presided over a meeting of officers and defense officials attended by The Associated Press.

Hyon Yong Chol, promoted to vice marshal on Monday, was introduced as the chief of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army. He replaces Ri Yong Ho, the vice marshal whose dismissal was announced Monday as being due to illness.

It was a pointed changing of the guard. Ri served in high-ranking military and political posts under Kim's father, the late Kim Jong Il, and guided Kim Jong Un throughout his succession process. Hyon is a younger, lesser-known figure whose background remains unclear.

Inside the April 25 House of Culture, officers applauded and cheered the news of Kim Jong Un's ascension to the top military post. In the plaza outside, hundreds of soldiers and students brought to the hall to celebrate twirled, danced and sang patriotic songs, some waving the flags of the army and the nation.

Such "dancing parties" typically are organized to celebrate major events in North Korea, and the day is likely to be marked in the years ahead as a military milestone for Kim Jong Un. Each song has its own choreographed set of steps, much like Scottish folk dances or American square dancing.

"I am pleased that our cherished desire came into reality," Kim Jong Gum, a student at the Kang Pan Sok Revolutionary School dressed in a military uniform, told AP. "July 18th: This day will be remembered in our hearts as another meaningful and auspicious day."

The title of marshal ? held previously by Kim's father and grandfather, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung ? is "another brick in the wall of consolidating Kim Jong Un's power, across party, state and military institutions," said John Delury, a North Korea analyst at Yonsei University in South Korea.

"In the wake of Ri's stepping down, it takes on added significance," he said. "Titles, of course, do not ensure authority. But the regime would appear to be closing ranks around their young leader."

One by one, Kim Jong Un has collected top posts in the military and party, including first chairman of the National Defense Commission, first secretary of the ruling Workers' Party, chairman of the party's Central Military Commission and member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau. He was made supreme commander of the military in December, just days after his father's death from a heart attack.

It remains unclear how the military reshuffle will affect North Korea's tense relationship with its neighbors and the United States, which stations more than 28,000 troops in ally South Korea.

The South Korean and U.S. militaries have stepped up their monitoring of North Korea's military in the wake of Ri's dismissal, but they've seen no suspicious activities, according to Seoul's Defense Ministry.

Little is known about Hyon, the new army chief. He joined the Central Committee of the Workers' Party, a key decision-making body, in September 2010, and was on the funeral committee for Kim Jong Il ? two strong indicators of his rise in stature.

He is among four generals promoted to vice marshal since Kim Jong Un took over.

Kim Jong Il held the title marshal until he was posthumously made "generalissimo" ? the nation's top military title ? in February, shortly before what would have been his 70th birthday. He had been named marshal 20 years earlier when North Korea founder Kim Il Sung was promoted to generalissimo.

As leader, the young Kim has continued to maintain his father's policy of "songun," or military first, and has sought to inspire loyalty with visits to military units, often with Ri, the ex-army chief, at his side. However, he also has made building up the economy a priority and has promoted officials with economic expertise.
